What is funny that back in the 60's we all wanted to build a 301 which is the 283 bored out to a 4 inch bore. I was working in an automotive machince shop at that time. The 30-30 cam was available at the time and everyone used TRW forged pistons which is what is in the factor 302. Basically people were building what Chevy finally pieced together but advancements in all aspects of engine parts improved by the time of the Z/28, referring to valve spring and pushrod guide plates, intake manifold, carburetor, windage tray. The Melling high volume oil pump was available also. Thanks for posting this.

I had one in 1974 . In the trunk was the cross ram intake , air cleaner , and one carb. That setup today is half what the car is worth.

I am really excited about this build series. I have always been a fan of the 302. I get irritated when people think that the DZ302 was the only one built. I can't believe you guys were able to find 2 MO blocks much less with the correct dates. I have been collecting parts to build a 302 myself. I don't own a Z28 but I do own a '68 RS that will get a 302 eventually. I'm just using a 327 block, 283 crank and the heavy 283 truck rods. The first part I bought were the 11:1 TRW pistons.

Hi Alan, Still working on my 296. >080 over 283 with a steel crank, H beam rods, E Street heads, 79 cam. I am having a bit of a problem getting the passenger bank to oil. Plenty of oil flow in lifter bore 8 so not sure what is up. The block is a thick casting '64 for my '64 El Camino. I won't turn it like the 302 but should be pretty powerful. I am planning on another 296, this time with a "61 block and steel crank. Probably going to go with a. set of power pack heads with larger valves to look stock. Still planning and gathering parts. Still enjoying the videos.

Hello Allen, I finally figured out the oiling problem. The motor was partially disassembled when I bought it. I finally pulled the oil galley plug and installed the distributor and could see the sealing flange on the distributor wasn't going down far enough. I pulled the oil pan, pump and intermediate rod. I called Melling to see if I had the correct intermediate shaft. The shaft I had was for a big block. I purchased a new shaft and I think all will work. I have the clean up work done and new gasket set came yesterday so we will see. I will let you know.@@goldsgarage8236

The 1969 was made for a year and a half. In 1968 there were some factory sold racing parts which included cowl induction through the firewall. There was a first design racing camshaft, which called for different valve springs, but those racing valve springs were made of defective steel. There was the 2-4 barrel cross ram intake and there was an "improved torque" camshaft, which later became the camshaft for the 350 LT-1 engine. The big difference from the 327 was the Z-28 intake manifold and large carb. The windage tray was a different design from the Corvette 327 windage tray, as was the oil pan. The 1967 Z-28 had single rear leaf springs with a traction bar. The 1968 Z-28 got multi-leaf springs in the rear.

I didn't realize the early 302 engines still had press in rocker studs. The 69, it must have had screw in studs and guideplates. Seems to me the rocker arms were "O" in terms of symbols. I doubt you'll see peak power much over 6500 with untouched heads. I would find it hard to put original TRW pistons and original pink rods in a block that rare. I would try and convince the customer to use a set of aftermarket I beam rods and a lighter forged piston. UEM Icon IC802 looks to be a suitable replacement number provided you're willing to substitute.

My Dad had a 68 Z/28 that he bought brand new. He put in the GM off-road cam and headers. 4.88 gears. Drag raced it all summer and ultimately dropped a valve and cracked the block. He sold it blown up. He told us many stories about it when we were kids, so I have always had a soft spot for 68 Z’s.

Ianbuilds7712, no arguement from me on that, however in the 1960's before the General introduced the Z/28 302 guys would bore out a 283 block 0.125" to 4" and used 327 pistons. At the time they called the engine 301Ci. Older guys still swear by the 301 designation.

Hard to believe that Chevy cast a block with enough thickness to over bore .125. A 1970’s and later block can get iffy at just .060. Shows just how stout they used to cast the early engines before they became worried about saving weight in every place. They should have kept on casting the blocks thick. A few extra pounds wouldn’t have made a difference in because they made the rest of the car heavy anyways. The extra material cast into the engine block could have saved a lot of engines from blowing up.

GM made about a 100 million SBC after 1974. That diagram is not accurate for the majority of SBC cranks GM produced. Casting numbers should be used. In no way saying you have the wrong crank. I'm sure being knowledgeable you do. But for the people watching and just learning its not a good resource.
