Nice project. Just one issue I found is that you switched the grounded conductor in the compressor cord (blue wire) when in reality you should always switch the hot conductor (brown). Cheers!

Cool project, I'm building myself a fourth air compressor using a water heater tank and a 5hp A/C compressor. I'm using the thermostat from the water heater to prevent overheating situations (strapped to the side of the compressor) and geofencing to detect when I'm home via my phone gps. My arduino is used to measure power usage, and with the help of a flow meter on the output and a linear pressure transducer, to detect for any leaks or anything else that would require an emergency shutdown.
Edit for anyone trying to make a compressor from scrap like this, when reusing pressure vessels, especially if you're welding them like me, you should always test them beforehand. I use a pressure washer and gauge to pressurize the tank to about 100-150psi above the expected pressure of the tank because if the tank fails under water pressure it'll simply start to leak because there's not a lot of stored potential energy. Air compresses and stores a lot of potential kinetic energy so if the failure happens with compresses air you'll have a pretty bad explosion ok your hands which is why I'd rather learn about the failure with the pressure washer and a tank full of water rather than a tank full of air blasting ila home through my garage door as it shoots through like a rocket. Hope that makes sense, it's similar to hydrostatic testing used to certify "professionally" made pressure vessels. Don't attempt if you don't know what you're doing.

Cool idea! You could use a set of flush cutters on all of those zip ties, the ends that remains are pretty likely to cut/scratch and cause foul language ;-)

CanonGuy Good catch. Too true about tiewraps. I met up with one when it was 35 below. Felt like a scratch. Nothing like a trip to ER with a tiewrap induced gusher on your wrist. You'd think I was wearing a Team Atempted Suicide jersey. My wife had to come and vouch for me.
An easy way to finish tiewraps is to grab the protruding male end with a pair of linesman pliers, or equivalent, flush and tight where it leaves the female latch end, give it a twist or two and it'll shear off clean and smooth.
      Take care.

Great job going to use some of this in my diy compressor. Cheers

    Hi, great video 😄.
I'm a beginner and I would like to know if you still have the link to order the compressor?
    Thank you in advance 😉.

great video thanks! I want to do something similar maybe we can collaborate and sell it ?
I want to control my compressor cut on cut off tank drain valve digital read out with unloader control.
    any interest let me know.
