Shoplifting Duo Caught With Shoplifting Device in Millburn Township, NJ

- On July 17th, 2023, Officers of the Millburn Township Police Department (NJ) responded to the Burberry store in the Short Hills Mall for a report of a shoplifting that had just occurred. The store reported that two Black females had shoplifted merchandise and left the store without paying.
Upon the arrival of officers, staff directed them to the Louis Vuitton store where they believed the two females to be currently located. After pointing both females out to officers, contact was made, and an investigation was conducted. Officer found via security footage that one female, Shantia, had concealed a shirt and bathing suit bottoms on her person (valued at $1,090 combined). Upon seeing police while in Louis Vuitton, Shantia had ditched the items behind other merchandise offered for sale. Also located with that merchandise was a Louis Vuitton belt valued at $690. Shantia was arrested and taken to police headquarters for processing.
Police then investigated if there was sufficient evidence to charge her with shoplifting from Louis Vuitton which depended on if she had concealed the belt prior to placing it back on the shelf (which was found). While navigating that, police also worked to determine the involvement of the second detained female. They found that while the female had “distracted” a Burberry employee at the time Shantia concealed merchandise, no charges would be filed at the time of the investigation. She was later released after notification to her probation officer was made due to police contact having been made.
While at police headquarters, a search of the patrol vehicle Shantia was transported in was conducted and officers found a magnetic security tag remover. Shantia later confirmed the item to be hers and that she uses it for a “boutique” she owns in Maryland. Shantia was charged with two counts of shoplifting (Burberry and Louis Vuitton), possession of an anti-shoplifting or inventory control device, and hindering apprehension (for giving false information to a law enforcement officer). She was released pending a court date.

FYI folks- When you enter a store to shoplift, and you bring a tool to help you like this lady did, the police or DA can charge you with burglary too, not just shoplifting. This is because it demonstrates that you “entered the premise with the intent to commit a crime.”
As loss prevention I can confirm this. I had a shoplifter who was charged for burglary because of the bags they used to conceal.
It’s better they don’t know so they get the highest amount of punishment.

Short Hills mall is an high end retail mall in Northern NJ. Walking into those stores looking like you were going to 7-11 will definitely get you looked at twice.

The suspect's phone should NOT have been given to the other party. It should have been seized as evidence. It is probably a treasure trove of information regarding other possible nefarious enterprises.

As I look back on my own life, I remember when I used to steal from everywhere, I am so glad that I have changed my life around. Stealing is no way to get the things you need.
