The Holy Grail was the friendship we found along the way.
Mr. Yates helped me become a petrol head and fascinated me with his excellent writing and did indeed inspire me as a teenager and going forward. So much so, that I see his legacy in almost every automobile journalist nowadays. I didn't know he was in the actual film as most articles in magazines had either no picture or a very small one. Nice to see your respect for a man that has created so many careers. Cheers!

I was an enthusiastic subscriber to Car & Driver back in the '70s, and Brock Yates' column would always be the first thing I'd read. That was truly the golden age of automotive journalism.
I guess I figured the "holy grail" would be the Brock Yates' Moon Trash van, Dan Gurney's Ferrari Daytona, or Dave Yarborough's Jaguar XJ-S, not a jacket.

Bidding on this was fun but it went way past my comfort zone. Glad it stayed in the “family” with the most fitting caretaker.

I used to collect Car and Driver magazines and read all the articles from Brock Yates and Csaba Csere and other Automotive Drivers. I have been a Car enthusiast since the 70's because of this men. I feel Ed is doing the same work for current generations!!!

Several years ago I was taking pictures at the annual Winter Park, FL Concours and this old man pulled up in a white, Ferrari Dino. He walked over to me asking about the unusual camera ( GoPro ) I was using and we got to talking about his car he brought for display. He told me he was from Gainesville and I chuckled and said " you didn't drive that thing all the way here for the show did ya " and he said " no, I brought it on a trailer". I said that would've been a long, uncomfortable ride in that car. He then said " well I once drove it all the way across the US to win the 1975 Cannonball. Then he reached out to shake my hand and said Hi, I'm Jack May. He was very nice and we talked about his car and the Cannonball. It was an amazing experience that bordered on the surreal.
Another big question is how come the soundtrack of the original movie is basically impossible to find and download? Lol. Great buy Ed!

I always wished I could have met Brock. I heard so much about and him and grew up only a half hour from where he made his home. That close proximity meant that I did come across guys that had met him and had stories.. But alas, our paths were never meant to cross directly. I did meet a few who had.. so I have to take solace in that.. I might have had a better chance if my father kept driving into the later 70’s.. but he gave it up to be a father and dad..
Erwin George Baker a.k.a. cannonball Baker set a speed record 1921 in 12 days across the US in 1933 he got it down to 53 hours and 30 minutes just adding a little history
I have to say the true grail of the Cannonball was the abolishment of the 55 MPH speed limit.
Which I think was won by Brock himself. When he took down a Washington bureaucrat on Ted Copple. By stating it's real easy to tell people how to drive, when you go to work in the back of limousine everyday. That's a video I want to see again, better than any video this channel has ever shown.
People forget the true point of the Cannonball was a protest against the 55 MPH, telling "The Man" where to go. Most of you reading this have no idea what that world was like. The shame of it all, today's world is far worse.
I was very happy when the 55 limit was abolished too! However it raises the question of "what is an appropriate limit?" I drive a 2013 odyssey and 55mph instead of 70, adds over 11mpg to my highway driving. There's an actual purpose for the choice of 55, gas savings. For what purpose is the number 70 appropriate? As opposed to 80,90, or 190? If it's so people spend less time driving then 190 seems better, right? If it's for safety then 35 would be better. If it's supposed to be a compromise then why has it remained static despite the incredible advancements in car safety and speed abilities?
The fact is any speed limit is just a way to create revenue for local police. However 55 has a really good explanation. It saves a LOT of gas! I recommend you try it some time, the results will shock you.
Personally, I think there shouldn't be a speed limit at all. But if there HAS to be a limit, it shouldn't be an arbitrary decision, there should be valid reasons for why the number is chosen.

Here in socal another cannonball car has popped up recently, it’s a stretch Porsche limo and it’s for sale. It was driven by the founder of Benihana, it’s really rough but it for sure is the same car.
This is cool. One of the more interesting evenings of my life was hanging out with Oscar Kovaleski and Toly Arutunoff; I knew them both separately before, but this was just me, them, and a keg in an SCCA hospitality suite. 😊

I would consider getting in touch with Round 2/Auto World AW to produce die-cast 1/64, 1/18 scale replicas. They also sell HO scale slot cars and tracks. Im picturing a four lane Cannonball race set! Could you imagine a Blue 1/18 scale 71 Ferarri Daytona on your shelf or any of your favorite Cannonball cars on your shelf or in your showcase? I'd get Brock's Challenger. I'd try to buy every model offered!

They made a movie called Cannonball Run I'm thinking 80s maybe..After the movie a bunch of guys and gal's gets together and does a real life Cannonball Run cause if I'm not mistaken, Richard Rawlings was the huge winner that nobody beat, at least that's what he's been saying cause I'm guessing that he still has the same car maybe. Not sure but that's what I've been understanding lol..That would be fun and cool to do cause I watched the movie and I'm pretty sure that everybody watched it and was hilarious and interesting to see lol..Now my question is did a bunch of people get together and actually do a Cannonball Run cause I've heard Richard talk about quite a bit..
