Furniture Flip Using Fusion Mineral Paint + Why I May Never Use Chalk Paint Again

  • Recently I came across this enormous buffet that needed some serious love. If you follow me, you know I love Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint and do not recommend any other brand of chalk paint. But I was curious to try something completely different and I recently came across Fusion Mineral Paint and was so attracted to the packaging, I had to give it a try. Watch to see how this paint works and why I'm never using chalk paint on furniture again!
    Also, this stuff is SO durable, I didn't mention that in the video, but I am amazed at the durability of this paint.

    SOLD! I have used Fusion on my daughter's bedroom set and loved how it turned out. Now I am looking to renovate old orange pine coffee and end tables and after watching 10,000 other videos on DIY painting furniture, this is the winner. Love the recommendation on the sealer as well. I just wanted to add, as a Fusion seller, we ALWAYS recommend a scuff sand before painting. Prep is key and Fusion is an acrylic paint so it doesn't have the same adhesion qualities as chalk paint.

    I want to add a quick note. I've seen fusion reps comment on videos like this. Kudos on the great content.
    Second, fusion reps frequently comment that their mineral paint is designed to be applied by using very little paint on the brush and very few brush strokes to apply.
    I've used fusion an it is very fun to spread around like butter but next time I will try to do as few strokes as possible.
    Their own fusion brush is very thick so it makes sense that if you use their dense brush, a little paint is actually a good amount of paint vs that thinner Wooster brush in this video.

    Thank you, great video. I just wanted to know potentially some pros and cons of chalk paint vs the fusion. Can you distress the fusion paint like chalk paint? I am redoing my hutch and want and durable paint that I could potentially wipe with water is needed, therefore I am shying away from chalk paint and looking at the fusion, but want to distress the piece prior to sealing. Thank you.

    • @MeganBell
      @MeganBell  Před 3 lety +3

      It sounds like you are leaning toward Fusion, which I think is the right fit for your project. If you seal it with water based poly, you will be able to wipe it clean and it will definitely be durable. Fusion has a built in top coat, but I do suggest an extra coat or two of poly on top just to seal it and get rid of the matte feel. Chalk paint is great, but do think Fusion is much more durable. Yes, you can distress it and there are a few methods to do that with Fusion. Check out their youtube channel for some examples. It differs slightly from chalk paint, so you will want to look into that. Good luck on your project!

      I would STRONGLY suggest scuff-sanding to give your paint something to adhere to. Especially if there is a little shine to your cupboards.

    Hey Megan! Loved this video, I am researching now so I can paint my stepdaughters dresser and think Fusion is the best I have seen thus far; I am wondering if the poly top coat you used made the piece "sticky" at all? I specifically am avoiding latex paint because of that, it's a huge pet peeve of mine to have things "stick" to painted furniture and I know Fusion will not be sticky on its own, but also am leaning towards a top coat because my kids are crazy and I think the more durable the better lol, but want to make sure it wont have that sticky feel!

      Absolutely not a sticky feel. Fusion cures on its own in 21 days and doesn’t “need” a top coat which is really cool. It just has a very matte feel without a top coat so I opted for the poly on this piece to give it a softer feel. But sticky is not a word id use anywhere near fusion mineral paint.

    So no sanding prep needed, only good cleaning with the Simple Green?
