- Book of Star Mythology is the latest Touhou fangame to come out from the guys that did Riverbed Soul Saver and Mystical Power Plant.
It follows the Touhou 15 example of giving you a Pointdevice mode and a normal Legacy Mode.
Except in this Pointdevice mode when you die you just continue where you died instead of getting send back to a checkpoint so uhhh......
The game system revolves chapters like in Touhou 15. After every chapter the game calculates the amount of wish items you collected, the percentage of enemies killed along with the number of deaths.
If you pass a certain requirement with these stats you get awarded a bomb piece.
The game absolutely vomits resources at you, even more than the past games I believe, making the game really trivial to just clear.
You get way and way too many bombs in this. You can pretty much bomb everything that is even slightly dangerous and still have bombs to spare.
Scoring systems unique to this game are wish items and the magnitude system.
Wish items are the star items and these get dropped by enemies if you kill them and they also bleed stars if you pointblank them. It works the same on bosses.
Magnitude is a score multiplier with 6 levels to it. It goes 6 = x1.00, 5 = x1.60, 4 = x2:20, 3 = x2.80, 2 = x3.40, 1 = x4.00.
Every subsequent magnitude raise adds 0.05 to the multiplier. You raise magnitude by filling the bar with wish items and capturing spellcards. Filling the magnitude bar also gives you a life piece.
Dying tanks your multiplier completely and cuts it in like half.
At around 4 magnitude is when bosses start using a last word kinda final spell. Failing it doesn't make you lose anything.
I have no idea what they did with the stage 6 stage background but it's like impossible to record with Dxtory and Fraps. Not even OBS likes it.
I've recorded that stage portion with background set to simple for that part alone and tried to edit around it.

At 37:25, the result screen, カノープス級 means Canopus level, the second brightest star in the sky. Every level is a name of one star, sorted by magnitude. The less you miss, the brighter star you are rated.

damn, this running at 60fps looks gorgeous. danmakufu games are murderous on my old cpu. I guess it's about time to upgrade...
Some games work better than others. Riverbed Soul Saver and this run fairly well. Mystical Power Plant and Frantically Forbidden Fruit do not in the slightest, even if you turn off as many effects as you can.

Yeah, I really didn't like wbawc as a game (even though I love mayumi and keiki, I still sometimes just boot up stage 6 just for the vibes even if it's shit).
HSFIS I heard was more interesting but the visual clutter is too much IMO.
I think UM might have some better spells? Haven't cleared it so far but it feels samey to me, also unplayable without the tenuki card lol

Ignoring the resources, and if the game didn't give out so many resources, this would actually be one of the most difficult fan made touhou games. But then again, idk. No matter what, I'm still not good
Last spells seem to be based on wish items collected during the stage, like how IN's are based on time orbs: 777 items in stage 1-2, 1333 in stage 3-4, 1777 in stage 5, and 666 in stage 6. And just like IN's, the requirements are low enough they tend to be met before the boss even starts.
Also I'm not sure bomb parts are awarded based on stats in the chapter-- you're getting them even after failed last spells, but not after your single death. Maybe they're based on not dying, like SA's life parts.
Yes, bomb pieces is solely determined on if you die or not.

From the description it sounds like the game mode + resource mechanics are ..not good for expert players. Doesn't that suggest then that the aim would be to clear it with no bombs + doing all the magnitudes etc? Or is that impossible / too rng / not worth the effort when there are other games to play?
I would argue that some bosses in this game can't be no bombed and no clear. Not because of RNG, but because of the speed of some of the attacks or the inability to avoid them reasonably. The resources of bombs in this game make my brain bleed, mostly because the bomb in this game is fucking overpowered. Literally a phase killer, which a bomb shouldn't ever be. A bomb should be clearing bullets for a second, and maybe just finishing off a boss. This one has it last for a good 4 seconds and obliterates phases fully from start to end per phase. Terrible.
However, most of the fights are fair and interesting, if it weren't for the specific instances of bullshit and the overpowered bombs and resources, this game would be great. Some of the Danmakufu designs are really distinctive. A shame really.

At least that makes them doable for me.
LoLK resolved that nicely with a checkpoint system tho, but there the whole bomb giving system is pretty meh.

This game looks fantastic... and much more fun than th 15 imo.

+OmegaTaishu It's way too easy because they give you too much resources. The creators' should be harsher on the resources, like getting 5 or 6 pieces of lives or bombs to get them.
I mean, sure it's easy to just clear but it seems like the difficulty of each pattern in and of themselves is schizophrenic to say the least. Stage 3 boss feels easier in general to the Stage 2 boss, and certain patterns are just kinda bullshit - Nezu's fucking anti-talisman hitbox nonsense I tell you what (hilariously it has Kanako syndrome though). To be honest the whole game seems kinda unbalanced to me, though I can't say I haven't enjoyed my time with it, even if it has those silly ido hitboxes I've come to know and hate thoroughly through his new game.
