    Wow ! What a gorgeous layout. And what a lovely gentleman. Seeing him sitting there, in his 80s, still modelling, is wonderful. Hope I'm still going then. Love the scenic cameos.Well done Ken.

    I first met "Uncle" Ken well over 50 years ago when he visited us on his way down to have a business meeting with Mr Pritchard of Peco. I subsequently saw Tyling and he inspired me to build many of my own layouts, my last GWR branchline layout Ken saw and gave his seal of approval - high praise indeed! I have visited his "Last Great Project" several times, and it just doesn't get any better than that.

    That is the most beautiful model railway I have seen so far. His colors were spot on. I happen to reside in the states as an audio engineer, and once again I find the wonderful people who invented the English language, an endless source of amazement. It is widely known that Englishmen make the finest mixing consoles in the world. Let it also be known that they make the finest model railways. Really fine job here...excellent work...His colors for the backdrop were really top notch....much respect from st. Louis, by the Missisippi.

    This video contains no mention of cost. I would be interested in the value of particular items such as the locomotives, and the total cost of all the models in the layout. I have been looking at developing an O gauge layout, but so far have found the costs make it impossible. Is there a way to do this echonomically?

    • @whistlingspy

      EM Gauge is the same scale as 4mm but the track is at a gauge of 18mm (EM=Eighteen Millimetres). It's to give a more closer representation of the track gauge in real life where as 00 gauge is slightly narrower at a gauge of 16.5mm.

      @jazzman1626 Před 4 lety

      The grass is very flat, like a mat or just covered with felt. “Watch With Mother” used to be a kid’s tv program. I regret saying that now and I think it’s really lovely. Everyone has their own vision of the little worlds they build in layouts which makes it all so interesting. Reading my comment now, it feels a bit rude. Maybe I should delete it?

    • @fp7026
      @fp7026 Před 4 lety

      JAZZ MAN I understand now. If it's any consolation I didn't read what you wrote as rude at all, and it must be said that in many ways I agree with you. This layout is certainly a relic of a time when fine-scale modelling was in its infancy, but standards and methods have evolved ten-fold now, and I have to say that Ken's scenic modelling wouldn't hold up to modern exhibition standards. I emphasise "scenic modelling" as his buildings and structures are utterly superb, but his scenic modelling is very primitive, especially for a decades long project. But Ken was of a generation of railway modelling pioneers, and we have to appreciate them in the context of their time.

    • @jazzman1626
      @jazzman1626 Před 4 lety

      FP
      Ah, knowing more about the modeller makes a difference. It is good that it gives the nostalgic feeling. Now when I look at it I will enjoy it all the more.

    • @fp7026
      @fp7026 Před 4 lety +1

      JAZZ MAN Context is key.
      Ken is legendary in the model railway scene and his EM Gauge layout "Tyling Branch" back in the 1950's, which is mentioned in this video, was truly breaking grounds. He and many other modellers; Roye England, Alan Downes, Cyril Freezer, John Ahern, the Rev. Peter Denny, among many others who are too numerous to count, were stalwarts in the field of railway modelling and were the ones who had to develop techniques that didn't exist at the time, all sadly now passed away. It's too easy now to say that their layouts are not realistic, and by today's standards they aren't… but if it wasn't for them the hobby wouldn't be where it is today. These great pioneering modellers have mostly all published great books over the decades, imparting all their experience and knowledge, and their writings are truly invaluable resources for new-comers into the hobby.
      Railway modelling has become too commercial now in my opinion, and there is now little true modelling involved. When I worked in a model shop too often would I see adults buying Hornby train sets that were aimed at children, ready-made trees etc. on a whim with absolutely no idea what they were doing. It's fine for an instant fix, if you just want to play with a train and watch it go around in circles, but these are the sort of people who get bored and give up after a few months.
      To truly embrace the hobby one must learn the history of the hobby, the history of real railways, research, choosing a prototype and learning modelling techniques without relying on commercial products.
      In summary, some modern layouts might look objectively more realistic, but they feature more commercially made, off the shelf products; whereas Ken built EVERYTHING (even the locomotives) in this video from scratch.
      In that context, Ken’s “Kendale” layout is truly very impressive indeed.
      Again, context is key.
