  • Karazhan is a raid introduced in the Burning Crusade, and in it we climb the magic tower which once was the home of the guardian Medivh. There is a lot of smoke and mirrors within this raid, and in this video we explore how it really looks!

    Something I never noticed in all my years raiding Karazhan:
    3:56 The background of the Netherspace area uses an enlarged texture used for stone walls.

    What an interesting way to make this raid. This must've been a challenge for the dev team.

  • @xSwarzey

    I honestly have a new found respect for their art team when I see how this stuff is made. So many different, vastly different environments, skyboxes etc all meshed together to flow seamlessly. It really takes some brilliance to come up with the designs to work like this.

    • @lodgin
      @lodgin Před 8 lety +1

      It is rather clever, but it's lazy cleverness. Could you imagine how much of that environment could be cleaned up, or even simply removed if there was a team whose goal it was to make things efficient?

    Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember that small village being present pre-Cataclysm. It's been a long time for me, but I remember there being a handful of quests involving the Ogres in the surrounding area in Deadwind Pass. There was also the key quest for Kharazan that had players clearing out the underside of the village to gather items needed to get your key for Kharazan and/or the key for one of the other raids in Burning Crusade. The area was haunted by several undead mobs, mostly of the 'ghost' variety that loitered in the area.
    In regards specifically to the map file itself, I genuinely believe that the map section pertaining to Duskwood may actually be a blueprint of the original Duskwood as they were developing it during the Alpha.
    I say this because while dungeons traditionally borrowed surrounding map assets, what makes that version so distinct from the retail version of Duskwood was the terrain itself. The terrain is unusually jagged for the map editors they would eventually start using. Either it was during an earlier build of their map editor where they had yet to implement terrain smoothing, or they simply hadn't smoothed the terrain yet.
    There's also the lack of texture on the ground, which again shows an underdeveloped zone. Originally the idea behind Duskwood was that the area was going to be unique. Duskwood, lore-wise, was shrouded in darkness due to the Scythe of Elune, I don't remember all the little details, but it's partly why the area is so dark, dead, perpetually dark, and features Worgen.
    In the original concept Duskwood was intended to be so dark that players would be required to carry light sources with them, ie. in the form of a torch or a lantern, just to be able to see in front of them. The idea would eventually be scrapped as the devs found the area to be too bothersome to deal with for players, so they scrapped the idea. However, pieces of this concept are left in-tact, even post Cataclysm in the form of all the villagers and townsfolk and town guards carrying torches with them.
    Additionally, on that same token, there are plenty of in-game items that remained that served the purpose of providing players with light to navigate Duskwood, several orbs, in-game torches, wands, and even lanterns that players can acquire that have a noticeable dynamic light source attached to them.
    Stuff like this is why I find these videos so entertaining; it tells a behind-the-scenes view of how the devs go through the motion of how they create content. It also gives us glimpses into what could have been in terms of dungeon and raid design.

    Something huge in this video that u missed that I saw when I was using ewt in the raid is that on 1 part of the mountain right outside the raid u can find none other than nightbane sleeping. He is not targetable and just sleeps and sometimes gets up to yawn. So in other words the original nightbane was never removed from wow. They just hid him away behind a few rocks on a part of the mountain very close to the raid.

      Glad you like the vids :) However, this is a non-narrated series for a few different reasons. When I started narrating videos last year, I still wanted to keep one series in my old format as there are many who still prefers this over me narrating. I also love to try to create an experience with just music and personally don't think this series would benefit from me talking. And finally, it is my fallback series for when I'm too sick to narrate (which tend to happen right after chemotherapy). Luckily though, both the evolution series and exploration series are narrated and there will be at least one of them coming most weeks alongside the how it really looks :)

      It does now. Abandoned Kirin Tor camp, Crypt may be opening, and the Catacombs for DK artifact weapons. A fair few of the mobs in the area have been upped to lvl 100 :D They've really overhauled it for Legion imo. Not necessarily visibly, but if you wanna go exploring..
