  • Every year St Mary's Church in Twickenham hosts a town fair. This year, it included an art & textiles section within the church itself, alongside outdoor stalls which comprised of face-painting, tombola and many more. The best bit - however - was the Tower Tour & Ringing Demonstration!
The first part of the day was focused on ringing. We gave ourselves the task opening the fair with some ringing at 11am, along with a demonstration at 12PM. The bells are notoriously loud outside hence why we kept the ringing to a minimum. They are quite a meaty octave: cast by William I Eldridge, Richard Phelps, John Saunders and John Taylor's to the key of Eb - the tonal properties of the bells have connotations of not only age, but also grandness. They are a fairly mid-weight ring, coming in at 18cwt on the scales. Here, we have Call Changes on all 8 - including Queens and Kings.
At 2pm, Thomas and I decided to join the next Tower Tour, where one could head all the way up the spiral staircase, past the bells and on to the roof. The view - on a day like that - was stunning. We could see landmarks tens of miles away! I point out the key Points of Interest in this video, including: St Matthias' Church in Richmond, All Hallows Church in Twickenham, The Arch of Wembley Stadium, and the Control Tower of London Heathrow Airport! Oh, and Thomas investigated how loud he needed to shout so that one of the ringers in the fair below could hear him!
What a good way to spend a delightful Saturday morning & early afternoon. Afterwards I headed off to Battersea for a wedding, alas this was not recorded!
The Church of St Mary, Twickenham, is affiliated to the South & West District (S&W) of the Middlesex County Association & London Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers (MCALDG).

Thanks - very nice to see twikers - I lived in Twickenham from (1978 to 1 987) - played golf at the (9 hole golf course - and later next door at Fulwell - I still have very fund memories of my years in Twickenham - I met Harry Wilson at the 9 hole golf course and he was instrumental in the fact that I started golf at age 38 years old and in 3 years I was on single numbers - with Harry being my most important instructor - Harry gave me the Ben Hogan Golf Classic -
it took (3 years to understand this masterpiece reading AND STUDYING AS IF FOR AN EXAM - DAILY) - IN 1978, I MET PETER BUC HAN - WHILE HE WAS AN ASSISTANT AT THE (9 NINE HOLE GOLF COURSE - PETER IS NOW THE PROFESSIANAL AT Strawberry Hilll golf club - (NEXT DOOR TO NWICKENHAM) - HE HAS BEEN (HEAD PRO) THERE FOR VERY MANY YEARS - Very pleasant memories indeed -

Glad to hear about your golfing adventures in Twickenham: it really is a delightful place, wouldn't complain if I lived there! It doesn't feel like you're still in London when you are there, even though you'd have to get past Heathrow just to escape into Berkshire/Surrey. I'm always discovering so many enjoyable places whilst on these ringing trips...

Simple answer. It's on a hill. Twickenham (and pretty much everywhere else around it for about 5 miles) isn't.

why can't trains up north have more carriages instead of either 1 or 2. (Non Main lines). Cool video

I agree! It's declined a bit in the South too. Train companies make the stupid decision of retiring stock (which is still perfectly capable of doing their job, e.g. the Southern 455/8) without ordering a replacement for it, or without cascading a set of stock from another company. Things would be very different if I was the Secretary of State for Transport...
