  • Hello and welcome back ... Today, we look at a doll that was a childhood favourite of mine; - Magic Curl Barbie from 1981, (sold in 1982.) And not only do we look at the Caucasian version NRFB, but we will also see the black or AA version out of her box! This doll was very much an early 80's gal, so we also take a look at the trends of that time that she beautifully reflected, as well as some fond childhood memories. Thanks for watching and please like, comment, share and subscribe to my channel. Also please visit my Instagram and Tik Tok pages @fashiondolldreamer

    Youre so lucky you were able to have Barbies as a kid. As a guy, my father NEVER let me even touch a Barbie doll. I wish I had those memories, but I'm glad to collect them now as an adult.

      Sorry to hear your Father didn't let you have any Barbie dolls (but it's great that you made up for it now!! 😊) I think my parents were a little 'confused' with me TBH as I also loved my so-called 'boy's toys' like my racing car set, my Matchbox and Hot wheels cars and my toy trains! LOL But they were cool with it all. I had a friend whose father also disapproved of dolls for him, but his mother bought him a 'Growing Up Skipper' (remember her?) His father would always confiscate it, but strangely enough, would just hide her somewhere and never actually throw her away! (Probably because he was scared of what his wife would do if she found out he had! LOL) So every time I would visit him, we would play the game of 'finding Skipper.' She would be hidden in the oddest of places.... one day, she was even hiding behind the milk in the fridge! LOL

      Funny that collectors know it as the 'Steffie' face as didn't Malibu P.J. have that face around the same time or even just before Steffie arrived? (1971... Steffie was available in 1972.)

      @@fashiondolldreamer the first PJ dolls had Midge's face, i think. MY first time seeing this face was on Sun Lovin' Malibu PJ on the back of the Barbie box. Everytime we went to K-Mart I looked for her to no avail. She was either too popular, or just never got to my store.

    LOL at those ads for Magic Curl Barbie and the bubble bath playset. "Ken likes it curly again! Better make Ken a sandwich!" Ken was really controlling back then, apparently. 😄
    Love Magic Curl Barbie, I only had the Caucasion version back in the day, and I only ever straightened her hair once, if I recall. I just liked the curls better, and the hair felt super sticky when it was straightened. The Magic Mist solution was kind of like hair spray or something, and it just kept the hair straight by making it super sticky and clumpy. I have since gotten more examples of the doll, and one of them I heat styled to have the 'straightened' look. I also have an AA Steffie version, and of course she is kept in her original condition. I will always pick up this doll if I see her secondhand for a good price, she redresses beautifully.
    The yellowing on Magic Curl Barbie's ring is probably just the aging of the plastic, in much the same way that Golden Dream Barbie's clear SuperStar shoes yellow over time. Originally these were clear plastic, if memory serves. Unless I miss my guess, the dyed yellow SuperStar jewelry was only available in the "Sunny Yellow Shine For Night Time" fashion from the 1978 SuperStar fashions collection, and of course with fuchsia or hyacinth rhinestones with the Fashion Photo Barbie and Christie dolls, respectively.

      Yeah, I had the same experience with my childhood Magic Curl when it came to the hair, so I don't think I will be straightening the hair of either doll.. You could be right about the ring, as it's so subtle that I didn't even notice it at first. If that's the case then it actually matches her dress more with aging!

      @fashiondolldreamer  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yes, the blue one was the earlier 1976 version, and the pink 1981 version used the exact same molds from that one, so it was essentially just an update. (I think only the 1981 version had the hand-held shower head, though?) I had the pink one as a kid, but I would love either one these days. is the Rubberband in her hair original? i have dolls from the 90s that had deteriorated rubber band in their hair

    • @fashiondolldreamer
      @fashiondolldreamer  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Not sure, but it looks it, from what I have seen! It could have broken in there under the hair ribbon which is keeping it together, perhaps? I also have some rubber bands that came with Golden Dream that are still intact, so it's strange because yes, they usually deteriorate.

    These dolls always seem like the granola eating, Gunne Sax by Jessica McClintock wearing, precursors to Barbie and the Rockers. LOL Because the hair on the first wave of BatR is virtually the same style on Barbie, Dee Dee and Diva, just more of it. Really curly and pulled back like that. Just VERY different makeup and clothing styles. Pretty dolls and those dresses take me back to such a sweet vintage inspired time. The Steffie face mold on the AA dolls is always so beautiful.
    Does anyone else get a bit creeped out when the "Dad" in the Barbie bubble bath commercial suggests that maybe he needs a Barbie bubble bath? Just a bit cringey. 🤔
