I’ve got a 1993 DV52 HG. Also a 1986 D25 in burst. To my ear the mahogany always seem crisper across the board, while the rosewood seems deeper and darker. I love both and could never choose which is “ best”. That 52 is loud and clear as a bell, rich and booming, just like mine. I use D’Addario phosphor/bronze med on the 52 and the same , but lights on the 25. The sustain rings forever and they both play sweet. I love the sound of your D40 and have been considering adding one for quite a while now. I’d love to find a vintage one in nice shape to round out my stable.
I have several Guild acoustics, and what I especially like about them is the balance of the bass & treble, and the 12 inch fretboard radius - which I find much more comfortable than the typical flatter (16") radius you get with most guitars - including Martins.
I've never played a Yamaha acoustic, and I've owned and played countless, that I thought sounded as good as a Guild or Martin. I play and maintain a d Guild D52-E and it meets or exceeds all of my expectations...as beat up, lots of repairs and patches it has accumulated.

I have a Guild DV 52 that I bought in 1998 or 1999 with the sunburst finish. That guitar has such a beautiful tone.
Very nice. Great playing too btw!
I got my Guild D40 back in 1978 . Payed 300 dollars for it.
All the You Tube audio parts are too quiet these days. When the playing samples are played, it is way too loud.
You'd need a stack of 10 Gibson's to get the projection that one of these has, they're cannons, they're really good, I like them both too 👍
Thanks for the response.
