Fantastic review. This is a game that may be flawed but I love every part of it anyways from how nostalgic it is. Heck, it might even be the main game I think of when I think about Rayman. I personally like how it combined the darker, magical atmosphere of Rayman 2 with the more goofy comedic side of Rayman 1.

"Combat Fatigues! That's exactly what we need, you're right!"
"RAYMAN NOOOOOOOOOOO! It belongs to the Hoodlums... it might be DaNgErOuS?!"
A line that lives rent free in my head. Guess this evening turned into a Rayman review marathon, and I'm not complaining.
The only noticeable difference I've seen with Rayman 3 HD is that he combo counter slides up behind the main score like it does in the tutorial, giving you a better idea when it will run out.

Rayman 3 is just stupidly fun. I think I spent more time on it than Rayman 2 and every single time it left me with a big dumb smile, when I wouldn't burst out laughing. BUT I think Rayman 2 still is the superior game.
On a side note, you HAVE to play Beyond Good and Evil someday. Trust me, it's good, really good.

In Rayman 2’s development, they were originally going to give him limbs, before realizing how important not having them was to the character. This might explain why he didn’t use them in that game.

After all these years I think the turret sections aren't that bad. The final boss already had 3 phases where you play as Rayman normally and adding a turret section at the end is like throwing in a stressful final lap. Tension building as Reflux grows more and more desprate to see you fail. At the end he keeps charging at you as the music hits a crescendo of intensity. When you finally defeat him you get the reward to see Andre whimper in fear and turning him back into a lum. I think it was a good way to finish off the game.

I have this love/hate relationship with Rayman 3. I adore the combat and platforming, but I hate how there isn't any sort of variation with the gameplay (no swimming, no sliding, no racing, no shell riding, no plum riding), or as many distinct set-pieces like in Rayman 2.
Rayman 3 also feels a little too combat heavy. Which I don't mind the combat, but most of the levels feel more like large arenas or hallways instead of obstacle courses like in Rayman 2.
Again, I want to love this game, but Rayman 2 feels like it did it better at the cost of worse combat.

When I think of John Leguizamo, I think of his work as Sid the Sloth from the Ice Age series of films, and more recently, Bruno from Disney's Encanto. Still, almost as odd a casting choice as Elijah Wood as Spyro, but not quite.
I need to give the Rayman trilogy a shot one of these days. No good reason why I haven't, but these videos have me excited to try them... whenever I get to them.

Rayman in Rayman 2 had to use magic because the robots could only be damaged by it, as oppose to the hoodlums who can just be punched to death, i.e, Rayman’s element.
Oh and the combat fatigues are enchanted so he could still punch and rid of the enemy’s magical shields and what not.

  • @Z_E_B_O

3:10 The most important difference making the original a better version than the HD remaster is that they removed the intro with that badass music. Also, the loading screens look so much more creepy in the original. The only other difference I noticed is that the gongs in the desert of the knaaren are more orange in the original.
6:30 It's also interesting that the german version (I used to play growing up) has Globox speak similarily to Patrick from Spongebob. It was quite a shock when you play the german version with Globox having a kinda dumb low voice, then you play the english version and he's really high pitched lol.
12:48 also the best musical track of the game (which is saying something cause the entire soundtrack is fantastic) (seriously look it up on youtube, theres so much ambience that makes it interesting)
29:00 I don't really have a problem with the final boss tbh, yeah the part where Reflux flies towards you and you have to hit his tiny shield is a bit annoying, but it's so far at the end of the game that you just want to beat this guy and it's really rewarding to finally turn Andre into a red lum again lol.
I never played Rayman 2 when I was younger, and my first console was the first XBOX, so this is my favourite Rayman game. I still play through it regularily.

When I saw that you also did videos about Rayman 1 and 3 I INSTANTLY had to watch this one, even though that means I almost binged 3 hours of your channel
Either way I love seeing reviews about 3 as it is my favourite out of the franchise. Hearing someone with a different opinion is really interesting, especially because there were so many parts I had to agree on with you
On a side note, if you ever happen to make a video about whole rabbit game or even the situation that could become a pretty long and difficult topic. There are so many reasons why 4 was scrapped, drama within the development team as well as drama with nintendo etc. that it's both interesting and sad at the same time. The whole "See you in Rayman 4" my siblings and I still quote to this day as well was meant seriously, but 10 factors happened at the same time and we just never got it. People often refer to Origins and Legends but...that's not what we mean :(

The scoring system is there because the game isnt mario world map style or.. open ended (free roaming) as rayman 2. Its super linear. So the score system essentially is a speedrunning incentiviser because the faster you fight and collect everything, the higher the bonus score. So repeat playthroughs or returning to collect missing items has more value.

Rayman 2 you play for the 90's animated fantasy movie atmosphere and music. Rayman 3 you play for the solid gameplay, unique soundtrack and cool visuals. Rayman 3 is pretty much an experimental mixtape glued together with a solid platformer game that occasionally remembers that it can be atmospheric. Kinda like Klonoa 1 and 2, though those have much stronger atmosphere. Rayman 2 most of the time made the platforming obstacles feel like a proper part of its dream-logic environments, while in Rayman 3 most of the platforming feels somewhat disconnected from the environments. The endgame especially ends up boiling down to floating platforms inside big rooms. I do think Rayman 3 is the better game, but Rayman 2's atmosphere is definitely a big selling point.
Also what the hell is up with the water effect in Rayman 3 and why is the lava just a recoloured water effect? On that note, if you ever see a moving sky effect in Rayman 2, it too is a reuse of a water effect, that one being the river effect. Once you see it, you cannot unsee it. Also Rayman 3 is definitely not the only PS2 game that just reused the water effect and painted it as red while calling it as "lava". Looking at you Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 2. And don't get me started on the "mud" in the Crash N Sane Trilogy...

I've been waiting years for this
Fav game and probably the best if we exclude Legends, which i am because Legends is damn near or rather PERFECT but it's 2D and my based ass likes 3D more
So Rayman 3 is like Rayman 2 but better and with the charm of the 1st game, no brainer why i consider it the best
Edit: Damn i finally get these 2 flaws that are being mentioned about this game thanks to you, i didn't care about that flying with Murphy segment but it's pretty BS if you have to do it again, same with that snowboard bit, that annoyed me. I wish they were given more time and deapth, same with that waterfall thing, cool looking set pieces i guess but they should've had more...something, deapth, uses, anything really. Same with that shoe now that i think about it, being small is the coolest thing, to see a level in a new perspective but when you compare it to that shell in Rayman 2 then sheesh, i guess this is the only thing Rayman 3 does worse. I didn't even think that much of the final boss ever, only that the first 2 phases were cool and what you mentioned here about a hypothetical final boss, man that sounds awesome, shit i wish i could play that actually. Imagine if this game got altered like the previous games did, they'd keep everything that made this game good, but improve those lackluster bits, keep that bit where the last thing you do is turn Andre back into a red lum though, that was awesome. The points system i never understood the hatred for though, just ignore it if you don't care about it, sure an option to turn it invisible would be nice but i didn't care about it when i was a kid, so whatever. Gives you reason to come back, do better, compare highscores, unlock stuff, overall it's a postivie...Now. Where tf. Is my Rayman 4 Murphy. Michel Ancel even teased it some time ago, but where tf is it. Stuff like these makes me want to see Ubisoft go bankrupt, (along with Activision, EA and Bethesda) here's the image that was posted teasing Rayman 4 btw for those that need a reminder, it's in the end of Calcom's also excellent Rayman 3 video: czcams.com/video/qi3O_JPGPpU/video.html ...i just saw the date that vid was posted...4 years ago...god damnit i'm so depressed, it should've been only up from here...it should've been. I'm ashamed to admit i liked Raving Rabbits btw, ONLY because i played it with my cousins, like no lifed it even, co-op all the time, every time they'd come around. Why they gotta do Rayman like that, him Banjo and Conker i have in very high regards, i'm thankful that Crash is still going but...i don't see my fav Crash games being topped any time soon...if ever (2, CTR99, Twinsanity and more recently....MOM, you read that right, Mind. Over. Mutant. I liked Titans more but not anymore lol)

    Great review once again.
For me, 3 lost a lot of the charm and whimsy of the second instalment… some characters disappeared, some changed for the worse, like Globox… The change in soundtrack too lost a lot of the atmosphere of 2… I don’t know, it seemed to me that the game was trying to be more modern with an “edgier” attitude. It lost me due to that.
I preferred the magical and enchanted atmosphere of the second game.
However, I do admit it is still a great game and fun all around with great production values and gameplay. I just wish they had kept the same gravitas, characters and soundtrack of Rayman 2 and just added all the new gameplay mechanics. It would have been a more organic and cohesive sequel.

Just discovered this channel. Overall I’d say this is a pretty good review. My only complaint is that I find your complaint about the final boss a bit contradictory. You praised the final boss of Rayman 2 despite the fact that it is done using. A gameplay style that was only just introduced in the previous level. But you criticize Rayman 3 for doing the same thing. Other than that I thought you were pretty fair and did a good job covering the details of the game.

    • @Petronious
      @Petronious  Před 2 lety +1

      Fair comment really!
If I could go back and better phrase things I perhaps would say something like:
For me it felt like it was handled better in Rayman . That gameplay style at the end of Rayman 2 is, while different, is still ultimately about avoiding obstacles in a 3d space. It's not the core platforming but some of the challenge for it is there, albeit in a different way.
It gives you that fairly open area at the start of the flying shell bit to get used to how it feels, and to move around without being hit etc.
Wherein Rayman 3 it's a turret and bomb throwing bit where you just move the stick around a lot and press X, which sticks out a little more to me.
I agree they're both doing the same thing with the random gameplay at the end but I'd say one ends up feeling the more natural choice of the two.
Thanks for the comment! This is a point I could perhaps mention if I play another game that does this sort of thing. 😅

This game made me realise that I don't love 3D platformers. I like demon turf, psychonauts and super mario galaxy. But simple ones really bore me. I found that if the charavter doesn't have a complex moveset and interesting looking levels, I just get really bored. Rayman 3 had the benefit of annoying me as well from the dialogue and "comedy"

I really didn't enjoy Rayman 3 back in the day and I still don't like it.
The levels feel dull to get through, the voice acting was very annoying at times and the scoring system I just couldn't get with it. I skipped R3 and went to origins n Legends later on which are way better games.
