    The most incredible video I've seen on the Z9. No fast-paced marketing attack on the senses, no condescending lecture about specs. Amazing scenery and photography - and of course wonderful dogs to help out. The entire video is cinematic and pleasing. I was drawn to the title, because I also don't need one - can't justify one - but really want one! If I buy a Z9 it will be because of this video.

      Yeah but you have to see the other technical on point reviews of the Z9 because you'll get something you don't need at all, it would be a waste of money. This video is great but really it has nothing to do with the capabilities of the Z9..

    • @alohamark3025

      It's going to be tough deciding what to get for Christmas and beyond. I put all my prime Nikon F-mount lenses into storage, pending a full assault on the Sony Alpha and Canon R lines. Too many new bodies coming out from all three manufacturers. This is a dizzying time for both amateur and professional photographers.

    • @siras2
      @siras2 Před 2 lety +3

      I'd agree with this - it's the most impressive review of the z9 that I've seen. I don't "need" one either, but ... umm ... maybe I'll convince myself that I do.

    • @KnightsandWeekends
      @KnightsandWeekends Před 2 lety +7

      @@johnadams3038 I agree that the technical reviews are important, and I've watched several. But I don't agree that this video has nothing to do with the capabilities of the camera. That seems to be a very narrow point of view. I think this video demonstrates that you don't have to be in the midst of dizzying action and excitement to benefit from the many updated features of this new body. Watching people with access to events and activities that I will not have access to does much less for me than this video does. In fact, it was this video that convinced me to pre-order it.

  • @JohnDrummondPhoto

    As a Canon shooter, I'm highly impressed with the Z9's capabilities in both photo and video. Nikon sports and wildlife shooters should be thrilled to death with the Z9. All you need now is more native Z mount long telephotos and zooms. I have no need for a "pro" body from anyone as my R5 and R6 more than meet my needs, but the Z9 throws down the gauntlet to Canon and Sony for sure.

  • @bsmukler
    @bsmukler Před 2 lety +79

    I watched Morten Hilmer’s video and now this. Brilliant move on Nikon’s part in both instances! No polar bears or firearms in this video, but “Pebbles and Fox eye focus” is equally as inspirational :) I’m glad you included your closing thoughts about the camera for landscape photography. The Z9 is clearly aimed at sports and wildlife photography, especially for professionals, but, weight aside, it’s interesting as an all-rounder due to the traditional Nikon pro-body build. (In that regard, it reminds me of the Leica SL line, which is essentially bulletproof.) In addition to Leica systems, I also use Fujifilm X and GFX gear, which is fine, but with frustratingly small buttons and less robust-feeling overall build. I think Nikon will win back many of those who veered off into mirrorless offerings from competitors with this very advanced, well-built mirrorless flagship.

  • @lcador9
    @lcador9 Před 2 lety +34

    Tim Martland, below, got it right, "who would have thought Nigel, that you a landscape photographer have the best examples of animal Eye AF released so far." Nikon should give you a Z9 for the marketing value you provided. Great landscapes as usual.

    I used to shoot Nikon, but switched to Sony 3 years ago. I'm happy to see Nikon is not dead and can actually compete. I hope they release some affordable models with some of the new improvements to counter A7iv and Canon R6 in terms of focus and video. I'll be back when the Z mount lenses become more affordable when the 3rd party options become available.

    • @tubularificationed
      @tubularificationed Před 2 lety

      I'm afraid that these two problems might break the Z's neck. Z lenses probably won't get cheaper (why should Nikon do that, as they seem to have decided to be "Zeiss" now). Also, any (relevant) 3rd party support might not materialize in any reasonable time. Look at Fuji, it took 10 years until Sigma still doesn't offer any of their APS-C lenses also for Fuji.
      Nikon is even more problematic than Fuji, the relationship Nikon-Sigma is hostile. Nikon once took Sigma to court. Sigma is Nikon's enemy. In the DSLR era, there were Sigma lenses whose AF stopped working after Nikon camera firmware updates. That stinks like sabotaging an enemy.
      So better don't count on the arrival 3rd party AF lenses to break the overpriced Z lens monopoly prices 😉

    The title of this video hits the nail on the head for me! When this camera came out I was like "I need this like I need a hole in my head". I have the Z7 and the older D3, D300 with pro F glass... But now after watching several videos of the Z9, especially this one, I'm seriously considering selling my older gear and getting a Z9. Either way thanks Nigel for making a incredible video that I plan on watching again!

    The Z9 looks like a phenomenal camera. The Z9 might just as well be yet another Nikon icon. I hope Nikon brings the tilting display of the Z9 to the Z7III or whatever that camera will be called. This is the single feature I'm missing in my Nikon camera's today.
    Anyway, I noticed you already had an L braked on the Z9. Is that already available?

    Really nice video, thank you! Astonishing, how quickly you have come to terms with the autofocus shooting Pebbles and Fox. I use Z7 and do not need the speed Z9, would not to carry that weight too. But the sensor shield is something absolutely perfect in the mountains in bad weather… oh my.

    I do a fair amount of dog agility shooting. The Z6II has replaced the D500 now. I get a lot more in focus eye shots than before - but missing enough that the Z9 is really on my radar. For now I've opted for the 100-400mm (my working hypothosis; my 70-300mm is a bit two slow to react; we'll see). But dang, you got some really nice puppy shots there. Well done! Classic case of the skills and the eye being there and now the tool is up to the task.

    Excited for everyone who wants this camera. For me, I say bring on the next DX body and give it that glorious tilt screen. Having to do pushups or crane my neck for vertical shots has actually discouraged me from taking them. Then again that articulating panel might be the same size as the Z50 lol.

    Nigel! 😁 Thanks a lot for an honest video.
    But The price of it is less than these two camera bodies (I have both of them) with money left for a lens... NIKON D850: $2999.95 + NIKON Z7ii: $2999.95)=$5999.98; Nikon Z9: $5499.99; Crazy Cheap!
    US dollars Leftover: $500.00👌😄
    I do agree wholeheartedly with the weight issue and chronic back issues and hiking...

    For landscape „the“ camera is the GFX100S, body about the same size as Z7, horizontal and vertical flip out screen AND 16 bit raw files. There have been rumors, Nikon will come with a 16 bit NEF option on the Z9, but they didn’t. That would have been making the Z9 the true Jack of all trades.

    I agree. I'll be sticking with my Z7ii. As a landscape and architecture photographer the need just isn't there for me. I am glad Nikon got to bring this to market though. It definitely fills the void for sports photography, and greatly improves upon video capture. They nailed this one for sure. Hopefully they can keep the momentum going.

    Taking out the shutter and putting in the sensor shield is what sets this camera apart. It's meant for people using it in the field, changing lenses if they need to. The technology no longer necessitates a shutter, so it could go. Which means it's also probably the only camera that can do 20 fps under all conditions (I guess people tend to forget this aspect when they compare the max fps to the A1 or R3). It's not necessarily meant to impress on a spec sheet (even though its specs are pretty damn good), but it's in actually using the camera that it takes the lead. At least that's my takeaway after having absorbed all the news about it for the last 48 hours or so. ;)

    I shoot dogs with a Sony A9 and the Sony 135mm 1.8GM lens and seeing it nailing focus time and time again at 1.8 is just mind blowing, and that's a fairly old sensor now compared to this new Z9! So good to see Nikon getting back in the game.
