      wow! that was a really niffy idea! and the part I like is very inexpensive because organizational trays and drawers can get pretty costly! FYI I found that foamboard a Dollar Store! which I was looking in a popular crafting store and those were almost $4 a sheet! Thanks!

    I've repurposed some boxes and now have condensed all of my Dominion expansions into three boxes. Everything is sorted alphabetically which make set up and clean up a breeze.
    I'm looking forward to making my own inserts for several tabletop games. Thank for the inspiration!

    I've been working on foam core inserts for all of my tabletop games, Smallworld has been the hardest challenge as I do not own all of the expansions at the moment. But this video might help inspire what I want to build later on for it. I have made foam core inserts for Elder Sign and Betrayal at House on the Hill. Thanks a bunch, love the vids!

    I haven't made any inserts yet but I've seriously considered it for Carcassonne. I have the German tin edition with River II and a LOT of the expansions. Doesn't all fit nicely in the tin anymore. Nice storage solution for Small World, I'll have to make this!

    • @allhailskippy

    I think a table top traveling bag would be a great craft to do in the future. One that can hold two board games with smaller pockets for smaller games like Zombie Dice, Resistance, and pockets for MTG decks and dice. Great craft and vlog Paul.

    I made an insert for King of Tokyo out of cardboard which I then wrapped in black duck tape. It worked pretty well but it is starting to get flimsy over time. I am going to have to redesign it with foam board. Hopefully I can get King of New York to fit in there when it comes out.

    Very cool! I had never thought about making my own inserts. I need to try something similar for Agricola - right now I'm just using a crafting/beading/jewelry box to hold all the pieces, but it doesn't go in the box with the game, which can be a pain. And now I want to play Small World.

    This looks pretty good for a DIY build, if a little janky. Not a fan of how you have the tray balanced right on the race tiles at 3:59. I'd be worried about warping during storage, but I get that it's a balance between that and ease of access to those tiles and that increasing the width of the edges can find someone their happy medium. I feel that Days of Wonder did a pretty good job of providing a sorting solution for the bits in Smallworld and the Underground game set. I admit that Be Not Afraid is far from ideal for storing the expansions, but I got it for the extra races and it does what it says it's going to do, storage-wise. At least I didn't have to buy another Plano box for Smallworld, unlike some other games I could mention - I'm looking at you, Fantasy Flight.

    • @allhailskippy
      @allhailskippy Před 10 lety

      Given how many race tiles are supporting the top tray, and the weight of the tiles up top, I find it pretty unlikely that they'll ever warp. But having only put it into my box just now.. I won't know for certain until much much later whether or not I'm wrong :)

    I have made inserts for Robinson Crusoe, Trajam, and a weird custom insert for pathfinder card game ot be used during game play.

  • @EclecticCamel
    @EclecticCamel Před 9 lety

    I've just started making my own inserts (made a real Frankenstein solution for 7 Wonders as my first venture that I already know I will redo down the line after I finish a few other game inserts), and Small World was an obvious venture. It's easily in my top 3 board games, but the expansions have beaten the dead horse so badly that it's no longer a horse; it's just a pile of dog food and glue. Too many, but I can't seem to stop buying them...
    I'm not going to copy your solution exactly. Not leaving rooms for the boards is a deal breaker for me as I'd then have to find another box to store those in, and knowing me, I'd never have the correct board on hand. I'm also going to use a Plano instead of creating a token tray, mostly because I want to keep the base game and expansions separate. Plus, I always intended on keeping Underground in it's original box; all I am doing with that box is creating an insert that leaves room for Realms underneath. I never felt Underground and OG Small World blended well unless you were doing a big mega map variant with Tunnels and / or Realms. Not a criticism, just a personal preference.
    However, this did really change my mind on a few things and gave me some inspiration to adjust my previous ideas. My previous ideas had been very symmetrical, as in everything started with 2 equal sized trays that I'd try to divy everything to, whereas your solution is a bit asymmetrical and frankly, makes a lot of sense. Plus I was seriously overdoing it with the trays; the way you did your dividers is simple but effective. I also just bought a Rabbet cutter.
    Thanks so much for making these videos. Helps a ton.

  • @thatterigirl
    @thatterigirl Před 10 lety +4

    Does hacking at foam trays to make them fit oddly shaped models count as "making your own game inserts?"
    Because if so, then yes. Though certainly not as precisely or as calmly as you put your inserts together in this video.
    I AM totally going to use this method to make some Zombiecide model trays though. After I paint the models, that is.

      I don't have any yet. It's possible, but not super likely.

    • @Nucleius
      @Nucleius Před 10 lety

      I use a Plano box (3700 I think) to hold all my tokens except for gold, and I use a small 4 compartment Plano box to hold the gold. Both fit really well in the original box. The 3700 holds the first three race expansions. I have to keep the actual race and modifier boards in baggies though.
      amzn.com/B003W0RPNA And then there's this, which is supposed to hold damn near everything you can buy for Small World: both games, Realms, all race expansions.

      Nucleius I saw this when I was researching my vlog. Definitely looks like it would hold all the stuff, but it doesn't make for a very good craft though :)
      That, and the only other thing I don't really like about it, is that you lose your original box, and I tend to like keeping my stuff as original as possible.

    • @Nucleius
      @Nucleius Před 10 lety

      I agree about the box issue. If I have to find a solution to the stock insert, I try to keep the original box. So far, Small World is the only game I can't fit EVERYTHING in the box. I imagine Arkham Horror would have the same problem too.

      As for finding people to play with, you should look to see if there are any gaming groups in your area. I know of a couple shops in Toronto and Ottawa where you can basically pay an entry fee, stay and play, and find people who are looking for random players to play with.
      If not, you should check out your local comic shops (if you have any). They often organize game nights too.

    • @allhailskippy
      @allhailskippy Před 10 lety

      I can definitely see there being a big age gap for TableTop RPGers. But that definitely doesn't mean there aren't people your age who are interested. Also, I could smell the sarcasm from your brackets.. anybody who's got an interest in TableTop RPGs definitely doesn't qualify as a fake gamer. Hell, anyone who has any kind of interest in games isn't a fake gamer in my mind. The only people who fall under that category are people who don't actually play any games.. but say they do :)
      I highly suggest you check out roll20.net They do web based virtual tabletop gaming, so you can have the best of both worlds.
