  • Perth is a great family-friendly destination with lots of activities to excite and engage children!
    1. Whalewatching
We went with Rottnest Fast Ferries, and all the links for attractions are in the description below. (www.whalewatch...) The whales have their babies in the waters of Northern Australia, then between September to November they start making their way south to Antarctica, so you can see mummy and calf pairs. Incredible to hear the sound they make when they inhale, like a deep sucking. When you see wildlife in the flesh, it's so visceral and you learn things you will never learn from a documentary. Plan to go early on in your trip because if you don't see whales, they will let you go again on another cruise for free. 100% whale sighting guaranteed!
    2. Perth Royal Show
Spring is also when the Perth Royal Show is held at the end of September or early October. (perthroyalshow...) This is a huge event which is traditionally a farm show, so you can see all the farm animals and we got to pet some really cute ones. But there is a ton to do. It's like a big eccentric fair. We only scratched the surface of what was on offer. There was also stuff like camel rides and chicken races and the "globe of death" with motorcycles. You could easily spend a few days there and I wish we did!
    3. Perth's Awesome Festival
Perth's Awesome Festival (awesomearts.co..., which has loads of events for kids celebrating the arts and creative learning, is also held in spring. This year as part of the festival, the Western Australia Symphony Orchestra held a Fairytale Ball, which really was a ball! Lots of kids and musicians dressed up in costumes, there was a conducting workshop, they spotlighted the sounds made by different instruments, and the music was transporting.
    4. King's Park
King's Park (www.bgpa.wa.go.... a Wildflower Festival in spring with lots of guided walks. King's Park was great for unstructured play in the water features and epic playgrounds. The Lotterywest Federation Walkway provides great views of the city skyline.
    5. Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island (www.rottnestis...) to me is the number 1 must do in Perth! It is the only place in the world where you can see quokkas, and don't worry, you don't have to work hard to find them. They are all over the main street. They're actually a kind of wallaby. The rest of the island is gorgeous, with lighthouses, beaches, lakes... It's great to bring your bike or rent one on the island. It's so idyllic that you could consider staying there!
    6. Caversham Wildlife Park
To see other Australian wildlife, Caversham Wildlife Park is a good bet because there are so many opportunities for up close encounters! Many of Australia's most famous residents are endemic, meaning they do not live anywhere else on Earth. That was a kookaburra. We saw quolls, emus, possums, Tasmanian Devils, bettongs... At Caversham, you can pat and feed kangaroos pretty safely because the more aggressive ones are kept in a separate pen. It's also possible to hug a koala for an extra fee but you have to be at least 130cm tall. We even heard dingoes howling!
    7. Fremantle Roundhouse
We ended our trip with a bang! Fremantle Roundhouse is the only place in Australia and possibly the world where a member of the public - even a kid(!) - can fire a cannon. Just email them (www.fremantler......) to reserve your slot. It's free! The cannon is fired every day at 1pm, weather permitting. And afterwards you get a certificate saying you were an honorary gunner, which Emmanuelle was really pleased about!
