And after this game, instead of going back to Chapel Hill with the rest of the team to take part in the victory celebration, he flew up to Philadelphia to recruit the number one recruit in the high school class of 1993, a big man named Rasheed Wallace. Sheed said the fact that he did that really resonated with him and that’s what influenced him to become a Tar Heel, joining Jeff McInnis and Jerry Stackhouse who had already signed their LOI’s.

What everyone seems to forget about the end of this monumental game:
    1. Carolina was in the lead, not behind, when Webber tried to call the timeout.
    2. Carolina had only 3 team fouls. Had Webber not tried to call timeout, the Heels could have easily run down a lot of clock with a lead by fouling 4 straight times. There were only 19 seconds on the clock when he got the rebound of Sullivan's miss of the back end of the one-and-one, and only 11 seconds left when he signaled timeout.
    3. Lynch and Phelps, with only 11 seconds left, had Webber pinned in the corner with nowhere to go. This is why he tried to call the timeout.
    4. Speaking of timeouts, Webber had also tried to call one at the other end as soon as he got the rebound. However, the referee, Jim Stupin, purposefully looked away, knowing the Wolverines were out of timeouts, because he "wanted to give the kid a break." (He was asked about this later, and those were his words.) This caused him to miss the obvious travel, which everyone else watching who had any basketball knowledge whatsoever didn't fail to notice.

Glad I got to grow up with late 80's through early to mid 00's college hoops. The experience/level of continuity of some of these top teams from that era was unique. Michigan had it by 1993 but this UNC team was a Dean Smith special; understated excellence. Went 34-4, spent basically the entire year in the Top 5 yet is somewhat forgotten. Shows the cultural influence of the Big 5. Temple had their chances to take out Michigan in the West regional final. Depth and foul trouble took their toll on the Owls the last 5 minutes.

  • @meharinationsportspodcast2582

Did anyone notice that the ref blatantly saw the travel but had no knowledge to call it. Imagine this, if Webber doesn't call the timeout and if Michigan scores then that call would have played as the worst call in basketball.
Now, if you watch the Fab Five documentary they explained the entire sequence. As Webber grabbed the rebound you can see Michigan backup PG #14 Mike Talley putting up the timeout signal before Chris dribbled the ball toward the Michigan bench which caused confusion because as he came to the bench he shouted "TIMEOUT!!!" and Webber heard it which was instinctive to put up the timeout signal.
This has psychologically damaged Webber to this day and you feel for him because he was the man responsible for leading his team to the title game. Now, he distanced himself from the other Fab Five member because of this moment. I hope someday he can find it in his heart to let go of the pain and finally find some closure.

That kind of takes credit away from unc to say Michigan took them for granted. Plus if they were the better team they should have by more if they did take them lightly. I would say they were about even and unc just mad more plays down the stretch. Plus the weber to didn't help.

If there was a Mt. Rushmore for college basketball coaches, Dean Smith would certainly be on it. Wooden, Smith, Krzyzewski and then....not sure about the fourth one. Many would say Bobby Knight but his inability to reign in his temper makes him less than a great sportsman in my book.
It’s great to live in North Carolina, which has more men’s NCAA basketball championships than any other state besides California. And N.C. Is the only state that has at least three schools with multiple championships. North Carolina has six, Duke has five and North Carolina State has two.
