What a nice stumble-upon THIS is......!! First time I heard the song/saw this video was via DirecTV on a channel Worldlink TV. The music videos they broadcast were phenomenal...... a scorchin' salsa band in Czech Republic, a chic singer in and of Uzbekistan, so many others. That launched a bit of an addiction to Putumayo CD's. I had an interesting Putumayo moment in 1996........ A chic I'd sat behind in Science class in 1972 I'd seen maybe 3 times over the years...... forever enamored with her....... then, out of the blue, I hire her as my divorce attorney in '96. I knew she was quite the musician...... she replaced my band's singer as well as handled my divorce. She invites me to a party on a farm where she'd be performing with a band..... primarily to hear her sing, like an audition. We'd gotten some food and went to a table where her best friend from New Jersey sat. This is in southern Maryland....... I mention the music I love more than any other, published by this incredible record label Putumayo. The chic across the table from me says "I work at Putumayo". No way....... we're a 5-hour drive from New York City. Putumayo at the time was a pretty esoteric entity, and I meet this awesome chic that works there 3-4 states away :) I've learned tons of wonderful music from their CD's....... I've long thought they (y'all) should throw a major world music festival....... my primary motivation in that idea is to enlighten those of African heritage in America; they deserve so much more than a statue of Alex Haley/Kunta Kinte at the far end of a municipal parking lot. What the victims of the transatlantic slave atrocity brought with them---perhaps the ONLY thing other than their faith that couldn't be taken from them---was the very foundation of Western hemisphere's music that literally imposes upon those within earshot the urge to move some body part....... the black community in America is oblivious to the incredible ingenuity of the Yoruba nation of Nigeria; they invented an entire rhythmic system that is as complex as it is simple, based on a 5-beat phrase/pattern that repeats to induce the trance effect of ritual dances. If the music you hear causes the urge to dance, the main ingredient is that pattern we know as "clave". At this point, the culture that overwhelmingly adopted and celebrates that rhythmic system is the Hispanic culture.
I love this video because it shares what is so beautiful about the people of Bahia in Brazil. It surpasses the difficulties and challenges of that beautiful state with the native spirit of the Bahaianas.
Strange thing happened to me: when he appears, you can see his mother suddenly smiling and staring at him. Made me think about my folks so much, that I had to call them. Such things make us remember our dear ones and realize how much we actually love them. Great song and video!
PS: desculpe-me Português, aprendo agora
Adoro Minha querida e belíssima CATOLÉ DO ROCHA.
remember seeing this back on one of these cable channels the show was called hello world, where it played music from all over the world. i instantly liked the song the first time i listened to it, recall searching youtube to see if it had the video way back when and it didn't at the time..lol
Adoro a musica dele.
OH yeah that's quite funny....... reminds me of Buddy Guy's show in Baltimore; Buddy always comes off stage, playing solo via wireless...... he'll go outside the venue, work his way back to the stage. I'd been generous to the bartender, so to speak. When Buddy came past us we followed him out the door...... I reached over to pat him on the shoulder and got struck by lightning...... one of his bodyguards blocked it and I mean in 100th of a blink of an eye...... almost as quick as that girl :)
When it gets cold, dark, snowy, and I here this music, I just wanna dance, I smile, and I forget the unforgiving Canadian winter blues!
Parebens pra Chico.
Thank you!
I also love the simplicity of the Brazilian people!
Glad you enjoy!
BEAUTIFUL MUSIC FROM BACK IN THE DAY WHEN THE BROWN MAN ACKNOWLEDGED AND RESPECTED AND LOVED HIS BLACK INDIGENOUS AFRICAN ROOTS

I love this video because it shares what is so beautiful about the people of Bahia in Brazil. It surpasses the difficulties and challenges of that beautiful state with the native spirit of the Bahaianas.
The video/song/artist are not from Bahia but from the Northeastern state of Paraíba, the town of Catolé da Rocha.

This video is absolutely fantastic in its own simplicity. It's moving. And the line "ser negao do Senegal deve ser legal" is genious. Love it.
