- Pianist Emmet Cohen (@EmmetCohen) performed his first in-person KNKX studio session since 2019, inaugurating the new Studio X and performing for the first live session audience since before the pandemic.
Cohen made the most of the forced isolation, he told us about his streaming video series Live at Emmet's Place and how it grew from a trio on cell phone video to a more professional set-up and a number of high-profile special guests.
For this visit to KNKX, Cohen was joined by bassist Phillip Norris and longtime collaborator Kyle Poole at the drums. The three have an uncanny sense of each other's improvisation and fired through a complex arrangement of "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top" from the musical Oklahoma and Cohen's original song "Spillin' the Tea" before settling into a gorgeous reading of the classic big band song "Li'l Darlin'" for their finale.
In a conversation with KNKX jazz host Abe Beeson, Emmet Cohen talked about emerging from pandemic closures in great demand and getting back to touring. Cohen also spoke about his connection with fans both young and old and his own musical efforts to bridge the jazz tradition with a modern attitude.
The audience for this first Studio X session were surely connected to Cohen's trio, and we're excited to share this performance with all of you - as excited as we are for a bright future of exclusive performances in our new Seattle home.

Emmet's Place should adopt this from-above-piano angle, it's really cool to see Emmet's hands like this.
Sorry for not stating the obvious, but can I say, I've always marveled at KNKX's Yamaha upright? I've heard several pianists play it and it always sounds great. No doubt a gem of a piano and probably also a brilliant sound engineer for mic'ing it perfectly.
We've had several artists praise the Yamaha U3 and our sound guy ain't bad either! Thanks for watching and listening!
I have a U3 myself at home and it sounds great, but how KNKX manage to get this sound out of it amazes me every time
This particular “ Spillin the Tea” was mindblowing.. whole session incredible.. I could listen to this trio forever 😊❤️🎹
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent camera work. Very rare.
Wow - band is always BURNING and the piano sounds KILLING
Thankyou, very nice!
Beautiful tone from the piano and even more wonderful work from EC 3. Amazing!
thanks so much for sharing this! i’ve been following your channel for years now and ever so often I can use your videos in my music lessons. best wishes from Germany
Thanks for watching and subscribe for more! 😃
Três feras na música!...🎶🎵👏👏👏. 🇧🇷
Jazz24 studio sessions are hidden gems. Such great recording quality. For example the Christian McBride sessions from several years ago sound even better than the live at the village vanguard album the same trio put out, in my opinion. Shame these don't get more views.
Thank you for the kind comment @flare2000x! Spread the word to others!
Nice brushwork at the end of Surrey.
Tasty!! Erika and I enjoyed it very much!
We sold several Yamaha u3 s in Nashville for use in recording studios if you mike them correctly they do a great job especially if the pianist is as good as Emmett!
KAWAI was a special piano at KNKX.
What is that mic for the piano recording ?
The clarity of all instruments is better in this performance by Emmettt at KNKX 2019 - czcams.com/users/hashtagemmetcohen - (in my opinion, compare and comment I would be grateful - it's rare to find people interested in the good music with quality like Emmet and also decent quality in the recording and later posting on
youtube where most don't care how it got on youtube)
There is the KAWAI. I thought they got rid of it. Wait this is a Yamaha. Old one was a Kawai, I think. Typical Yamaha; but, it is nice.
