  • Heretic! Hank Hanegraaff, Francis Chan, and Metropolitan Yohan have all been accused of being heretics. The backlash that Francis Chan received after making comments about the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist was the inspiration to have this conversation dealing with the epidemic of division within the body of Christ. The Eucharist was supposed to bring Christians together and yet it has become so divisive. What issues are essential doctrines and what should Christians divide over?
Topics discussed include: The Eucharist was supposed to bring Christians together and yet it has become so divisive-what issues are essential doctrine and what should Christians divide over? (0:20); going back to the early church to discover what is essential Christian doctrine (9:10); are we saved into the church or is being saved primarily personal? (11:15); why is there so much denominational division in Christianity? (16:30); it is not the absence of truth that damns but the despising of truth that damns (19:30); should different perspectives on the Eucharist divide the body of Christ? (23:25); the value of holy tradition (26:15); the arrogance of many Christian leaders relying on their personal interpretation as opposed to relying on the collective wisdom of the early church (35:20); deep spiritual growth begins with humility (38:35); how Hank Hanegraaff’s experiences with the local church in China changed his perspectives on many things, especially understanding deification (43:50); a lack of humility in people that are creating division within the body of Christ (48:20); searching for humility because God gives grace to the humble and resists the proud (54:35).

It's been two years since I first watched this video. Since then, I have been inspired to look into communion and the ancient church. I looked at the history, and at first, I thought the Catholic Church was the right path, but then I discovered Orthodoxy, and now I am coming home this year. After two years, I have verified and found much more true than I have seen in the Protestant church. I have nothing but love for my brothers and sisters, but the completeness I feel is so true, and I have never felt the closeness to God I have now.

This was really surreal watching. I grew up a strict calvinist. Went to college and had a short atheist stint. Then, I was drawn into the Lord's Recovery that Hank mentions. I'm now about to be chrismated and received into the Orthodox Church. Praise be to God that I have found the True Faith! Worshiping the Undivided Trinity!

@@ChristIsLord7 I left Protestantism and actually did a short stint in Catholicism before Orthodoxy. The change was stimulated by reading patristics and church history. My objective was to find the church that Jesus founded by tracing doctrines backward through church history. I left Protestantism because I discovered in my studies that the Protestants invented new doctrines that didn't exist before the 1500s. I became Catholic under the Society of St Pius X because I rejected the theological novelties of Vatican II. I was stuck there for a really long time because I couldn't figure out who left who during the Great Schism. I talked to loads of Catholics about it and their arguments weren't terrible. The issue is that when I looked at the history and, again tracing back the doctrines, I discovered that #1 the arguments dismissed much of the history and #2 the Orthodox weren't the ones who had changed their theology or practice. This is all before even meeting someone Orthodox or reading anything published through the Orthodox Church. The Orthodox didn't change and as much as I love both my Protestant and Catholic separated brethren, y'all did.
I attended my first Divine Liturgy and, while I don't believe that experience is a valid test for truth, I had a deeply moving spiritual experience. I could sense the great cloud of witnesses there with me. By sense I mean that, if you were sitting beside me, just outside my peripheral vision, I would sense you. It was just like that. I swear I could have turned my head and seen the Theotokos or the Deacon Stephen standing beside me. I basically never cry, but I wept with joy through it.
Sorry if it was a little long.

Thank you, men! What a true witness to so humbly seek unity. I was a reformed pastor, serving a church and also pursuing post graduate studies in seminary when I seriously began to deal with the early Church, since it was my focus of study. For brevity, my path lead to becoming Catholic. As part of the Western Church, I so happily love my sister Eastern Church. Pope Saint John Paul II, refers to our East and West connection as the church that must breath with two lungs, “Ut Unum Sint”, that we may be one. I have great hope that this unified life giving breath will come to fullness and endure, for Christ has built his Church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against her. I pray for you, brothers Francis and Hanegraaff, because I know the difficulties you face from those that come at you that are dear friends in the Lord. May almighty God continue to bless you men in all that he has given you to do. I agree with other comments about reaching out to Scott Hahn, also a former reformed pastor and convert to Catholicism. God used his example to help form me. I pray for continued humility and peace for the sake of Christ’s Church!

First you read Calvin then Augustine, after that the “fathers” Before long you are so inundated with the doctrines of men that you find yourself bowing to a wafer and praying to the dead who cannot hear prayer. You have made the word of God of none effect by your tradition.
Friend, God desires that you believe the gospel, not the traditions of men. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. It really is that simple.

Traditions are very important, as Jesus said at the last supper, DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME. That's TRADITION.
catholic Church does that for 2000 years even today and it will continue. That's the TRADITION I am talking which is important.
And bowing to the water and asking intercession with saints as you wrongly mentioned as dead, I will explain you if you are interested to know more. But once I explain its going to shake your foundation. So get ready to enlightened.

    • @josephdas7482

@@whatistruth2810 Ironically, your first sentence is a statement of your own doctrine, followed by another and then doctrines of other men. “Bowing to a wafer” and “praying to the dead.” Do you not know the origin of this tradition that disparages the Lord’s Supper and Great Cloud of Witnesses? Are you not aware that our earliest Christian brothers and sisters, under pain of imprisonment, and martyrdom “bowed to bread”, “prayed to the dead” and even collected relics of other faithful martyrs and saints? Do you not know the tradition in which the Holy Scriptures were transmitted, preserved, and handed down to you over the millennia? Then, what interpretative tradition or doctrine did the reformers (a.k.a. a bunch of men) hold in the 16th century, when they began to innovate, creating new Christian doctrine and removed parts of Scripture that weren’t compatible with their own doctrine? These traditions and doctrines manifested in so much division that Christians cannot even worship together, resulting in tens of thousands of denominations today. There are even those that claim to be non-denominational, which ironically have their own set of doctrines and traditions without even knowing it.

@J C A covenant is like an agreement. In this case a marriage agreement between Jesus and His bride. In order to understand what a marriage covenant looks like to God, you need to understand the character and parameters God ALWAYS remains in. This is described as KNOWING Him. Too many people like to define Jesus and God by the New Testament, but He has not changed. Jesus is the Torah, God's living WORD and instructions. The New covenant according to the prophets, will be for Judah and Israel, this is why we must be grafted in. (Jeremiah 31:31-33) The New covenant will be written on our hearts so that we won't sin against Him. If we are in covenant, we are not an adulteress bride FOLLOWING the world, we are FOLLOWING God's commandments, statutes, feasts, Sabbaths, and ordinances. The Bible NEVER says He judges people who live in different times differently, that is a lie that goes against God's very own Laws. It is a lie of Dispensationalism, which claims God's Laws are BONDAGE. This is a HUGE lie! SIN IS BONDAGE and leads to DEATH. Jesus came to purchase His bride and free her from SIN, which is breaking God's Law. His rod and staff are to guide us as He disciplines us to walk according to God's WAY!

[5] And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with THE GLORY THAT I HAD WITH YOU BEFORE THE WORLD EXISTED.
There are countless verses where Jesus claims to be divine. Jesus never said “I am God” word for word because who would believe that?
God, YHWH said that “I am who I am” in Exodus 3:14
[14] God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
In the New Testament it says:

[56] Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” [57] So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” [58] Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” [59] So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
“Jesus has a God! Jesus died! God can’t die” shows how ignorant you are of the Trinity and the Nature of Christ. Your beliefs are heresies condemned by the church for years. The church fathers defended the Trinity from you heretics. May the Triune God have mercy upon you and make you realise that you are in grave danger.

Francis, we cannot afford to put our hope, our trust, in man or denominations. We are living in the endtimes. There is great deceptions in places where people meet. 1 Corinthians 14:33 For the LORD is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. We must keep our eyes on JESUS, HIS HOLY WORD. We must keep asking for the HOLYSPIRIT to lead and guide us. We born-again believers have the HOLY SPIRIT living within us. HE is our teacher and guide. James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of GOD that giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not it shall be given him. JESUS made it so easy that a child can understand it. The LORD has things for us all to do. We that are born-again, each of us has a personal relationship with JESUS. He is the only one that can lead us and guide us. Born- again believers are the church not buildings or denominations. In Acts 7:48 the BIBLE tells us the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands. HE JESUS THE HOLYSPIRIT lives and indwells within us. We must keep seeking the LORD and asking HIM to keep us in HIS TRUTH. And HE will keep us in HIS TRUTH. We are here to do our FATHER'S WILL. Let all men fear GOD AND WORSHIP HIM. None of us can do nothing without CHRIST. We only boast in HIM. HE IS WORTHY TO BE PRAISED! HE REIGNS! And HE will come back to judge the earth! Let us be looking for HIS coming! Let us continue to seek HIS FACE, talk to HIM, sing to HIM, and give him the GLORY due unto HIS NAME and daily read HIS WORD and pray, pray, and pray. OUR SHEPHERD will take care of us. HE will never leave us nor forsake us. HALLELUJAH AND PRAISE THE LORD!

Yes, indeed. The Spirt of God is not divided, right? Why then so many Protestant denominations that none of these can unite in worshipping Christ on the Lord’s day? Does each denomination believe it’s so correct that it would force division? Interesting question for sure.

The Pharasees believed that they were Leaders who determined the quality of other people’s relationship with God. They labeled Jesus a heretic.
I think if Jesus showed up in our day, the majority of these apologist would label Him a heretic. He would still be more at home with the despised than the priest, pastor, or rabbi. The religious establishment would put Him at the top of the Most Hated list.
In the Gospel of Luke, chapter 9. One of Jesus’ disciples tells Jesus that he witnessed someone ministering in the Name of Jesus who did not physically associate with them. “Should we forbid him”? They asked. Jesus said no. If they are not against us, they are for us.

Please consider my experience with the Orthodox Church. I was born and raised Syrian Orthodox. Baptized as an infant. Trained under a former chancellor for the metropolitan of NY when I was 19. I left seeking the priesthood to pursue music. When I was 27 I was brought under conviction of how I was conducting my life and started attending the Orthodox church once again. I came to the realization that church membership and cultural identity was secondary to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. There were several times in my life when I heard the invitation to ask Jesus for salvation. I realized that I never asked Jesus to save me - in spite of my infant baptism, communion and confessions over the years, those things could not save me. I got down on my knees in my apartment and asked Jesus to forgive me of my sins and be my Saviour. That event was a turning point in my life. That simple act of "calling upon the name of the Lord" Rom 10:13 brought a change that I could never achieve through the works of devotion / ascetics. God began a work in me and the Holy Spirit gave me power to desire living a pure life - it was no longer me trying to do these things of myself. I was now compelled by God. He gave me power that I never had. When I went to Orthodox mass, the veil had been removed from my eyes - the mural of Mary and Jesus was stark - for the first time I realized that Mary was bigger than Jesus in the mural. During mass there is a call and response where we would say "Most Holy Theotokos save us" - theotokos is Greek for "Mother of God". The Holy Spirit convicted me - Mary cannot save and needed a Saviour just like any other human. There's a veneration prayer also used by the Orthodox: "It is truly meet to bless thee o theotokos who art blessed and all blameless and the mother of our God, more honorable than the cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim, who without stain and barest God the Word and are truly theotokos we magnify thee." This is Mary worship and it is blasphemous. I realized that although I was raised in that tradition and had deep cultural identity with the Syrian Orthodox church, I could not in good conscience continue following that religion. Jesus is the only Saviour. No church saves you. Salvation is of the Lord - which is what Jesus' name means. Feel free to IM me if you wish to discuss any further.

I hear the point you are making. Are you saying that the Orthodox Church is wrong and has been wrong for the last 1600yrs until the Protestant churches were born 500yrs back? I am just trying to understand how you see this. If they are wrong then does that mean that they don't have succession going back to the apostles? If they do then would that not mean that they have the faith handed down from one bishop to the next and that if error crept in then the other bishops would have brought up the issue as we see even through the Ecumenical Councils? And what church do you attend? How do you determine that it is the right one keeping in mind that all Protestant churches are based upon an individual, his interpretation, and his preferred tradition? E.g Martin Luther, John Calvin. I am not asking this to say that you are wrong and I am right. I am asking because I would really love to know how you process all this. Thanks so much.

A clear explanation about this topic from Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick: Presumably, “save” should only be used regarding God Himself. But the Scripture itself doesn’t set that limit.
The Apostle Paul is of the opinion that he can save people and that others can do so, too, that they can even save themselves:
For I speak to you Gentiles; inasmuch as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh and save some of them. (Rom. 11:13-14)
For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife? (I Cor. 7:16)
…to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. (I Cor. 9:22)
Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. (I Tim. 4:16)
So while we wouldn’t say that all these people and things “save” us in the sense that God alone can save us, we certainly can affirm with the apostles cited here that we “save” one another, that prayer “saves,” and that baptism “saves.” That is, all these things contribute to our salvation which comes solely through Christ.
Given all that, and given that we are surrounded by “so great a cloud of witnesses” (Heb. 21:1), the saints who do indeed see and hear us, and especially given that we know they are praying for us (Rev. 5:8), it’s really pretty reasonable to say that the Virgin Mother of our Lord can “save” us.

But it bothers me immensely that so many people don't have any trouble with doctrines that only came about in the 13th century, or the 10th, or the 4th, or the 2nd. Why is the 16th century the cut off? I understand that was an important date for the Reformation, but if you can trace a certain doctrine back to the time of Augustine for instance, but no further, then I have some serious problems with that as a fundamental teaching of Christianity, especially if it conflicts with previous writers and the Scripture itself.

Because the sacraments outside of the Church have no grace.
Also, because you do not care for antiquity you will fall into error and stand in arrogance because you truly believe that the scriptures can be better interpreted by yourself rather than Spirit-filled holy men. Also, unless you receive the sacrament of chrismation (which the bible describes) then you have no guarantee of having the Holy Spirit in you.
The scriptures did not just pop out of the sky, they had to be agreed upon and accepted by the icon-venerating, sacramental, liturgical Church that existed centuries ago unlike "Pastor Jim's Bible Church" which started existing around the late 1900's and early 2000's.
Seriously, you cannot claim to know the faith if you ignore outright it's history.
I was a protestant, brother. A protestant who was sick and tired of the constant innovation, irreverence and profound confusion and lack of certain truth within protestantism. Orthodoxy is a bedrock and I've found my home in it because it is the TRUE CHURCH.

You also have a major disagreement with the doctrine of the Church, brother.
You as many other protestants likely believe in the doctrine of the "invisible church" which was invented after the reformation. No one believed that people could form different sects and groups that were entirely different and unassociated from one another and yet still be in "the church" prior to the reformation. That's blatant heresy and foreign to church history.

@@Ioannikios174 First, you presume to know a lot about my beliefs without knowing me. I’ve been philosophically, theologically, exegetically, and historically trained at a masters level. I’ve studied the patriarchs, eastern and western church history and know both Greek and Hebrew. It is not arrogance to say I know how to interpret while also using historical, critical analysis of the texts. I don’t deny history or the creeds, but they are not the end all of the faith.
Secondly, just as the church fathers and all Christians, I too am Holy Spirit filled because God is not a respecter of persons. The prophets, apostles, early church fathers are no different than any other follower of Christ. The church is a universal entity that goes beyond certain distinctions. What is more arrogant and Pharisaical than saying you have the one true church? And if you do, why are you calling me “brother” if I am outside of fellowship of your sect?

  • @quikbeam03
    @quikbeam03 Před 3 lety +1

This is a good discussion. What I would add to Hank's answer on the Eucharist is that I believe reformers like Zwingli were reacting to the new doctrines being pushed by the Roman Catholic church regarding transubstantiation, adoration of the Eucharist, and withholding the cup from the laity. These all really developed out of the 13th century from individual doctors and saints like Thomas Aquinas and Francis of Assisi, yet over time they were enforced on the church under pain of death with men like John Huss being executed in 1415. The council of Constance that condemned Huss also restricted priests from giving the Eucharist in both species under pain of excommunication and threat of the civil authorities. So these guys are definitely on the right track to put away pride and look for humility, and I think the middle path of considering the real presence as a mystery is much more advisable than to try to define it as the Romans do or deny it as many protestants and evangelicals.

With regard to discerning heresies in accordance with Christ's teachings, I would think the simple answer is to recognize that we are battling against the spirits and principles that are working in people and be clear about addressing inaccurate doctrine in a way that avoids ad hominem attacks and is restorative in intent and effect.
Humility with regard to self does not negate boldness in proclaiming base truth.

I see a lot of people giving him grief for his viewpoint and I just have to ask, have you ever had questions? Have you ever had a personal revelation that was going to change your life? He is working out these ideas, these revelations by asking questions and he wants to get to the truth because he is so serious about following God truthfully as we all should be. I believe all these men are seeking truth and what it means to follow Christ the way we should be. It's just unfortunate that instead of sitting down and talking about things like these men are we decide to label them as something and call them names. You are sewing even more division into the church and indeed making others believe their ideas about church history by affirming it through hostility. The only way we will begin to restore the church into one body is to listen to each other and commit to fruitful dialog. If you cannot even be a genuine listener to someone you disagree with, then how can you ever expect others to listen to you and most importantly begin to truly come together as one church?

@ 30:49 I completely agree with Hank that teaching against confessing our sin to the Lord is false and even evil but it is evil not because of what the church fathers taught about confession. It is evil because it is to call God and His Word into question. All we have to do is to go to I John 1:8-9 "If we will confess our sin He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." I do not need to go to the church fathers, I and all of us need to go to the scripture. Humility that blinds anyone from clear biblical teaching, is not true humility. Biblical truth is what brings us to true humility before God (and not our human concepts of it). These individuals are treating humility as a sense of lowliness we must seek as opposed to a mind that is humbled and transformed by the truth of scripture alone.

Humility by definition is a lowly view of ones own importance. Are you implying that we do, or do not need to seek a level of lowliness before God and man? When Jesus asked us to wrap humility around our waist, what exactly did he mean then?
      Just an honest question.

    • @savedbygracealone8300
      @savedbygracealone8300 Před 3 lety +4

@@jordanhayes791 Hi Jordan, I don't mean to discard the general meaning that humility is a sense of lowliness. However, it's important to understand that true spiritual humility is brought upon us through the knowledge of what scripture reveals about God and our spiritual bankruptcy, which is being poor in spirit Matthew 5:3. A human attempt to be humble can only be measured by a human sense, standard, or feeling of lowliness. That is relative and limited to man's fallible concepts, and not based on the perfect word of God. We cannot make ourselves truly lowly by just trying, we need the Holy Spirit using His inspired word to be able to recognize our spiritual condition before a holy and merciful God. So true humility is an attitude we can put on but it is only the result of God's work in us to do so, for His good pleasure - Philippians 2:12-13. We can humble ourselves, but only because it is God who works in true believers, to will and obey what He works in us. We cannot work out (humility or any other work) without Him first working it in us). True humility is a response to the One who can cause it. But it will not be caused in us apart from scripture.
In the context of this CRI episode, determining what is true or not cannot be determined by trying to be humble, but by being humble before the inspired word of God to teach us exactly what He wants us to know. And His word is not subject to human "lowly" opinions as they may want to believe.
We come to a true knowledge of God, only through Christ, the Lord - as He is revealed in His word.
