So the big theory is that Metroman chose to pursue music since he couldn’t just get good at it like everything else. Basically, he has to work for it. So even more props to the guy.

I think that’s a very dangerous and slippery slope to place your logistics on. It’s true that there are many “nice guys” and that they cause harm to others in one way or another whether they mean to or not, but I don’t believe that’s grounds for being “suspicious of every guy.” Now, I know you might be wondering what exactly is wrong with this line of reasoning, as it seems pretty logical, but let’s re-contextualize it with another demographic other than men: (for the purposes of this demonstration, I’ll make a fictional demographic of people called x-people). Let’s say that in a society, x-people have been recorded to committing crimes at a higher rate than average, therefore the city’s law enforcement focuses their suspicions on x-people. Now, at its core it seems fine, but if you replace x-people with people-of-color, you suddenly get the origins for police brutality on people-of-color. Keep in mind that I’m not accusing you of being a racist, a bigot, or anything of the sort, I just wanted to point out a flaw in logistics that may lead to prejudices elsewhere.
      Have a good day

@@alabaster9149 Your comparison fails, because one is using caution, the other is using aggression. Being wary of a group of people that has personally hurt you and/or has been historically known to be more violent towards people like you is different from being an aggressor. A more apt comparison would be how poc see police knowing that just being near them increases their likelihood of being murdered by several hundred percent. It is entirely fair, and frankly smart, to be wary of the people most likely to murder you. Even if you were determined to stick with the police point of view, black people don't commit more crimes, they get arrested and charged more by terrorists to ensure they get less basic human rights. The police are still the aggressors. Reality just doesn't back your bullshit.

    • @Dotterelly
      @Dotterelly Před 2 lety +140

@@alabaster9149 that's a reasonable line of reasoning, except for the fact that you're not taking into account the power dynamics of the situation. In a women vs men scenario, men are in the position of power, therefore it's women who are having to protect themselves. When a guy could literally attack you because you're not doing what he wants, you have to be cautious. The way to avoid the situation you described is to be aware of your privilege in any given situation.
And to be honest, if you respond as above to any situation where a person in a less privileged group is describing their experience of the power dynamic, you're not helping progress the discussion and risk suppressing the voice of the people you should be listening to.

Hal is basically Homelander from The Boys. Sure Homelander's not that "nice guy", but when you look into it more, both receiving superpowers due to a scientific chemical, feeling a big sense of entitlement for love and attention they both believe they deserve, just because they're powerful enough to get away with anything, only to become evil out of petty reasons.
In fact, the quote "All you're gifts, your powers, and you squander them for your own personal gain?!", best describes both of them.

Nature vs Nurture is a big theme too. Megamind only settled into the “evil” persona because that’s how he was always treated, but his nature was always good. Titan believed he was a “nice guy” when in reality his nature was bad which is why he started acting so poorly after getting powers.

The origin story is a riff on the Superman origin story and also a social commentary that your circumstances determine what you become and how the world sees you.
    - Megamind can take over Metro City that easily due to the cops acting out of learned helplessness. They're so used to Metro Man doing everything for them that in the face of a crisis they become utterly helpless. You can see this at the opening where two cops practice wildly irresponsible gun behaviour and shoot into the air, as well as in that scene where a cop has a gun trained on him and he's so utterly afraid of Megamind that Megamind can easily effectively disarm him.
    - The name Hal Stewart is a combination of Hal Jordan and John Stewart both prominent Green Lanterns. Hal is the original Green Lantern in the DCU. John Stewart was the Green Lantern used for the JLA and JLU cartoons. He's also African-American.
    - Hal is the Nice Guy trope before the Nice Guy trope was coined.
    - The relationship between Megamind and Metro Man is more líke the relationship between a Face and a Heel than anything directly antagonistic.

People didn't like it because they said Megamind was copying Despicable Me. They're both about a "villain's" transition into a hero and are parodies, but even despite those couple of similarities, they're too different for me to ever think they're "exactly alike," as some Despicable Me fans have said. Not only that, but Megamind came out only about four months after Despicable Me, and while I'm not an animator, I can almost guarantee you it takes much longer than that to make a movie that looks as good as either of them. It was just a coincidence that both studios had similar ideas at the same time that they wanted to try out.
TL;DR: Megamind was hated on because Despicable Me fans thought it was copying DM.
P.S. This is all gathered from my own personal experiences/research, so if there are any DM fans out there who didn't favor Megamind and want to give me logical reasoning behind that opinion, please, enlighten me so I can understand your side better.

A theory on why Megamind was just kept in prison since infancy: his own safety. If the prison gave him up, the government wold be the first to snatch up the alien life form that couldn't yet advocate for itself and disappear it into some underground lab forever. The warden and any other prison official who watched over him from the beginning probably realized that and did the best thing they could in the situation. As long as Megamind was under the prison's jurisdiction, the government couldn't touch him.

love this film. one of the best modern interpretations of cyrano de bergerac ever
    warning for cyrano spoilers
the way megamind is just so happy at the end. his entire life he was hated and his luck was constantly in the gutter. he fully deserved his happy ending.
I'm normally a little antsy when cyrano interpretations end happily; the whole story of cyrano de bergerac was intended to be a tragedy. cyrano dies at the end. the man he impersonates dies (in most versions). roxanne doesn't find out how much he loves her and vice versa until it's too late. but megamind? megamind is maybe the only one that does an alternate ending right. it would hurt too much if he failed, especially for a movie that kids would be watching - though i hardly think you could call it strictly a kids' movie - and it's obvious it isn't supposed to be an exact interpretation of cyrano de bergerac. you're hoping throughout the whole movie that megamind can get what he wants, what he deserves, which is to finally be treated with respect - and when he gets that, it just feels SO good. like, hell yeah! he got the girl! he beat the bad guy! he did everything we knew he could. and I LOVE this film for that.
I recommend watching some interpretations of cyrano de bergerac. it may be a little different to what you're used to (cyrano isn't actually an alien - he has an incredibly long nose!) but it's worth seeing and DEFINITELY worth thinking about. it took me years to realise that roxanne was roxane, megamind was cyrano de bergerac, the librarian was christian de neuvilette, metroman was valvert... but once you see it, it's hard to unsee!
sorry for the sudden rambling, I'm just a nerd for this kind of thing haha. thanks to whoever read all of this :')

He'd message all the girls who worked where I am, when he's own girlfriend was asleep, including me, knowing that I was in the bath, asking what bubble bath I was using. He messaged another colleague, fully aware that she was dating. He just didn't care. I even agreed to go out with him once, but in my defence, I was drunk when I agreed.
