Old school dictum: DO NOT use batteries as your camcorder power source. Plug it in to external power (house hold current). This circumvents laziness on your part, and assures a constant-voltage power supply.
Edit: Good work, finally someone using FireWire and not RCA capture devices.

Unfortunately, your title "Transferring Sony Hi8 camcorder footage to computer." implies that this video will help with transferring analog Hi8 movies to a computer, but that camcorder you are using, the Sony DCR-TRV280 is a Digital8 Handycam, so it cannot play "Hi8" movies that were recorded on original analog Hi8 camcorders, only digital recordings that were captured on a Hi8 tape using Digital 8 format.

I would suggest the same setup. I think the firewire adapter has a specific chip that makes it readable.

why use a usb cable it has firewire out, not sure which camera you are using looks like a trv285e but maybe it's not, as the 285 doesnt play 8mm or Hi-8
It will play digital Hi8 tapes that were recorded with it or other Digital 8 camcorders. It will not playback analog 8mm or analog Hi8 tapes.
When I’ve tried this I couldn’t see video I would only be able to hear audio how do I fix this?

Hey Man! I just got a sony handycam and i have a bunch of cables but cant seem to get it to work in quicktime like you have in the video. I dont have any option to select a video source it just gives me an option for all my audio drivers etc. I have the star tech cable video capture as well but I havent tried that on my PC yet as i would like to have an option on my mac
hmm, i think the StarTech cable only captures audio. i would just recommend the setup i have tbh.

maybe firewire can receive the right signals? firewire and this camera were probably around at the same time.

hey man, i got a sony dcr-trv 510 and a 520, with doing step for step what you are doing with a similair set up (i only need the DV out from the cam to a apple firewire to tunderbolt adaptar) with a macbook pro I7 intel core on the mojave 10.?? trough the quickfire video recording option.
now every random allotted amount of time that passes by 5-20 ish minutes, as my camcorder keeps playing back my quickfire just stops the recording with an error message along the lines of "could not fullfill action recording stopped". did this also happen to you and if so how did u fix this?
i would proably just records in little chucks?

you will need both. thunderbolt to usb, usb a to usb c, and the black firewire cable

Hi, could you tell me what kind of tape you are using when transferring the video? There are both Hi-8 tape and digital 8 tape! I have the Hi-8 tape and your method is not working for me. Thanks so much for this video. My camcorder has a S Video Out and my A/V OUT is one small round plug-in. I'm not sure what to buy to transfer to my computer. My camera is Sony Handycam Vision Hi8 CCD-TRV308

@@isaacmijangos Thanks so much I figured out how to do it. I used that ClearClick but that wiring you mentioned did the trick plugged the yellow and white only into it as it was giving some weird noise and then the s-video wire.

Do you connect from that socket to the white (sound) and yellow (component) cables, ignoring the red (other sound) connection? I believe as long as it has the same port, it’ll work the same make sure to use QuickTime player.
@@isaacmijangos Yeah you have a Digital8 one so those and the Mini DV ones usually come with firewire but the Video 8 and Hi8 ones don't usually. You can get certain Digital 8 models which are reverse compatible with video 8 and hi8 playback, so it's a handy way to digitise and get best quality over firewire, using it as a cassette player

Make sure you aren't too close to your Wi-Fi. It can cause interference with older equipment. I had that problem.

from my experience, and all the cables I used (took several weeks), the cables I used were the ones that worked for me.
Firewire to USB cables or converters do not work. You need a firewire to firewire cable, and a firewire receptor on your laptop or desktop. I spent about $40 for a firewire PCIe express (only Texas Instrument chipset) online, plugged it into my son's PC, and it worked.

@@isaacmijangos Hi, others already pointed this out to you before it seems but it's not actually a Hi8 camcorder, but a Digital8 one which is slightly different. It does however record onto Hi8 tapes if you like but you only get say 60 mins out of a 90min hi8 tape, or 40 mins out of a 60 min hi8 tape or something like that ratio. It's in the sony manual
Thumbnail says vhs but it’s digital8, not even analog and far from vhs. If you want the VHS aesthetic, you will need at the very least an analog hi8 camera or a true vhs camcorder
