    Attack power does not show your full power yes of course but it is the first bucket multiplier.
    So you know that if you go from 6k AP to 8k then you basically increased your overal power by 33%.
    There are 4 multiplier buckets
    1. Stat => attack power (e.g strength)
    2. crit dmg
    3. vulnerable
    4. everything else all go in this bucket (physical dmg, slow, bleed dmg, while berserking, dmg to stunned etc)
    lets go in an example with 4 numbers
    6 x 4 x 4 x 4 = 384
    Now 6 => 8
    8 x 4 x 4 x 4 = 512
    (512-384) / 384 = 0.33
    They key is to spread equally your stacking dmg in all 4 buckets.
    If you have 350% crit dmg but 150% vulnerable AND you have an option of either stacking more crit lets say +50% or choose +50% vulnerable
    The +50% vulnerable will give you a lot more dmg.
    current dmg: 3 x 3.5 x 1.5 x 5 = 79 dmg
    +50% crit dmg : 3 x 4 x 1.5 x 5 = 90 (14% increase)
    + 50% vulnerable: 3 x 3.5 x 2 x 5 = 105 (32% increase)
    which is huge differnce

    For anyone that don't want to struggle with all these calculations, just prioritise below stats in order:
    1)Crit rate and Crit damage
    2)Vulnerable damage bonus
    3)Core skill crit damage bonus
    Once u get the above stats to decent numbers, u can simply go with build specific bonuses such as overpowered damage etc...
    Next will be conditional stats such as:
    Damage bonus to close/far enemies, Damage to stunned/slowed.
    Hope this helps

    I think the a way to simplify how the math looks is to show the following equations. Suppose you have 4 points to distribute between 4 buckets that already contain 1 point each. How would you do so?
    One bucket gets all 4 points : (1+4)x1x1x1 = 5
    Each bucket gets a point : 2x2x2x2 = 16
    Power of multiplicative buckets.

  • @liuete
    @liuete Před rokem +7

    Attack power is the base DMG from where all the buckets multiply, so simply ignoring it won't work. You NEED a high attack power as well. Think of the WW Barb, he needs his left hand weapon to be a high-dps as a priority, the rest since you are not using them just need good stats on it (crit dmg, vul dmg, core skill...).
    Example: If you had 100 attack power and your buckets give you 200% dmg = 300 total dmg
    if you had 200 attack power and your buckets give you 100% dmg = 400 total dmg
    So the base is as important as the bucket multipliers, you just need to figure out which stat will give you more final dmg in the end

  • @GrrumpyPants
    @GrrumpyPants Před rokem +47

    Think of attack power as the number being multiplied by your 4 buckets. Having a lower attack power means you need to fill your buckets more to compensate. Likewise, emptying your buckets means you will need a lot of attack power to compensate. Note that base stats are included, so they are not a 5th bucket. If an item reduces your damage to vulnerable targets from 100% to 75% but increases your attack power from 4000 to 6000, that is a dps increase. If you know what it is, it's not an arbitrary/useless number. You just need to understand that it isn't the most important number.

    • @timber2lease
      @timber2lease Před rokem +2

      that misses the point that attack power can increase while not being relevant to your build, so no, thats wrong. if an item reduces your damage to vulnerable targets from 100% to 75% but increases your attack power from 4000 to 6000, that says nothing. all attack power could be not utilised by your build, making only the dmg to vulnerable-decrease relevant.

    • @sinteleon
      @sinteleon Před rokem +5

      @@timber2lease Attack power is ALWAYS relevant to your build. It's the base value that all other additives and multipliers are calculated on. If you somehow have 0 attack power, no amount of crit, vulnerability, or increased damage will help as you'll be doing 0 damage (technically overpower would still help because that also adds your health and fortify into the damage calculated, which also means all those other stats would still interact with overpowered hits, but that's separate)
      It's just that it's like 20% of your build (the other 80% being all the multipliers and additives, skills, aspects, paragons, and etc)

      @@Firewynn_ if you swapped it for one with only 10 attack power you'll see that it is an important stat and not to be ignored. You're doing good work putting out videos like this one. Most people aren't gonna understand damage buckets as a concept on their first time out in any MMO-esque style game, myself included. But by putting that info out there, easily accessible so that people can find it, you offer valuable knowledge that others can then use to better their play experience. I enjoy finding videos like this one that take the time to teach players about the crunchy numbers side of things by breaking it down and making it more manageable to understand.
    While I don't play Diablo IV myself, I can still take this similar concept about damage buckets and apply it to other games that use similar stat systems and make better builds. Heck, I play FFXIV where builds are more about simply seeking out BiS, but we still care about damage buckets when it comes to savage raids and how to stack dmg buffs with fellow party members to get the most out of those buff windows. All to say, keep it up you're doing wonderful work by telling people about this game mechanic!

    Baseline before these two modifers :
    20,000 dmg + 300% Crit damage (20000 x 3)= 80,000
    +50% core skill would be :
    30,000 dmg + 300% Crit damage (30000 x 3)= 120,000
    +50% crit damage would be :
    20,000 dmg + 350% Crit damage (20000 x 3.5) = 90,000

    So when looking at a shadow corpse explosion necro, overpower does not apply and crit does not apply. Does that mean that the total damage one can do is limited by a max of 2 buckets? (Base including shadow damage and damage to monsters with damage over time + vulnerable)
    Or are 'shadow damage' and 'damage done to enemies affected by damage over time' multiplicitive?

    Those are not 'damage buckets' or 'multiplier', those are 'factors' in an elementary school level math operation called 'multiplication': en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplication. Those factors are ALL sums without further bonuses. Its not 'additive' vs. 'multiplicative'. Its a product (the result of a multiplication) whichs factors are sums, or - in case of a bonus that multiplies just one of them factors - also products. For example Grandfather only muliplies crit damage. Now if such multiplication is the last thing that happens on one factor, it is effectively a multiplication of the entire damage. That however changed with crit damage getting added to the same sum/factor as those other +dmg affixes. Since 'Punktrechnung vor Strichrechnung' the bonus of GF is now only for the crit damage part. Why less smart people call that 'nerf' it actually increased variety because now **by default** crit dmg and vulnerable dmg are not worth more than the other affixes. However there are no multiplications on 'dmg vs close' .. There is damage multiplication for attacking close enemies but not for the 'dmg to close' stat. Hence by equipping stuff like grandfather you can actively make crit damage or vulnerable damage worth more than the rest in form of just making your build. Of course its a different math than before but still thanks to gf every 1% of crit damage is now worth 2%. So the 31.5% crit damage affix on 1h weapons is on par with close dmg affix with grandfather alone. With additional crit dmg multiplications gets much higher than close dmg affix.
    Hint: basic skill affix on 1h weapon is on par with dmg to close without any multiplication but other than dmg to close HAS multiplications possible. Paingorgers any one?
    I know its 9 months old but this pointlessly overcomplicated and partly wrong way of explaining the simplest math still gets me mad. Just pick up a school book next time before repeating raxx's nonsense.....

    TL;DR:
    Let's say there are 4 different damage buckets (on top of base damage), and let's say you've got 20 points to spread amongst these 4 buckets, what would be the best to divide these 20 points for maximum damage?
    15 x 2 x 2 x 1 = 60 damage, now let's divide that evenly: 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 = 525 damage, conclusion: balance out all damage buckets for max damage (got loads of Vulnerable damage but low crit damage? stack more crit damage, maybe by lowering your vulnerable damage a little.)

    I knew attack power didn't matter when I managed to get the latest ice shards sorc build from Josh going with godly rolled gear and my attack power was actually a fair bit lower than him despite having the same level because my godly rolled gear lacked Int and replaced it with BiS stats instead, which ironically greatly diminished my raw attack power despite the build being exceedingly more consistent both in mana sustain, cooldowns and attack speed. What a weird stat..

  • @Zibi21
    @Zibi21 Před rokem

    Do the same topic but open the stats window with all the damage factor and then explain how to calculate it by looking on your numbers. Like what stats you focused on and how do they affect your damage compared to other stats. Do the same stats apply to similar numbers on different characters, like if a sorc/necro did the same numbers as you would they benefit the same of should they invest their points in different place. Like sorc nova is close combat but shards do range dmg so should sorc go for close or long range stats. Vul/CritDmg/CritChance are a must but what other stats you should place in that bucket to do big numbers. I get it that sorc has problem with int beign tied to resistance that is useless so half its points goes there...even Blizzard mentioned this.

    This is why the new Diablo is really difficult for casual players to gear for. Sure I might understand this, and be able to figure it out, but I guarantee you that a newbie will not. This is a lot of math to do to figure out what the correct equipment is to keep from gimping your character. Diablo 4 should have a simple statistic that is worked out in the backend giving players a Green/Red number as to what is better overall for their character. Make it an option if you want to.

    And this explains why most of the DoT builds are struggling so much (in comparison to the direct damage ones):
    - DoTs cannot Crit
    - DoTs cannot Overpower
    So any DoT build (Shadow DoT Necro, Burning Sorcerer, Poison Rogue (is it a thing?), maybe Bleed Barbarian) is at an inherent disadvantage, because they lose the two biggest damage multipliers available.
