  • Growing anemones are one of the first crops we start on the flower farm in the fall. I cant believe it really, its actually time! I'm taking you along as we start our anemones from package to planting in our starting trays. In just a few short weeks this beautiful flower will be ready to plant in the new raised beds. The girls and I head to the woods for a peaceful escape gathering fern and moss for the market. I'm sharing my thoughts on why we built the raised beds and my hands and scaling the farm back.

Beth - I’m almost 55 and 50 hit me hard… I gained 20 lbs in 3 months and was in pain. 😉 I’m FINALLY on track with my diet and exercise. I built my first garden at 51 and the entire garden is made up of raised beds. Thank you for sharing with us! 🌻

Not necessarily bumps at 50, but a hormone shift. Nothing more nothing less. This is Something you can balance by eating a whole food plant base nutrition or BHRT, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. One of Those 2 options will make all the difference. I chose plant base nutrition and a daily exercise program and my autoimmune disease, Hashimotos, and rheumatoid arthritis have all ceased to exist!! We own a compound pharmacy and we specialized in BHRT. I wish you good health and continued success!! Love your channel!!!

I once thought growing cut flowers would be part of my retirement. Now I am flower farming vicariously through you because of physical infirmities. I feel your pain! At 71, physical therapy and muscle strengthening is a must for me, but I couldn’t get up in the morning without Celebrex. I love your content snd hope you find the strength to continue.

We love you Beth. It takes alot of strength and courage to share such personal struggles but like you said in the beginning of the video. We ARE your family and we ARE your friends. I want our community to be part of your support group...and I think we are. ❤ You are amazing. You have the sweetest, kindest soul and you are so mothering for me. I lost my Mom 4 years ago 😢 but when I watch your videos I feel comforted by you. I really do. You are my TV Mom even though I'm 54 and older than you! Lol. Have you spoke to your Dr about Menopause? I'm post menopausal and so much changes. Maybe discuss HRT with your Dr. I didn't know much about it but I am educating myself. Mother Nature never intended for women to live past around age 47. Lol. It's pretty miserable without estrogen. Anyway. Sorry this is so long. Love you!!!!

Oh goodness Beth, I understand completely the feeling of not being able to do the simplest of things. I fell from a twenty foot ladder a couple of years ago, and cut my right ankle just about off, after surgery my foot still remains very sore most of the time. I remember the helpless feeling when my children had to take care of me for a few weeks. I'm 66 and I still have a large rose garden that I tend all by myself, with a few cut flowers to just share with others and to take to my work place. I pray you get some relief soon.

Beth - Thank you for sharing your story. It hit me last March when I turned 70 - the same month! I thought, "Those insurance actuaries really know what they're talking about!" Then the physical decline - joints, eyes, balance, etc. - started to affect my mental health, and I found myself in bed with depression for several weeks until I figured out what was going on. Something - Someone - whispered in my ear, "This is not normal. This is what depression looks like." That was when I had a long talk with my son, who is also a physician. He asked me if I were feeling sad. I sat and determined what I was really feeling; and I shared with him that it was profound disappointment that I was feeling. I was disappointed that things were changing so fast with my body. To make a long discussion shorter, he asked me if I would consider therapy. I said no. He asked if I would consider an antidepressant. I said absolutely not. So then he said, "You only have one other option." That's when he suggested that I get back to my exercise routine, which has been walking usually an hour or so a day. (I also pray and meditate while I walk.) I took his advice, and started gradually. That first day, I only walked 5 minutes. Just 5 short minutes. (Now I am up to about 35 minutes.) With the walking, the depression lifted very quickly. It was amazing. Hearing you share your personal story was uplifting for me, and I am sure it is for others who watch and listen to you. For all of us, I want to just say, "Thank you. You are an inspiration."

I know you still have hard days, moments that you want to crawl back into your bed and tuck yourself away, but bravo for doing the hard thing by getting up and going for that walk, it's the best therapy for sure. I'm praying you keep finding that stingth, my friend.

Beth you have this great joy, in spite of your struggles! I’m so proud of you and what you have accomplished! Immune diseases rage when you get heavy and down hearted, so do the things that bring you joy! I was 50 when I discovered that I had PBC. Now I’m in the final stage. My bones went osteoporosis and osteoarthritis and I didn’t help anything when I fell and broke my both wrists. My right wrist didn’t set right and then I fell on the basement stairs and fractured my T4 - T11. I am able to walk and I have waist high garden beds. So I am so grateful that I can still garden. I am getting a hypoallergenic puppy in 3 weeks, around the time of my 71st birthday, to keep me company during the long hard winter. I’m allergic to the cold. So I stay indoors for the winter. I lost my 13 year old puppy last May and I was broken hearted! ❤ It affected my health too. But now I am excited and happy and looking forward to all the snuggles and companionship. I want to pick out a really nice name but I’m stumped so far. 😂❤ Long story, sorry Beth. I don’t tell it much because I don’t want people to feel sorry for me. ❤ God bless you!

Big hugs! Thank you for sharing. I've hit similar walls with hygiene, which is one of the big reasons I retired. My hands and body couldn't take the abuse any longer & the day to day stresses were too much. The farm work is still hard & I have my limits and when I hit a wall I know I need to make changes. But there's just something glorious about farm work, especially flower farming. Cheers to worker smarter & being kind to our bodies!

  • @sandyoklahomatransient8557

Hello Beth, You have a beautiful flower farm. Like you, I realized I'm dealing with pain from inflammation, and also thyroid with a mix of hormone issues. I've fixed rhe thyroid problems, and I'm dealing slowly after more research with the inflammation and hormones (diet, exercise, meditation). I have a garden, and realized I'm just getting to old (61 years) to continue crawling around on the ground. My husband, and I built garden boxes just below waist high. They're 5 x 10 each, and this had made a difference on my body. I'm not crawling on the ground any more. I absolutely love them. I plant some flowers in between vegetables, and fruit. My goal this next season, plant a lot more flowers. Flowers bring me joy, and bring in more pollinators.
It's nice to find your blog! Life is good, blessings to you.

Hi Beth! This year I turned 66. I do remember the year I turned 50 and thought what was happening to my body and mind. Of course I was getting older. I also have a couple of autoimmune diseases and I have had to make some changes in my life. I also put raised beds in only to help me with my outdoor dreams. This past Tuesday I had a total knee replacement on my left knee. Five years ago I had to have the right knee replaced. The day after my surgery the physician's assistant came and saw me and told me that my bones were really good. He said that was better for the joint replacement. They didn't have to cement the joint in, but was relying on bone growth to hold the joint in. Continue those weight bearing exercises, you will only benefit from them! I'm waiting for my daughter to stop by. The last time I was in my garden was Monday and I desperately need to get out in it!!! So I have a walker to use temporarily, but I will be retiring at the end of this year and then the work I really desire to do will begin! Loving the anemones...better get some ordered!

Turning 50 this year and while it is a blessing...😂! I'm in a colder area of WA state but will be overwintering some of my anemones with heavy mulch to see if they make it! I'm also wondering if any will grow from seeds . Have you had any pop up in parts where they weren't planted? I'll admit I wasn't a huge fan of the red ones (mine had white mixed in) but never grouped them together as straight bunches. Love your videos and watching your family farm❤

I haven't grown from seed, I just pull up the crom when the foliage has died down and let dry, cut top off of foliage and store over summer in cooler. Fall, we pull out and repeat. You should be ok with leaving, we have just fond we have loss and short flowers if we do.

I wish you well on your journey with RA. My husband was diagnosed with that when we were 34. I do think that diet alone won't be enough to control this autoimmune disease. It will cause damage to the joints and organs if you are not taking the meds to control the inflammation. I think farming and working so physically hard as you already do is exercise enough. Not sure the gym is necessary for your stressed joints. Please know that I am sending this message to you with all the best intentions. We are now 49 and have learned more about this disease in our 15 years of dealing with its challenges.

I am so sorry about your diagnosis. I know how hard it is to have to give up the things you love. I have injuries that slow me down a lot. Everything just takes 3 time as long to do if you can do them at all. May I ask you a question about anemone and ranunculus? I am trying to get the hang of growing them. I was wondering what time you would start soaking them for planting if you wanted them to be blooming for mothers day week? I was also wondering were you are located and what growing zone you are in so I can try to adjust for my area. I live in southern Illinois zone 6. Thank you for all of your videos. They are definitely an inspiration for me. One more question please. I was wondering how many anemone/ranunculus you plant at a time. I am small but would like to have a good amount to harvest for at least 30 bouquets a week.

Hello garden friend, I've always been flexible with my farm and work I do. It makes it easy to make changes as they come up. On planting for Mothers Day is, say, start some now and some in January a second sowing. I'm zone 8B. we start anemones in August, and then every month, I start a few more ranunculus and anemones to keep buds going. On numbers, I'd say plant a minimum of 50 to 75 depending on how much room and how many stems you want in each bouquet. If you can get 100 anemones and 100 ranunculus, you will have a little extra

If you can fix it with diet alone then that's awesome, but do NOT feel like you're less than for needing a medication for a condition you have. I mean as far as anything addictive, I definitely suggest staying away from because a we've all seen, it just ruins peoples lives, & turns people into totally different people, etc. but yea there is nothing wrong with needing a medication... just like when women give birth- some people act as if if you are less of a woman if you get an epidural or something.. like no! There's nothing wrong with that!
