Cheat meals are one of the most asked about topics when it comes to bodybuilding and workout nutrition. Everyone wants to know how often it is ok to indulge in cheat meals and whether it is possible to have them and still be ripped. It is just another one of those nutrition questions that people seem to get hung up on, rightfully so, on their way to getting a six pack. In this video, I’m going to cover the hard truth about cheat meals and give you all the facts so that you can decide for yourself.
First, we have to define what a cheat meal actually is. In my opinion we are not talking about foods like steak, pizza, pasta, potatoes, or mint chocolate chip frozen yogurt. Those are actually just foods that are not only part of my recommended meal plan but what I eat in a single day. Instead, I am referring to those foods that are loaded with fats, carbohydrates or calories that are typically served with a death certificate along with a napkin.
That said, as long as we are defining these indulgences the same way I would say that you have to ask yourself 4 questions when it comes to deciding how important cheat meals are to you.
First, you have to ask if the meal plan you are on right now is making you feel deprived. Most diets and diet plans do exactly that. They revolve around the concept of deprivation. No carbs. No fats. No wheat. While this is something you can likely follow for the short term you will not likely be able to stick to this for any meaningful period of time. If this is you, you might find yourself craving cheat meals.
Next, you have to ask what your fitness goals are. I have a brand that I am the face of that I believe I must represent honorably. Because of this, I follow a pretty rigid eating plan. You on the other hand may be perfectly happy having 8 percent body fat and still being able to eat some cheat meals every now and then. It’s totally possible as long as you follow the remainder of the rules I put forth in the video.
You also have to determine your level of motivation and how likely you are to not allow a cheat meal to turn into a cheat day and a cheat week. Staying the course long term again is the goal of any nutrition strategy. One that includes cheating or not.
At the end of the day, eating the right foods and having good nutrition is important for getting your six pack abs to show year round. You can’t eat unhealthy foods and follow a bad diet and think that you are going to be showing good muscle definition. That said, while this can be the hardest part for many it doesn’t have to be complicated. Simplify your nutrition with the X Factor Meal Plans included in the ATHLEAN-X Training System that you can get at athleanx.com today.

I think a good rule of thumb for eating healthier/cleaner is not to necessarily think about what meal to "cheat" with, or what to cut out of your nutrition plan, but rather to start ADDING healthier foods to your daily routine. Drink more water, eat more vegetables, eat more lean meats. In my experience once you start doing this, it will become a habit and you will eventually desire the healthier foods more than the processed ones. Good luck with your goals everyone!

Absolutely right when you say that you don't advocate "cheat days". I used to have that problem where if I had a cheat meal for breakfast my mentality was 'Oh, I already fucked up today so might as well fuck up some more and enjoy it. I'll get back on it tomorrow!" Wrong. It's a slippery slope. Now I treat my cheat meals as something to earn and I make sure it's actually tasty food and not just something that's bad for me.

A tip for women; try your best not to cheat when it's that time of the month. It's a lot harder to stop yourself once you've started. Been there, done that. Instead, I'll allow myself a small cheat here and there during the rest of the month, but I'll stay very on track during my period. Because i know I'm less active during that time and my self-control goes out the window. Just my two cents.

To be fair, at least in America, the culture isn’t conducive to a healthy lifestyle. We’re constantly blasted with advertisements and commercials for junk/fast food, nutritional science is confusing and poorly taught in most schools, and calorie-dense nutrition-poor foods are cheap and widely available.
It’s an uphill battle not only with your own mind, but the society of consumption that we face on the daily.

I'm 14 years old and have just lost 63 pounds the past year I went from 205 lbs at 5'5" to 143 lbs at 5'6" and have put on a lot of lean muscle on. During this journey I did have a few cheat meals (not cheat days) but it never really bothered me as I make my workouts longer on those days and do an explosive fat burning circuit I didn't have a lot of equipment up until Christmas in fact all I had were 2 Dumbbells until up to then I just used my body weight with determination, dedication and willpower to get to where I am now and aspiring to be even leaner and buffer so if you're complaining about not having little or no equipment BULLSHIT, if you really wanna change you should be willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it, most people say they're gonna workout and get lean to try and look better, but do they all do whatever it takes? No of course not luckily I wasn't one of those who gave up, I've been working out everyday for well over 400 days and I just wanna say thank you Jeff!

i think the biggest problem is that people don't know how to turn motivation into commitment. buzzphrases like "cheat meal" or "on a diet" wouldn't even have to exist if people who wanted to live a healthy lifestyle would just commit to living a healthy lifestyle. If you make exercise a part of your daily life, if you learn a little bit about nutrition and how to balance it, you can have a goddamn burrito or a little bit of pasta whenever you want without it having any major impact on your health. If you are committed to a healthy lifestyle those sorts of meals are just going to get buried by your natural good habits. Of course, if you don't care about these sorts of things, eat whatever the hell you want and do whatever you want. I just can't stand people who are constantly eating horribly and feeling bad about it, or going "on a diet" for six weeks before reverting back to the same habits they hate themselves for.

I love rice. after following you I finally changed white rice to brown rice. been eating chicken, broccoli, and jukni. protein shake between.
I rarely drink now days. maybe 2-3 times a year for friend's party. I don't really like junk food maybe some cookies and energy drink here and there, but changed it to black coffee once or twice a day when I am really sleepy around 4pm and 9pm.
I just want to have health life style and be super successful with my life. done making 30k a year. I am 31 now failed my life last year. been working on myself. ever since I found this channel I been going to gym 5 times a week lol put day first time. just quick work out with your tips. 4 different work out (I am sure I will change when I am in more shape). cardio. and finish it with sauna/stretching.
I love this channel. always try to watch one or two videos to get me going. I am done being lazy and playing video games. sick of getting mad at me and others for my failure.
I want to be able to go South Korea without having to worry about money, and have time to visit my family there. just want to be happy, and be person someone can look up to.
thank you for all your hard work and tips. I am following your lead. I will catch up.

I'll just say this much, I like how he asks "What are your goals"? Every single physical trainer I have ever known tries to get me "PUMPED"!!! What if i don't wanna get fucking pumped!!?? What if I simply want to start gradually getting in better shape, and build better eating and exercise habits that I can stick to long term? When those idiots try to get me "PUMPED", all they ever end up doing is turning me off from their exercise plan!

    • @cimmeranepoch7439
      @cimmeranepoch7439 Před 7 lety +4

Fundamentally the only goals that have any serious chance of working for anyone are their own goals. If someone does not want to get "PUMPED", they will not stay pumped, because they have not made the personal commitment to make it happen in their own lives. Then when they get fat again after getting "PUMPED" they'll feel far worse about themselves than when they started.

My philosophy is be an 85%'er, This is where you eat clean 85% of the time and what you want the other 15%. Also, for staying lean calorie intake is what matters most. So if you're able to track how many calories are in your favorite cheat meal and adjust your day accordingly, you can still stay lean. Intermittent fasting actually helps a lot with this. But, I do agree that timing the cheat meal is the best way to go. I always love to have a cheat meal post workout when your body is more in need of carbs for recovery.

I've given up working out so many times due to eating nothing but chicken brown rice and green beans and so on. I couldn't stick to cause it was blah. I constantly overthought the nutrition part but you give me hope unlike every other CZcams channel.i started small yesterday and gave up sugary drinks for water. It's small but you give me hope to change for the better Thank you
