I’ve never driven the Highlander but was in one taking a Uber and it really was nice. I’m torn. But the CX-9 I can say I love. The only thing I didn’t like was when I hit 60-70mph it has a vibration in the front. Idk if that was because it was a rental or that’s the car itself.

I would strongly recommend not buying a Mazda. We purchased a brand new 2016 Mazda CX9 and within 2 years had problems with a rough idle. Was told after second year it just needed new spark plugs. Dealer could never recreate rough idle. 4 years later we took it in for an oil change and was told the cylinder head was leaking coolant.....Cylinder heads on back order for two months due to known problem of leaking. the only solution was either a refurbished engine or New engine from dealer. Warranty just expired but dealer and Mazda just say “sorry either return your loaner car or replace the engine at your cost” Horrible experience......$4600.00 lesson learned. Please do yourself a favor and do not purchase a $40,000 car from Mazda only to have to purchase a $4600.00 engine in less than 4 years and trade in value now only $14,000 after new engine. NEVER again!

It just is. I also do not like the design of the new Highlander. So far this model has been on the road for almost 5 years and there are high mileage examples out there with zero reported issues. Cx-9 sits on the same platform as the Mazda 3, just stretched out to its absolute limit, which means worse driving dynamics when you actually push it, less refinement and finish. Not sure why anyone would pick the cx9 over the highlander except for the looks.

Just drove better than the Honda & Toyota that both felt like minivans and the Highlander at the time was just dated...you’d be fooling yourself if you thought Toyota has better driving dynamics than the Mazda! Suggest you test drive both back to back to form a much better and well informed opinion. As an owner of already 3 Mazda vehicles, they’re on par with Toyota in terms of reliability but better handling and driving vehicles and much better designs!

@@Cruiser203 CX-9 sits on Mazda6's platform. While you're right that it's stretched to its limits in terms of platform it still does drive a lot more engagingly and lively than any other mainstream branded midsize SUV. Not only it drives better than Highlander, but also cabin of the CX-9 is more refined than Highlander's. And we do own a Highlander in our family, but currently we're thinking about switching to CX-9 just because it looks better and feels better in terms of quality. Not to mention it's built in Japan as opposed to Highlander which is built in the U.S. in Indiana plant. Yes, we may lose some cargo space and resale value when switching to CX-9, but that's just one of those sacrifices that we have to make when we want to get what we exactly like and want. We bought our Highlander because of Toyota's reliability and resale value, but it never felt like it's either engaging or fun to drive. And its design is just so bland.

Thanks for the review Sam. I'm just not a fan of the Mazda CX-9. The infotainment system is really dated and the cockpit area is tighter. Granted, you do get more steering feedback. I rented this car for two days for a road trip and actually pinched a nerve in my ankle. I found it difficult to find a comfortable driving position and I'm only 5"11. As for the exterior, looks are always subjective, the tail lights on the Mazda are too small. My gripes with the Highlander is they have a 12.3 screen but you cannot take full advantage of that because the AC/Heating controls always have to show and cannot be minimized - that makes no sense to me. Why tout the biggest infotainment screen in the industry but can't make full use of it - you should be able to maximize your favorite apps, especially NAV. Lastly, they could have added another inch or two to the width and length of the Highlander without "supersizing it"... However, the game changer is the Highlander hybrid and outside of the Ford Explorer, there are no real viable options in the segment.

My money would go for a Highlander because of the following elements:
    1. Classy, elegant and timeless outlook, some angle of CX9 especially the front end looks bulky.
    2. V6 NA engine with 8-speed transmission, responsive and effortless output at every rev.
    3. New and better interior design especially the cockpit and control console.
    4. Air vent grill for the third row which is absolutely good in summer time.
    5. Better storage capacity.
    6. Reliability and better resell value. Encountered side mirror motor failure on Mazda car.

Nice video Sam! But if space is what you're looking for, you wouldn't buy either one of these. The CX9 in fact, has less legroom than the Kia Sorento, which is one class down. Of these two, the Toyota is so much more modern and fresh.
