in brief:
1. **Introduction**:
- Liam, a 17-year-old polyglot, speaks seven languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, and Russian. He's currently learning Turkish and Polish.
- He revisits his language learning journey, having previously made a similar video when he was less confident.
2. **Background**:
- Liam grew up in Leicestershire, England, surrounded by English speakers.
- His interest in languages was sparked by his sister's travels and her job on cruise ships. Many cruise ship jobs required knowledge of German, which inspired him to start learning the language.
3. **German**:
- Liam began learning German on Duolingo and quickly reached a conversational level.
- He faced challenges progressing beyond Duolingo, but his father introduced him to My Language Exchange, where he practiced with native speakers.
4. **Spanish**:
- After German, Liam decided to learn Spanish. He struggled with pronunciation but eventually reached a conversational level with the help of a Chilean friend.
5. **Other Languages**:
- Liam briefly tried Norwegian but didn't continue.
- He learned French, Portuguese, and Italian. He mentions that he learned Italian mostly by listening to music and watching videos without formal study.
- Russian was one of his favorite yet most challenging languages. He loves the language but struggles with the grammar.
6. **Future Plans**:
- Liam's ambitious goal is to learn five more languages this year: Turkish, Polish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish.
- He's open to learning languages like Chinese, Japanese, or Korean in the future but acknowledges the significant commitment they would require.
7. **Conclusion**:
- The key to language learning, according to Liam, is motivation. Setting realistic goals and tracking progress is crucial.
- He encourages viewers to stay motivated and set achievable milestones in their language learning journeys.
Overall, the video is a motivational account of Liam's journey from being monolingual to becoming a polyglot in just a few years. He emphasizes the importance of motivation, practice, and setting realistic goals in the language learning process.
Wow I love this comment

Hey Liam! I'm learning my 5th language now, and I'm 34. You're doing so good and I'm really interested in your advices and lifehacks! 🎉 Good luck and have fun! Hi from Serbia
I'm struggling for my learning second language you are inspiring me to learn More languages thank you for this video 🙏🙏
What is your second language you're learning? :)
Me too, i come from an indigenous family called the arrawaks but i cant even speak the language😭. I learned spanish instead, now i feel so bad for learning another language first instead the language of my people
Thanks for sharing your experiences about learning languages:))
Thank you for this video, It really motivates me to keep learning to one day reach fluency in french and english. Also I like to watch videos of polyglots speaking the languages they are learning so I can try to see if I understand the lenguages Im learning and Its cool to realize that Im actually being able to understand what you are saying!
Being able to understand what others are saying can be really inspiring! I'm glad this video was able to motivate you :)
Bonne chance in learning English and French!
Olá Liam! I just found your channel and I'm really impressed with your language skills. Your accent in Portuguese and Spanish is very clear and easy to understand (I'm from Brazil and I also speak Spanish). I'm glad that my mother tongue is one of your favourites hahaha
Keep up the good work!
Ahaha muito obrigado!
Good evening Liam! I’m honestly so impressed with how many languages you’ve learned and how quickly you did it! Super inspiring. As you can tell, my English is not 100%. I live in the US, but I speak almost all Tagalog at home, and I attend an English-Spanish dual immersion school. So right now I just speak those three. However I’m studying Chinese on my own, and I’d also like to learn a Slavic language someday! Though I’m not sure which one yet. Thank you for sharing 🙏 and btw your Spanish pronunciation is pretty good
Thank you! Good luck with all languages you're learning / plan to learn!
actually you are a role model , keep going pro , thanks, I'm love learning more languages ❤
thank you for this video. i enjoy watching polyglot videos. you're really good. keep it up. your Turkish is already good. bravo! Tebrikler! 🎉
Bende çok teşekkür ederim!
Extremely interesting journey of how you grew the language abilities. I'm from Newcastle so I totally get what it feels like to be surrounded by English. I started learning Spanish and then built it from there.
Well, what I can will say about this video it's really best, especially together with these different languages where you have really good progress and if honestly you really motivation to me overcome to these different hard moments, so yeah thanks for such good content.
Coooool. You inspired me... 🎉 thanks Bro
You are great!!! And also an inspiration for all of us!!! Kind regards!
Thank you!!

Interesting video. I'm also a polyglott from UK. Like you I started learning languages in my teens many years ago. My favourites are also Russian and Portuguese. Best of luck with your languages.
Sucesso , sempre
You visibly have an above-average ability for languages. Some factors that helped you and that may help other learners are motivation, exposure to comprehensible input in practical situations. Curiously, Spanish has a lot of verb conjugations but Portuguese has even a bit more, so your love for Portuguese probably has to do with the speakers of this language you get a chance to interact with.
Hearing your train of thought and how you learned these languages helps us get a glimpse of how your mind works, and thus makes it somehow easier for us, too, to learn foreign languages.
BTW I am Brazilian.
So, recently I'm thinking about learning Portuguese. I'm completely in love with MPB music and I want to understand what they're saying. As a native speaker, do you have any tips for me? Or something like this?
Hello, what is your email?
I am native to Brazil and I can teach you Portuguese in exchange for helping me with English.
I'm super patient and cheerful.

Hey Liam! I must admit you are so very nice and humble. Though I really think you should be more confident about yourself, you are doing such excellent job! Don't stop uploading YT videos, with time you'll get more comfortable and creative in your videos. Good luck and most important have fun! ❤
Hey thanks so much for this comment! It motivates me to continue improving. It's true, the more videos I do the more confident I get, and my recent videos are getting better and better each time! I do like to be humble though ahah I never want to give the impression I'm showing off, and I'd never call myself 100% fluent
Once again, thanks a lot for this kind and motivational comment! ❤️✨
Interesting journey, and I found myself more submerged in your story than I expected. I anticipated watching a few minutes and scrolling away. Instead, I found myself watching the whole thing, and even scrolling back to re-watch bits that I missed due to distractions in my environment.
Have you made a video about your method of learning? You’ve picked up these languages rapidly, and I suspect I’m not the only person interested in your study methods and how you manage time with regard to learning. If you have not made such a video, I would like to request one. I agree with your tips, and appreciate your authentic content and you speaking in all the languages 👏👏 very impressive, keep it up and best of luck with your new language goals!
Really inspirational, like you, after getting to a quasi-conversational level in German I didn't really know what to do. It's wonderful you had that support from your dad! I don't think I would've had the confidence to speak with native speakers..
Grazie mille!
Talking to native speakers was scaryyy at the start. With time, you get used to it. I think it's important to push yourself to get over that fear of speaking and just do it! Without worrying about mistakes. It becomes second nature very quickly. And it's extremely useful and motivational!
You're totally correct! I think it does help that I'm learning Italian in school, so speaking assessments are a must. Now I really enjoy speaking with strangers in Italian! Don't have many people to talk to in German however..
Fantastic!
GENIO!❤
My mother language is spanish so I didn’t know how difficult verb conjugations are until I saw people trying to learn it 😅 I guess that motivates me when I’m learning other languages because they might not be as complicated, especially romance languages. If anyone is learning spanish and needs some practice I can help :)

Your pronunciation in Spanish is good, great video👍🏼
Your spanish R is really good, I think if you practice more you will achieve a perfect R pronunciation cause the tongue twister was almost perfect!!
Chapeau - for an Englishman that is so impressive. I remember learning Spanish at UEL, there were French, Greeks, Germans, one single British and he decided to drop out after the 3rd lesson. Dein Deutsch ist perfekt!
Dankeee! ✨ I'm sure I have a disadvantage as a Brit that many sounds which exist in so many languages don't exist in English, which makes me sound I guess ridiculous in every language ahahah
But I'm proud of what I've done! And it makes me really happy that I can help and inspire people :)

Hi Liam! Your Russian is already impressive! It's absolutely easy to understand you. I know that Russian is one of the most difficult languages so congratulations!😀 And I'm ready to become your Russian interlocutor!
Hey, большое спасибо! Russian has been soooo difficult to learn, that's true. I believe I've got the hang of the grammar now. I understand all those грамматических падежах, but the pronunciation is still quite difficult for me

@@liam.languages Hi. I'm from Russia. If you want, we could study together. I learn English. From January 2024 I will be an English teacher at school. So I would like to improve my skills. I could pull you up in Russian and you could pull me up in English. If you want of course 😊
Bravo 👏
Hi, Liam. I'm really impressed - at your age I had a pretty poor grip on Latin and French, and that was it. Over the years I have added Spanish, a bit of German, Tok Pisin and I'm currently working on Italian.
Two questions:
1.) Do you find that after you learn a second or third language, it gets a bit easier for the next one? Of course, each language has its intrinsic challenges, but it seems to me that a monoglot's brain resists the very idea that other languages could exist. 🤣 Once you get over that, the brain gets used to the idea that yeah, a new language, I can cope with that ... 💡
2.) Have you ever thought of learning a classical language like Latin or Classical (or koiné) Greek? It might not seem practical, but in fact I have found Latin incredibly rewarding. Apart from enriching my English, it opens a door on several other worlds - the world of ancient Rome, yes, but also late antiquity, the medieval era and Renaissance Europe. Knowing French, Italian and especially Spanish gives you a head start, too!
Hi, thanks a lot for your comment! Tok Pisin seems really cool, I've never actually seen it written or heard it spoken but I imagine it being quite unique and complicated. How did you actually find resources to learn it?
In response to your questions, yes I have found that generally learning the second/third language becomes easier than the first, because you discover techniques the more you learn which you can then apply to future languages. But it does really depend on the language, and I think also how many you speak! Russian was my seventh language but still the hardest one for me, and now that I'm wanting to learn Turkish and Polish, it's getting hard to find time to learn them when at the same time concentrating on improving in so many others ahahaha
I think if I were to learn Latin, it would be a very long time in the future. However, I often consider learning a “lesser-spoken” language! Like you with Tok Pisin, I've considered learning a language such as maybe Seychellois Creole or even an indigenous one like Abenaki (from Canada). The only problem would be, of course, finding resources and people to practise with! Maybe one day!
@@liam.languages I lived in Papua New Guinea for 8 years, so I picked up Tok Pisin while I was there. There are only a couple of books that teach it, so I learnt a lot just speaking to people.
It is mainly English words adapted to Melanesian syntax, with a phonetic spelling that reflects certain shifts that occur because the local languages don't have certain sounds. So "f" becomes "p", for example. It has a very small vocabulary, so you often have either a lengthy description or else you borrow an English word. I couldn't find matches in the supermarket one day, so I asked the guy stacking shelves - but he spoke no English. After I made some suitable hand gestures he exclaimed, "Ah, liklik samting long statim pia!" But a lot of locals would know and use "match" because it's so much shorter.
The vocab is easy, the grammar not too bad, but the pronunciation can be difficult to get right and to understand.
@@liam.languages One interesting aspect of Tok Pisin but also all the Melanesian languages (I think - there are > 800 of them!) is a distinction between inclusive and exclusive "we". So "mipela" (plural of "mi") means we / us _excluding_ the people I am addressing, whereas "yumi" _includes_ my group _and_ the people I am talking to. Imagine you are negotiating a peace treaty after a tribal battle. (They are frequent.) It makes a big difference when you say "We have decided ...", whether you mean "my side has decided" or "we have both agreed ..."
I’ve never been able to trill r’s at all! Though one tip that one of my school choir teachers gave us is to just make it sound like a soft d. That’s always worked for me.
I love speaking Russian too. Spanish and French was the hardest for me.
Wow your language skills are impressive! I'm also 17 years old and can speak six languages, including English, German, French, and Portuguese-four of which are languages you also speak.
That's awesome! It's great that you also share the same passion for language learning ✨🌍 o teu repertório linguístico também é super impressionante!
If you want to pronounce R, you do it with a tip of the tongue, you put it on the upper part of the mouth and you blow the air quite strongly so that the wind would blow the tongue down. The pressure released would make the tongue push back up and then the increased wind pressure would push it And then it repeats and makes the R sound.
Yeessss the alveolar tap! Considering it doesn't really exist in British English, this was tough to get used to ahaha thanks for the tip!
I am French and only spoke French to the age of 10, I moved to the uk in a French school but my level didn’t improve very fast. The real improvement happened when I arrived in Hong Kong for my mom’s job, I did a year in the French school there and moved to a Canadian International school (only anglophone) since then, I am fluent in English but still have an accent. In the mean time, the French educational system teaches you 3 languages + Latin as an option, so I learned some Spanish. Now I can speak conversational Spanish but wouldn’t say I’m fluent. Since the beginning of 2023, I started learning Russian and some Norwegian. I’m on my way to speaking good Russian despite the fact that it will take a while 😂 nice video, hope you keep making this kind of content to motivate people like me.

Cool bro
Hello Liam! Could you give use some recomendations about learning romance languages? My mother is Spanish, and I learn French. I want to learn another romance one, but I don't if doing that is "going to ruin my french" because similar words and stuff. Any tips?
And for learn French and German, I recommend you Zoe.language chanel, here on CZcams, she has two videos about who learn these languages and they are really complete with ressoruces and more things.
A hug from Argentina!!
Hey! That's difficult to answer because everyone has different learning abilities. As a general rule though, it's not really a good idea to learn two languages at the same time which are similar to one another. Learning French and German or French and Russian may lead to less chance of confusion than learning French and Italian, for example. If you want to learn another Romance language, I'd possibly recommend you reach a decent level in French first, if you haven't done so already. That way, you're less likely to confuse it with the other languages and mess up your vocabulary/speaking!
However, it does, of course depend on your abilities. If you think you can do it, try it! If it doesn't work well for you, it may be a better idea to wait until your level in French is higher :)
I have a video about learning multiple languages at the same time already, it may be helpful to you!
Saludos! ✨🇦🇷
@@liam.languages Thanks for your advice, I want to do that, wait until I get more advanced and then start with another one 😘Because the other romance I want to learn it is because work, but I personally don't like it (Portuguese)
You're a good kid. I applaud your perseverance and modesty. However, if experience had taught me anything, it's that one should focus on two or three languages max until you reach C2 level ... which could take a lifetime.
A man can revive nothing except be given him from heaven! I’m impressed that you made it in just 3 years!
* sorry I meant,
*A man can receive nothing except be given him from heaven! I’m impressed that you made it in just 3 years
congrats, bro. you're right, settling the realistic goals is the crucial point. and furthermore, not the number of the languages acquired makes you a polyglot. i mean the mere quantities must not be the main matter in motivation. it is worth rather to focus on mastering the languages already in possession, i belive. well, you think another way, maybe.
I agree with you totally! That's kinda my biggest regret I guess... focusing so much on loads of languages at the same time which, yes, did bring me to conversational level but I really wish I spoke better. Like better Russian, for example, which is what I'm working on recently. Language learning isn't a race and focusing on mastering already learned languages is so much more beneficial!
Thanks
If I watched a video made by Pele telling me how he became the greatest player in the world, then it would be interesting, but I would never think that by following his journey that I could become a great player. So it is with polyglots. I'll never be one. If I manage to become fluent in my second language, then I'll die happy.
you're the best! We can speak Italian when you want!
Certo! Mi piacerebbe molto
Very inspirational video! Thanks for sharing your expirience.
I am a native (American) English speaker, and have learned Spanish to a B2 level.
My goals:
Currently learning Swedish, but still at an early beginner level.
Once Swedish gets to an A2/B1 level I want to dive back into Russian and expand upon my very basic knowledge of the language.
I also want to devote more time to Portuguese because my knowledge of Spanish has made it extremely easy to learn. The biggest challenge is the pronunciation for me.
Of course, I want to get my Spanish up to a C1/nearly native level as well.
After that I have my eyes set on Arabic, German, and probably Italian or French, but I will not have to make up my mind on that for a year or two likely.
Those are really great and ambitious goals! Me encanta que tengas estas aspiraciones futuras. Lycka till ✨🇸🇪
Hola Liam.

I just bought one of those Polish phrasebooks and dictionaries from Lonely Planet and I'm just reading through it, hoping to eventually get somewhere with it
Polski jest trudny, ale let's not give up! Życzę tobie (i mnie) powodzenia w nauce języka polskiego ✨🤝🇵🇱
I think he is amazingly correct that motivation helps a lot, but he may be missing some key points due to his age that may get in the way harder than most people expect. So I would like to expose my experiences as a full-time worker and also as an ADHD neurodivergent (late diagnostic) who learned of the inner passion for languages rather late, if you don't mind.
Even though I have an enormous motivation to learn languages, common and uncommon ones, I have a hard time learning them because a full-time job consumes a huge amount of energy (even more with ADHD without medications), and after that and before having true free time, having to take care of the daily house chores simply kills my available dedication time and energy.
ADHD is a neurodevelopment divergence (not a disease, as common people think it is), that makes the individual brain unable to regulate the focus in a neurotypical environment, i.e. the world we live in currently (and recent studies show that all neurodiverse people work like neurotypical individuals in an environment adapted to how their brain diverges from the neurotypical mind). For ADHD individuals, that makes us either unable to focus on one thing for long periods (varying on how intense it is at that moment, we call it hyperfocus) or focus for too long on a specific subject (what we call hyperfocus), those can happen in different points of time, it is not static for each individual. So, in short, unable to absorb most information or absorb N times more information than normal, no middle ground and we have very little to no control over what we will hypo/hyper focus and how long it will remain.
This can show up in many ways, such as being unable to focus on one language, being unable to focus on one lesson, studying for 10 hours straight, etc.
As I mentioned, it can be controlled in the right environment. Still, you can imagine that building a custom environment for your particular neurodivergence gets costly very fast and also some other inputs cannot be controlled. I cannot control planes that pass above my house, or cars passing in front of my house, or neighbors making noises... at least not without ending up in jail, an even more chaotic environment for my brain LOL
Other things can be done to help regulate focus, but they can't make it behave just like neurotypical focus without the environment working together. So, most of the time, in this world, at this time, neurodivergents are at a disadvantage when compared to neurotypicals.
Setting a realistic goal becomes very hard as well in my particular case. I have a late diagnosis and lived 26 years of my life setting goals that are realistic for most neurotypicals but very unrealistic for me (and most ADHD people), that was how I was taught on that matter. I managed to achieve such goals at the cost of my mental health (on other parts of my life) and I just started the process to learn what is a realistic goal for me.
I'm sure that there are people like me that already passed this phase and are way better at managing and circumventing their neurodivergence and now can live and learn better and faster and more comfortably. I hope to get there eventually!
Even with difficulties, I won't stop to keep on learning!
Anyway, I just wanted to share my thoughts. I hope you have a great life, find your dream job, and be able to learn as many languages as you want and produce more content for us. Continue on your path!
Nice to meet you fellow polyglot! I also speak seven and am working on an eighth. If you want to try Welsh, I can help you :)
Wow it's great to meet someone else who knows just as many languages! Sure! Welsh is a very unique and beautiful language which could actually be quite fun and maybe useful to learn the basics, especially considering that Wales is so close to where I live
I can talking with you on Russian language, and I want to improve my English. We can help for each other 😁
And I really adore the learning languages.
Good job! Pick one of The Scandinavian languages, for instance Swedish
I'd love to start learning a Scandinavian language now, but I feel I'd just get too overwhelmed adding another language so soon!
May I suggest learning Greek? I think it would make a good addition to the languages you speak. It's still indoeuropean like the rest of the languages you speak so far, but it's a branch on its own. It is a beautiful language with a rich vocabulary and a lot of expressive freedom. I believe that if you start learning Greek many words in English that originate from Greek will start making more sense. Plus the Greek alphabet is a bit prettier than the Latin one.
The Mozart of Languages!
I'm from Germany, and CZcams german is very very good.

Love from Bangladesh brother🇧🇩❤️
I’m a native Russian speaker and I can say that you speak it really good! And your pronunciation is amazing! Go on :)
Nice knowledge of languages, you do it really fast, but why do you want to expand number of languages instead of learn just few in a Advanced level? How do you keep be fluency? I think it so much time to spend... I´ve started learning Spanish when I knew English in B 2 level and now I lose almost ability to speak with people and forgot how to actually write something in English. So, I´ve started to learning English and Spanish at a language school in the same time and can say it´s pretty hard to speak in only one. Sometimes, I have to write some essay in English, but I only remember words in Spanish, you know, really basic words like "friend". Maybe, you have some tips 😁 So, if you need Russian practice, let me know, I´m native Russian speaker, we can do language exchange English-Russian
Would you kile to explain about how to learn, way to start, key to listen and pronunatikn, how to remember words, phrases,...
Hi ! I'm a french 16 years old :)
If you're looking for someone to practice your french with, i would be glad to help !
Yea ik, i'm litteraly a stranger on the internet...
Your video is great, i really appreciate to discover how other people manage to learn languages !
Salut !
personally i think it's better to perfect one language and after use it for learning the other ( obviously i speak about language on the same family )For exemple if you speak english, you have to speak french with an C1-C2 and now the sophisticated word too because there is a lot of word that it consider rich in one language but commonly use in the other. Learn all romance language in a intermediate level is a bad idea and you will mix all the language because there are very very similar, espacially with the word use. ( Sorry for my bad english, i'm still learning )
I think B2 level it's enough.. I don't know how people do it to not mix between roman
Seems youre inclined to german and portuguese. Im polish, but id like to learn portuguese someday :) Beside, nice plans about scandinavian languages. :P
To bardzo fajnie! Portuguese is really a beautiful language, and definitely one of my favourites!
Boa sorte ✨🇵🇹🇧🇷
