Tuckerman Ravine is nasty af, and it knows it. Year after year East coasters come back to Tucks, many having their eyes opened to some of the best tomahawking scenes in the industry.
First flight I ever did in NH with a paraglider (1987) was off the lip at Tuck's. The cheer after landing was big enough to inspire me to do it again. Which I did. Been living in the Mt.Washington valley for 35 years now.......
I skied Tuckerman's Ravine on the same day that the guys landed on the moon. Can't remember the date anymore (surprise) LOL. I recall making five hike up/runs. What a hoot. Still skiing after 1,000 + days.
Back in the seventies We ,about 20, used to go down for the May 24th long weekend from Quebec City. Many Canadians did, Staying at Pinkham. Notch. our goal to hike up,to the top via Tuckermans Ravine and the Right Gully just above the lunch rocks. We sat , ate lunch, and continued on up to the top. one time a group of us decided to go up Glen Boulder, Most came back down while I and another decided we would try to continue up and come down Bootspur. Twice we met people who needed help. One girl hiking alone with a heavy backpack had slipped while trying to cross log over a big boggy puddle. She was sitting on it with her feet dangling on each side. She couldnt get back up. Two people coming down also arrived and we all helped her then went on our merry ways. Then when coming down Bootspur we met another couple who had climbed up from the Hermit Lske Shelters to above treeline! In their cross country ski boots! I have no idea to this day how they even managed it. They were lost and didnt know how to get back down! What??! We told them to follow us and so they did. We got to tree line and instantly the snow was deep. As soon as we found a marked trail heading to the ski trail that runs down to Pinkham we took it. It was hard deep work to get through but made it. The couple headed back up and we headed back down and made it just in time for supper. That was one huge slog.
You see a lot of yard sales on Tuck's. I think a lot of them are a result of a lack of confidence and experience skiing on the steeps. It's actually not that difficult, it's more of a mind over matter. Jump turns and confidence in the no-fall-zone (where you'll pick up speed falling).
I've never once seen anyone travel a tenth of any of those yard sales. I've broken boots, skis, poles, coats, glasses, goggles, and a wine skin. All those put together wouldn't add up to one of those. Total ice?
I was gonna say, I'd never heard of this place but I'm pure west coast, based minutes from Heavenly. Our stuff does get icy and tracked out after weeks of no snow but we've all heard tales of east coast icy hell mountains.
I remember being up there as a 10 year old before I could ski it. I watched a guy in a similar spot hit that ravine and eat shit. I thought he had a Gatorade in his pocket, because as soon as he hit the snow red splattered all across it.
I did this under the "giant" at our local ski hill. Almost pure ice, second time skiiing ever, thought i was good and went for the big drop lol. Slid and rolled my yard saling ass down the whole thing right below the lift. Still remember some of the comments....

Kudos for the massive Yard Sale in front of that big a crowd........ guy's a natural entertainer. Question: How come there's so many people just hanging out there? I'm not familiar with this ski area.
It's Tuckerman's Ravine, which is a backcountry (not part of resort) ski area, on the side of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. All those people are sitting on "The Lunch Rocks" which are a big part of the Tucks experience. It's just a nice place to chill after you've hiked in, or between runs if you're doing multiple laps, or at the end of the day before you head out. A place for your ass and a nice view of the bowl, which is much, much steeper than what the video makes it seem.
