Arguably, three of the most influential artists in rock. As a fan, my favorite thing about Rush is that they are goofy and have always poked fun at themselves, but they always took their music serious and their drive to become better at their craft was never hindered by chicks, sex or drugs. Every performance, they give 100, along with their crew. There is just mad respect all around, including us fans.
Rush went where they wanted to go.... never driven by mainstream anything. Label says they want a radio friendly song, they respond woth the 20 min 38 sec masterpiece, 2112. Theyve always played what inspired them. Regardless of fans or labels. They managed to remain the closest of friends and it shows in their live performances. I'd recommend Woeking Man Live in Cleveland. Great classic rock song, their breakout song in the US and this version is from 2011 tour. Best band ever. RIP Professor. not a day goes by that I am not appreciative to be alive in a time that permitted me to see these guys live. so lucky.
You're a true rush fan! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for checking out the video. Hope to hear more insights from you on future track breakdowns :)
RusH is composed of 3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any the ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands.
Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.
Just good old down to earth Canadians who worked their butts off seen them 26 times my first concert was Hemispheres Tour first year in high school was blown away older brother had all the albums how I got hooked especially 2112 seen Moving Pictures Tour all three nights Maple Leaf Gardens now they have the audio of one of the nights I was there had tenth row center floors was watching Neil's every move still shed a tear every so often thinking of him and his family
For whatever reason even still.......... LOVE LV !!!!!! :) ♥
@@Buds1own Luv you too!! 😁
The band member not mentioned is Alex Lifeson, for me he rates as a top ten guitarist of all time. Just wanted to show a little love for Alex.
Tom Sawyer is based on a character created by Mark Twain. The poem you referred to became the song Xanadu. Otherwise I enjoyed your reaction and breakdown. Rush is a very deep rabbit hole and I look forward to more reactions.
Thank you, yes, I have a huge appreciation for Lifeson, know we talked a little about his playing but shooting from the hip and trying to keep with the flow I failed to give him the credit he deserves. We will have to do more Rush!
I agree. La Villa Strangiato would be a great song to showcase Alex.
Alex is so underrated it’s a crime. I saw Rush live in 1986. Power Windows Tour.
I agree about Alex...my favorite live performances from Rush are from super early on...when Alex would do the extended psychedelic solo in the middle of ByTor...the one that is immortalized on side three of All the World's a Stage. 💯💯
I'm 61 and saw rush from the mid 70's such a talented Trio.
One more thing. Neil Peart is the greatest drummer that ever walked this planet. Not top 5. The goatiest of all goats.
Agreed and the greatest band on the planet!
I'm sure Neil would appreciate your praise, but even Neil Peart would have told you that Buddy Rich, his idol, was the greatest drummer to ever pick up the sticks. Nobody has ever had faster hands.
@@bobmorris2443 1975 or 76 Tonite Show Johnny Carson. Buddy and Duke Ellington. Buddy Rich said " Not only did Neil Peart do my impossible drum solo, he added to it. I have never seen a more talented drummer in my life"
Neil has done tribute albums in honor of Buddy, but has performed at Buddy's Cottontail Club several times. No other drummer outside of jazz, big band and swing has ever had that honor. Neil Peart is the greatest drummer that ever walked this planet, period.
If there is a better drummer, they are Peart fans for sure
@@neilpatrickhairless yeah,but there's not.
I have been a professional drummer for many years and have played a few Rush covers along the way. Tom Sawyer was the first song I learned to play when I was 15 years old. I learned most of Neil 's drum parts note for note and I will explain brjefly why this song is such a bitch for even the best of us..First reason is that those 16ths are being hammered out with one hand on a CLOSED high-hat, which is a perfect recipe for destroying one's wrist joints, Secondly, yes the time signatures are tricky at first, but Neil has a way of leading us through
without alienating the listener.
The complexity and the changes are actually what is easiest about Neal's work. What makes his drumming so difficult is that he hits so damn hard when he cascades around that kit. HARD and precise. The solo section is where he starts skipping into double into double time 7/8, but it is only a one half measure tease at first, then as the solo builds, he really takes off into those legendary fills. It is coming out of all of this, when he goes back to hammering those 16ths again AND adding crazy variations after 'But Change is...'
This is by far the most excruciating moment in the whole song, because we just tore everthing up during the solo and now we must hammer the ride bell hard and fast leading up to the final sprint towards the finish line. This song is a whole workshop for drums, every time I play it I barely survive!! LOL...
your anaylsis is on point. For budding drummers in their teens or beyond this drum chart is a must to wrap one's head around. In HS I was in drumline so luckily we were naturally Rush fans *because* our entire training was to be able to drum hard, dynamically, and precise... all the elements of Neil's drumset drumming.
Excellent breakdown, thank you for taking the time to share!
And that's just one song shows what a beast Neil was to do three hour shows until he was 62 years old . Unthinkable for the common man lol He was truly amazing ! Just thankful I had a older brother bring home 2112 when it was first released never looked back. Seen them 27 times and I wish I could have seen them another 27 times
awesome🎉
My favorite part of the song is when the instrumental kicks in.. Changing from the 4/4 time signature to 7/4 time signature... Very creative approach to keeping the listener interested in what's going on.... Cool reaction video!!
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!
Gary
I just thought of something in examining the Professor’s last name: the first that caught my eye 👁 was ART- artist, artistic expression in both music and lyrical content. Second: PE as in physical education as in the Stamina it takes to play drums and in particular at a EXCEEDINGLY HIGH LEVEL!!! So we can deduce through his last name that we have an ARTIST in every sense of the word and Physical Education in terms of stamina and physicality to play at level that boggles the mind and soothes the Heart! Rest In Peace Professor there will never be another like you!
Sincerely,
Gary
For an even greater appreciation of them, watch the official video of Tom Sawyer.
Rush's career spanned from 1968-2015. They are considered to be the forefathers of progressive rock, along with (and also influenced by) Led Zeppelin and Yes, for a start. They are masters of time and transition, frequently working in odd time signatures like 13/8, or multiple compound time signatures.
Tom Sawyer is the most popular song off their most popular album, 1981's "Moving Pictures". It is their most-played song on the radio, and one of Neil's favorites to play.
Drummer Neil Peart (say "peert" not "pert") passed away from brain cancer in January 2020. He was "your favorite drummer's favorite drummer". He was also the principal lyricist for the group. Neil influenced generations of drummers, notably Danny Carey of Tool and Mike Portnoy (formerly) of Dream Theater.
Geddy Lee plays bass, sings lead vocals, and plays keyboards. He also has a bank of organ pedals that can play bass tones when his hands are on the keyboard, or synth tones when his hands are on the bass.
Alex Lifeson is the most under-appreciated guitarist in rock. His innovative solos range from soulful to face-melting.
Thanks so much for taking the time to share your insight, it's so great to hear from people who are as impacted by their work as I am!
Oh and hey love your handle name! Maybe will react to some music from the movie haha 😂
@@stefanlawsonable Thanks! That would be fun. And more Rush, of course...;)
Incredible track, incredible lyrics.
"No his mind is not for rent
To any God or government"
Amazing. So much sound from just three guys.
Neil Peart was a precision drumming machine. Amazing talent. He can flawlessly go to double and triple time backwards and forwards….it’s sick!!
There's a reason why it's still played on the radio, still a banger

Love this reaction….love RUSH so much! Sending ❤️and ✌️ from 🇨🇦
We're feeling it here in SoCal! Thank you!
As a lifelong fan of Rush since 2112, many has spoken about "Professor" Neil Peart. Neil started playing drums at Conservatory of Music. He took lessons there. Reason for his famous name given by the fans of Rush, "Professor" is that Neil is the main lyricist for Rush in other words, he wrote majority of their songs. Plus, Neil never stopped learning! He learned drumming styles such as Jazz. One main influence for Neil was legendary drummer, Buddy Rich even though there were mainly influences from Rock like John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. Both of you can watch some of the styles in his famous drum solo in Frankfurt, Germany. I have seen Neil live in concert when Rush was on their Time Machine tour back in 2010.
Lets give Mark Twain a bit of love for this one as well as the musicians that brought to life.
If you'd like to see Alex at his comedic best, be sure to check out his acceptance speech at the 2013 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony. If you'd like to see and hear more of how seriously underrated he was, here are a few suggestions:
Xanadu, Exit Stage Left
Limelight, Exit Stage Left
Red Barchetta, Exit Stage Left
The Spirit Of Radio, Toronto Downsview Park, 2003
2112
🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥
Have heard all these songs and all of 2112! He is a master!
That speech has me splitting a gut!
bla bla bla bla
As far as underrated only the music magazines did that all the top guitar players and fans knew better. Rolling Stone magazine did a interview with Eddy Van Halen and was asked "How does it feel to be the greatest rock n roll guitarist " Eddy replied "Go ask Alex Lifeson "
Firstly, highly interested in your book( Ima nurse /Army medic)! Saw these Kings of Nerdom back in '75(FlyByNight) touring with KIZZ, then again in Europe in '84. A thinking rocker's bastion of hope, positivity, and creativity!!! Lee, Lifeson, & Professor Peart! Nuff said! Be humble, but ever rumble! Mahalo Nui Loa❤Oh by the by...you are most definitely missing out on the FULLNESS OF THIS ROCK GOSPEL without tapping into LIVE RUSH PERFORMANCES my friends, you must see the mastery for yourself...album covers( though most kick ass for the ,70's-80's Golden Age of Rockdom) just wont suffice for these Maple Leafs!!! There is imo simply no bad RUSH contribution....merely another perspective in Progressive RockNRoll!!!❤❤❤😊
What other band can switch back and forth from 4/4 to 7/8 time to do the instrumental. Awesome!!
Great to see people who genuinely love music! Would love to hear your critique of Boston.
Oh ya Boston definitely needs a spot on the channel, choosing the track will be the hard part, so many great songs!
You really needed to show him the official video which shows them playing in the studio. The visuals of Peart on the drums, alone, is worth it. Geddy and Alex shredding should be viewed, also. Ah, well.
Yes, Limelight shows them in studio
As a 48 year lifelong fanatic I appreciate your breakdown.
My girlfriend gave me their self-titled debut upon its US release in June 1974. The INSTANT the stylus contacted vinyl I was hooked for life. Saw them in January 1977 & February 1980. '77 show I was front row center arms on stage. In the 70's ALL arena shows were general admission. It was a matter of how badly did you want the best seat/location in the house? EVERY show I saw in the 70's sans one I was front row center. I'm 61 and have seen THOUSANDS of shows in 50 years and to this day the 1977 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE show remains the best experience in my life. And BTW Neil Peart is the GREATEST drummer of all time. Do some research on him and you'll soon see what I mean.
Keep up the good work!
I can’t imagine what it was like to see the drum solo from ATWAS live, especially with that huge descending tom fill for the intro
This album was the pinnacle of Rush's production. If you close your eyes and just listen, you can hear every drum, cymbal, bass line, guitar line, keys, and the vocals as clear as day.
Love the breakdown. The best and truest thing ever said about Neil Peart is "Your favorite drummers favorite drummer is Neil Peart"
What sets Rush above and beyond all other rock bands (aside from being virtuoso') is that all other rock bands make rock songs and experiment with a Rock Opera. Rush makes OPERAS OF ROCK and experiment with a rock song.
Fantastic prog rock! Love Rush! Subbed!
Please seek forgivness from us die hard Rush dudes and dudettes
1.Neil Peart.
2.Jon Bonham
3.everyone else
The switch from 4/4 to 7/8 is so gorgeous.
Love the review. Looking forward to some more Rush!!!
More to come!
I've got 3 for you guys Limelight, Free Will, and the one that needs to be next Spirit of the radio can't go wrong with Rush
Thanks so much for all the love you guys! To show my appreciation, I've recorded a solo reaction to the LIVE version of Rush's XANADU from 1981. What a trip! I will be working to get it edited and out to all of you as my way of saying "thank you" for all the feedback. Be sure to subscribe and hit the BELL button so you can get notified when the video gets released. Keep the suggestions coming!
I've seen many rappers react to Rush and as a rock musician for over 40 years I wonder how a rap fan can go back to listening to or producing rap after hearing real music like Rush. ♥️✌️🇬🇧
He def was influenced by this, went right to his computer afterwards to try to get those synth sounds. I told him good luck haha!
If you ever see Trailer Park boys, Alex Lifeson plays himself in an episode.
Proudly Canadian 🇨🇦 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
Neil Peary is commonly called “your favourite drummers favourite drummer”.
Dudes wearin a Grateful Dead shirt!! Awesome 😁
I noticed that too!!
Looks like a recent Dead & Co. tour shirt.....✌🎶
It's prounced Pier-t. Like a pier at the shore
Thank you for breaking this one down, a little further in detail, to help the lay listener understand music theory.
Glad it was helpful!
Everyone thinks the best drum fills are the three fills at 6:27 for this video but 6:48 is a hidden Jem. A lot of people miss it.
A great introduction into Prog rock.
Even more impressive to watch them too, rather than only listen
Grateful dead shirt..... Nice one
The synth that starts the song is the Moog Taurus bass pedal synthesizer. You play it with your feet. Both Geddy and Alex use them on stage. Rush never used session musicians on stage. Geddy used 2 taurus on stage. One is at his keyboard station and one was by his mic stand away from the keyboard station
Very interesting about your session musicians comment. These guys are in their own league.
What the hell… I’ll come along for
the ride. Subbed.
Hey we appreciate that!
You gotta do Xanadu from exit stage left. And you can see them live doing what you were just talking about. Neil has a massive drum set surrounded by all sorts of percussion instruments. Alex is playing a double neck 12string on top 6string on bottom along with his array of foot pedals Geddy is playing a double neck bass on top 6string on bottom. Also playing keyboard and pedals for keyboard and singing . And it actually sounds better than the studio track.
Geddy took care of vocals, bass, and the keys. One multi talented band. That’s the way a band should be just three guys up on stage headbanging. Lol.
For decades I have thought, if anyone traveling through space, for whatever reason , would have rush blaring from start to finish of their trip. Space music ahead of its time. Thats seriously progressive.
Cool reaction guys.
Yes Geddy does play foot (Taurus) pedals at different points during live performances. Alex also plays the Taurus when bottom end is needed.
A great example is the clip below at the 2:00 minute mark of Xanadu from their official R30 footage in Frankfurt.
czcams.com/video/Vxvfukte-08/video.html
You get a brief glimpse of a sweet overhead view of Geddy playing a pretty difficult pattern with his right foot.
Enjoy and thanks for reacting to the best live rock band ever imho.
Nice! Thanks!
Great song to kick off with don't forget about the ladies of rock ABBA, Blonde, pat benatar, Heart, and many more those are some of my favorite female artist.
Geddy Plays bass and sings. In some songs like this he plays keyboards too and whilst doing that he plays Bass pedals. In Xandau he sings, plays bass, plays keyboards and plays rhythm guitar too!
I loved the reaction very much. Just a side note, Neil's last name is pronounced Peart like ear.
You should check out the Neil Peart drum solo.
To pronounce the drummer's name correctly simply put a "P" & a "T" on the front and back end of EAR i.e. (hearing aid for your ear).
Long live RUSH ❤
alex might be the best underrated gutarist ever
I saw them on this tour in Oakland.
Oh man, bet that was trip!
Saw Rush in Connecticut During the roll the bones concert and waited all concert for Spirit of radio it was the encore and man they didn’t disappoint!
You need to at least go back to the fly by night three albums and progress your way that way 2112 farewell to Kings OK that’s only fair especially since they were touring band for over 40 years think about that for a minute God needed a drummer but took our favorite way too soon rest in peace Neil As always peace love and joy to you and yours
100% pure Canadian, And you hear it in their music
*RUSH RULES!!!*

Great reaction!! This entire album is a must, to check out!!! Every song sparks a different emotion. If you don't listen to the album in order, you should check out Limelight, Camera Eye and Vital Signs....you won't be disappointed.
If you haven’t yet you guys should really do AC/DC Back in Black. Watch and hear the official live video. Brian Johnson’s first album with AC/DC.
Have him watch the video, it's a great way to be able to see them playing in the song.
"Spirit of Radio", "Limelight", "Subdivisions" "Red Barchetta" and "Freewill"would be a good start.
Wish you would have had the video, it's great to react hearing it but, watching the artist doing it is a whole different reaction, especially when you see him hitting those drums....
#JINJER !!! Thank yall !!! Pisces live studio !! Teacher Teacher !!! Judgment and Punishment !!!
Neil's last name is pronounced "peert".
Rush - Subdivisions is a MUST!!!!
Spirit of Radio will bake his noodle. It has so many different components...

How could anyone care what a rapper and Hip Hop producer have to say about Rush? Honestly, it's like taking a short order cook to review a Michelin 3-star restaurant

V/O audio recorded on a potato?
Wonder how many “producers” of rap have sampled this one?
Okay honest question and I don’t mean this in a disrespectful way but after listening yo music like this do you find it harder to enjoy the stuff on the radio now including rap?
Can't speak for my friend but I have been off the radiowaves for the better part of almost two decades and rock music will always be more impactful to me than rap music but then again I am a guitarist raised on classic rock and not a rapper, but love all of it and know they are different art forms that are not easily replicated by those who are the most skilled in their field.

Definitely have to do Pink Floyd.
