Cheat meals are one of the most asked about topics when it comes to bodybuilding and workout nutrition. Everyone wants to know how often it is ok to indulge in cheat meals and whether it is possible to have them and still be ripped. It is just another one of those nutrition questions that people seem to get hung up on, rightfully so, on their way to getting a six pack. In this video, I’m going to cover the hard truth about cheat meals and give you all the facts so that you can decide for yourself.
First, we have to define what a cheat meal actually is. In my opinion we are not talking about foods like steak, pizza, pasta, potatoes, or mint chocolate chip frozen yogurt. Those are actually just foods that are not only part of my recommended meal plan but what I eat in a single day. Instead, I am referring to those foods that are loaded with fats, carbohydrates or calories that are typically served with a death certificate along with a napkin.
That said, as long as we are defining these indulgences the same way I would say that you have to ask yourself 4 questions when it comes to deciding how important cheat meals are to you.
First, you have to ask if the meal plan you are on right now is making you feel deprived. Most diets and diet plans do exactly that. They revolve around the concept of deprivation. No carbs. No fats. No wheat. While this is something you can likely follow for the short term you will not likely be able to stick to this for any meaningful period of time. If this is you, you might find yourself craving cheat meals.
Next, you have to ask what your fitness goals are. I have a brand that I am the face of that I believe I must represent honorably. Because of this, I follow a pretty rigid eating plan. You on the other hand may be perfectly happy having 8 percent body fat and still being able to eat some cheat meals every now and then. It’s totally possible as long as you follow the remainder of the rules I put forth in the video.
You also have to determine your level of motivation and how likely you are to not allow a cheat meal to turn into a cheat day and a cheat week. Staying the course long term again is the goal of any nutrition strategy. One that includes cheating or not.
At the end of the day, eating the right foods and having good nutrition is important for getting your six pack abs to show year round. You can’t eat unhealthy foods and follow a bad diet and think that you are going to be showing good muscle definition. That said, while this can be the hardest part for many it doesn’t have to be complicated. Simplify your nutrition with the X Factor Meal Plans included in the ATHLEAN-X Training System that you can get at athleanx.com today.

Whats a carrot cake?
yum. I tried a carrot cake once. It is now my favorite cake. I am craving for one now....
Nah I’m not living like that. Life’s to short
I love how he says” how mentally tough are you for a cheat meal”. In my experience once I cheat I can’t stop. Great insight on him
Certain foods like pizza and ice cream I find it's easier to just never eat. Once I get that taste of pizza in my mouth, I don't want just one slice. I want the whole pizza, lol.
Well it's ok if u don't shoot too high over your daily kcals
+ThatKidOverThere you do realise IFBB pros drink beer and eat pizzas and doughnuts quite often...Flex Wheeler used to binge drink and Columbo had red wine every day...Arnie had a jug of beer after workouts...the drugs they take make all the difference
+ThatKidOverThere I use minced seasoned chicken thighs as my pizza base instead of dough, then just concentrated tomato-paste with oregano and with my favorite toppings.
+ThatKidOverThere I know right lol. Ayye as long as it fits your macros, your good to go, eat the whole box if you want. One day wont hurt you, as long as you don't make it a habit. "Moderation" is key :)
+ThatKidOverThere Then buy a pizza that you can eat the entirety of, like a small one or something
I think a good rule of thumb for eating healthier/cleaner is not to necessarily think about what meal to "cheat" with, or what to cut out of your nutrition plan, but rather to start ADDING healthier foods to your daily routine. Drink more water, eat more vegetables, eat more lean meats. In my experience once you start doing this, it will become a habit and you will eventually desire the healthier foods more than the processed ones. Good luck with your goals everyone!
James!!!! I love your workouts!
+Caitlyn McCarthy thanks Caitlyn I'm glad I could be helpful
+Peak Condition Well said! I don't like the word "cheat"
+Peak Condition i agree with you!
Agreed, I've found my problem with "falling off the wagon" is being hurt or sick for a long period of time,. it sucks to be off for a while and think to yourself " it's only a matter of time, I'm going back, I can have that bowl of ice cream, that pizza, ect." Discipline, and will power are the keys here
When u actually work hard, trust me, you won't want to completely throw it away with a pointless cheat meal
True statement!
I do
I feel that
You dont completely throw it away
@@user-ic1lo9wh5f exactly, even if you eat like shit regularly it still takes some time to start getting out of shape
My cheat days are my birthday, thanksgiving, Christmas and new years.
Absolutely right when you say that you don't advocate "cheat days". I used to have that problem where if I had a cheat meal for breakfast my mentality was 'Oh, I already fucked up today so might as well fuck up some more and enjoy it. I'll get back on it tomorrow!" Wrong. It's a slippery slope. Now I treat my cheat meals as something to earn and I make sure it's actually tasty food and not just something that's bad for me.
I have my favorite broccoli twice a year...
underrated
😂😂😂😂
A tip for women; try your best not to cheat when it's that time of the month. It's a lot harder to stop yourself once you've started. Been there, done that. Instead, I'll allow myself a small cheat here and there during the rest of the month, but I'll stay very on track during my period. Because i know I'm less active during that time and my self-control goes out the window. Just my two cents.
Laurelle Burton this comment makes so much sense right now! Today I have been eating terribly, but it's not been the meals but the snacking! Then I started cramping... and realized no wonder in just feeding my face.
Laurelle Burton naturally women have bad self control.
Pierre Alarie AHHAHHHAHA WHOT DA FOCK AHHAHHAHAHHA~~~🤣
Good tip. I lose control during my period.
👏👏👏
I started crying when he said "what is your reaction when you look at yourself" lol
Why stop at a cheat meal? Push the limits. Do a cheat meal. A cheat month. A cheat year. Don’t limit yourself, guys.

I quit smoking and it was hard the first week now i just don't need them and i don't ever crave them, on the other hand i have been eating healthy for 2 months now and i think about pizza every single day...
Still a better habit to miss pizza!
Francisco Quiñones i stay shredded and eat a large dominos with everything every week lol
I feel you man I just quit smoking too and it is wayyyy easier than sticking to a healthy diet
Pizza is life!
Simz Zxy When people say pizza. Most people are not thinking home made. They are thinking fast food.
most ppl are not mentally tough
@KassKass It only takes discipline, remember that, you will get used to, trust me.
@KassKass np bro
To be fair, at least in America, the culture isn’t conducive to a healthy lifestyle. We’re constantly blasted with advertisements and commercials for junk/fast food, nutritional science is confusing and poorly taught in most schools, and calorie-dense nutrition-poor foods are cheap and widely available.
It’s an uphill battle not only with your own mind, but the society of consumption that we face on the daily.
@@Matt.62 more like American lifestyle isn't conducive to being self disciplined
@@Matt.62 you got youtube right? You have local gym and grocery store? If the answer is yes, the only reason you are not consistent is because you lack discipline. No one is shoving bad food in your throat and the information you need for healthy foods is on YT....
*fat ass*
I'm 14 years old and have just lost 63 pounds the past year I went from 205 lbs at 5'5" to 143 lbs at 5'6" and have put on a lot of lean muscle on. During this journey I did have a few cheat meals (not cheat days) but it never really bothered me as I make my workouts longer on those days and do an explosive fat burning circuit I didn't have a lot of equipment up until Christmas in fact all I had were 2 Dumbbells until up to then I just used my body weight with determination, dedication and willpower to get to where I am now and aspiring to be even leaner and buffer so if you're complaining about not having little or no equipment BULLSHIT, if you really wanna change you should be willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it, most people say they're gonna workout and get lean to try and look better, but do they all do whatever it takes? No of course not luckily I wasn't one of those who gave up, I've been working out everyday for well over 400 days and I just wanna say thank you Jeff!
Thank you for teaching me everything I know and you were right there is no excuses!
+SgtFitnessOnline thank you man, I've just got my new bench and sets of weights yesterday for Christmas so I can properly build up my muscles even more :)
+SgtFitnessOnline to look lean and muscular for my age and I kinda got all of them as presents on Christmas Day
+SpecialFXSGaming yo dude congrats, just two Dumbbells and body weight is really impressive. Keep it up man
+Roger Clarke I'm 14 years old and 5'6" inches and Jeff is only 165 lbs and he's ripped I don't want to be over 200 lbs for my age and height thank you

i like steamed broccoli.....i can eat it every day and not be upset lol

I had a problem with brocolli, had hard time digestion because it's a FODMAP, I use kale now, 1000 times better

I was 28% body fat, came all the way down to 12% while having 1-2 cheat days per week. Now I'm trying to get to 9% but it's simply not possible to have a cheat day anymore lol.
Brad Suarez how long did it take you?
9 months losing roughly 1.5 lbs a week.
Do you have instagram
I'm 6% bodyfst and work at a deepdish pizza restaurant, eating that and mcdonalds many times a week. Maybe 800 calories a day of cheat, the rest good

Spongegar I do too except for the brown rice...I didn't add enough water :/
Yeah proper 🤨
Fernando True, and people always ask you "it must be hard to eat that all the time?"
No I actually like it...
You just shifted my entire perspective on cheat meals. By making them myself, I can make something just as good as what I would have out (literally the same thing) and make it better for me. It's a cheat, but not a plan derailment. Thank you so much. You seriously have no idea how much that just helped. You have a new subscriber.
I noticed for myself that one cheat-day destroyed two diet days so I'm trying to avoid these days from now on
Same here! All I had was a movie theater burger with fries and some popcorn. That was the only cheat meal for the week. Took another week and a half just to get back to where I was.
Fckin same!
Cake...twice a year? Thats waaay too restrictive. A piece of cake even once a month is not gonna break the bank, i think. That sounds crazy to me.
Cake once for your birthday, then the other is for someone elses birthday
+Shazzkid I dont if its on labor day and christmas, twice a year seems crazy for any indulgence, cheat meal, etc. To each his own.
+LAKE4742 it depends on how much of a sweet tooth you have
one question though, is jeff referring to two slices of cake per year or eating cake twice a year? because eating two slices of cake in a year is too restrictive indeed
Gym Life i invite you to try and use some common sense here
i think the biggest problem is that people don't know how to turn motivation into commitment. buzzphrases like "cheat meal" or "on a diet" wouldn't even have to exist if people who wanted to live a healthy lifestyle would just commit to living a healthy lifestyle. If you make exercise a part of your daily life, if you learn a little bit about nutrition and how to balance it, you can have a goddamn burrito or a little bit of pasta whenever you want without it having any major impact on your health. If you are committed to a healthy lifestyle those sorts of meals are just going to get buried by your natural good habits. Of course, if you don't care about these sorts of things, eat whatever the hell you want and do whatever you want. I just can't stand people who are constantly eating horribly and feeling bad about it, or going "on a diet" for six weeks before reverting back to the same habits they hate themselves for.
Athleanx is by far the most helpful channel I’ve come across for weight loss. From 244->174 @ 6’3. By no means am I jacked but this is the first time I haven’t been overweight since I was about 14/15? I’m 19 now and I couldn’t be more thankful for the no BS content. Thank you so much, Jeff!
I love rice. after following you I finally changed white rice to brown rice. been eating chicken, broccoli, and jukni. protein shake between.
I rarely drink now days. maybe 2-3 times a year for friend's party. I don't really like junk food maybe some cookies and energy drink here and there, but changed it to black coffee once or twice a day when I am really sleepy around 4pm and 9pm.
I just want to have health life style and be super successful with my life. done making 30k a year. I am 31 now failed my life last year. been working on myself. ever since I found this channel I been going to gym 5 times a week lol put day first time. just quick work out with your tips. 4 different work out (I am sure I will change when I am in more shape). cardio. and finish it with sauna/stretching.
I love this channel. always try to watch one or two videos to get me going. I am done being lazy and playing video games. sick of getting mad at me and others for my failure.
I want to be able to go South Korea without having to worry about money, and have time to visit my family there. just want to be happy, and be person someone can look up to.

changing to brown rice won't make a difference. Just eat the white
all the best to you buddy
Great content. Thanks Jeff!
+Mario Tomic Do you attribute your excellent core condition to proper diet, and would that be about 70 percent of it and exercise the remainder.
+Brian Kelly 4 elements: training, diet, recovery and mindset. Each one 25%. I know without doing all 4 guys can get to a great condition but to get years of consistency, make it a lifestyle and who you are as a person requires all 4.
+Mario Tomic Thanks for the advise. I am getting there but I need to tighten up my diet a little bit more which is tied in with my mindset. I know I need to be smarter on recovery but I have the consistency down.
+Mario Tomic almost every video that he makes reminds me why i subcribed

After losing 45 kg i have no need for cheat meals or bad foods :) I don't crave for anything i loved to eat when i was fat... guess i'm good
Tech Stuff agreed had someone tell me that years ago and I told them they were crazy but now I'm down 75 pounds and enjoy working out and have food that I really like even more than the junk I used to eat
Tech Stuff you are not good, you are awesome!
That's amazing
How? Oh wait read wrong it says need, but do you still eat what you love once in a while?
i lost 35kg and now im having cheat meals once a week so i can stay on the path of healthy living but i didnt have any when i was on weight loss
AHHHHH MY PARENTS BOUGHT PIZZA ALL MY FAMILY MEMBERS EAT IT WHILE IM ON MY ROOM CRYING
Honestly I like when that happens. Because when I look at it and ignore it, I know I have that mentality that I dont need it and could just look at it and totally ignore it. I only started eating healthy 3 months ago and its come to the point where seeing my family eat that type of shit makes me happy cuz im getting gains and they not. Just my insight doe
TheFamous NoBoDy I agree lmao... it’s that feeling of sweet condescending superiority that comes from eating healthy and working out
The other day my sister and cousins bought mc Donald’s and I did not buy anything. I just like to think that they are the ones who are unhealthy and I’m ok
@@ryanaldm2966 I get you totally. I feel sorry for the ones that actually eat junk everyday now. I started working out 2 weeks back and have started a healthy diet. Even though I'm trying to gain weight , I am doing it the healthy way.
I don't even exercise like that when I begin a serious weight loss. Here's why I need to lose a certain amount of weight to get motivated then I start exercising with more intensity and become more faithful in eating less on the daily. When I see that weight going down no way would I sabotage myself.
A cheat meal once a week or once every so often wont hurt. every so often i have myself some chicken nuggets from McDonalds and on the odd occasion i have KFC. Im still loosing weight as we speak.
+RoseOfHizaki Thumbs up just because of Hizaki
Stop eating McDonald's/KFC. It's fucking dog food.
Zem woof
On a side note, I sometimes have some chicken shish with a salad down at my local kebab shop (chunks of chicken grilled over hot coals)
Use your cheat meal on food that is actually food.
Look myself in the mirror, huh? Hell, yeah, slap that belly and make it dance, biatches!
😂😂😂🤣😂🤣🤣🤣
Lol
God bless you 😂😂😂
You are definitely at the top of your class, Jeff. Thank you so much for all of your work.
man. 2 minutes in and I already know this is the good stuff right here. All kinds of useful advice.
My cheat days are Fridays and I choose one meal and one flavor sweet, salty, sour etc... to go all out and then I go right back on my strict diet.
What Jeff's method would work better for most people but if you can eat a restrictive 6 days a week and can be fine with cheating once a week and can maintain that plan that sounds good
The68VeeDub that's tough... This lead to my BED, but if it works for you great
my cheat meal is 8-10 ounces of whiskey every thursday. sugar only tastes good for a few seconds so i decided to just get rid of it. Being able to see my 8 pack at any given time is more of a treat than donuts, i just cant give up a good buzz though so i cut out beer and stick with whiskey
My cheat meal is pizza.
And the problem is not pizza being a cheat meal because I'm not afraid of fat and carbs ruining my nutrition, I eat them all day every day.
Problem is I like pizza and I will eat all of it.
So when it comes to pizza I'm better off not getting anywhere near it because just eating SOME pizza just isn't possible for me.
Same man, you put a pizza in front of me, I’m not gonna be like “just one slice so I can stay healthy.” Hell no. I’m gonna inhale that shit. The whole thing
I feel your pain
I agree with you
I believe that pizza is one of the seven basic food groups, is it not?
Try a personal pizza instead of ordering a medium/large. Portion size during cheat meals is still a thing lol
The best video about cheat meals.
I didn't drink coke and junk foods for almost 2 years and I'm getting more and more resistance everyday against the urge to cheat.
i found this channel the other day, i started doing a workout routine from athlean x today, this video and this channel really has helped me get a hold of my new healthier lifestyle. thank you jeff and god bless.

Lol
This is a great video and i enjoy to watch them en i even use your tips from the exercises so keep up the good work
This is a brilliant video. Exactly what I needed right now!
I'll just say this much, I like how he asks "What are your goals"? Every single physical trainer I have ever known tries to get me "PUMPED"!!! What if i don't wanna get fucking pumped!!?? What if I simply want to start gradually getting in better shape, and build better eating and exercise habits that I can stick to long term? When those idiots try to get me "PUMPED", all they ever end up doing is turning me off from their exercise plan!
Fundamentally the only goals that have any serious chance of working for anyone are their own goals. If someone does not want to get "PUMPED", they will not stay pumped, because they have not made the personal commitment to make it happen in their own lives. Then when they get fat again after getting "PUMPED" they'll feel far worse about themselves than when they started.
Cimmeran Epoch if a trainer trying to get you 'pumped' is all it takes to put you off exercise, you're doomed to fail.
You just completely ignored EVERYTHING I said!
Most trainers are a joke. When I go to commercial gyms I see trainers put their clients on the same program they are doing; young, old, man, or woman doesn't matter. Pretty funny seeing old dudes with a female trainer doing curtsy squats.
Yeah the problem is that physical trainers know how to do exercises properly. So if I don't deal with them I'll never get proper instructions on just how to do which exercise, thus creating the probability that I'll harm myself while exercising.
I would like to see more on nutrition
Hey Jeff, I really appreciate all your videos. They are very inspiring and instructional. You have helped me a great deal! 😎👍
Hey Jeff this was a very honest and great video thanks man . Thanks for being this raw and honest really appreciate it

I subscribe to your channel because there is a lot of honesty and you are being realistic in many aspects.
I would like to see you do a video about how bulking up and cutting down works, how to do that and what should we eat when we want to bulk up / cut down.
You are awesome dude! Please keep it up. I’m learning a lot🔥
My philosophy is be an 85%'er, This is where you eat clean 85% of the time and what you want the other 15%. Also, for staying lean calorie intake is what matters most. So if you're able to track how many calories are in your favorite cheat meal and adjust your day accordingly, you can still stay lean. Intermittent fasting actually helps a lot with this. But, I do agree that timing the cheat meal is the best way to go. I always love to have a cheat meal post workout when your body is more in need of carbs for recovery.
I'm in school at the moment and I can sort of control my breakfast but that's about it my lunch and my dinner are pre determined and my dinner is pretty good because I have a very healthy family and we eat good food but my lunch is also pretty good but every once in a while well once a week we have pizza and every once in awhile things like taco or burritos are these alright to eat?
I enjoy how straight up you are, great video. Everybody's "cheat meals" must be different and specific to that person because not everyones body or fitness goals are the same.
hey is really motivated and really cares.plus he breaks it down step by step.great job.and makes you think about where your going.
“Carrot cake twice a year” needs to be on a T-shirt
I eat clean 95% of the time but when i do slip up i feel so guilty
Don’t worry. If u eat healthy MOST of the times u should be good, unless u lying to urself
Great content as always!
I've given up working out so many times due to eating nothing but chicken brown rice and green beans and so on. I couldn't stick to cause it was blah. I constantly overthought the nutrition part but you give me hope unlike every other CZcams channel.i started small yesterday and gave up sugary drinks for water. It's small but you give me hope to change for the better Thank you
Good idea! I will take my 10 Big Macs to go and eat them at home :D
