Thinking of moving to NY in the next year or two, and I think it'd be awesome if you did a "Moving to NY tips" kind of video. Maybe mention some of the locations and prices you looked up, what some of the biggest hurdles were, etc. Anyone else? Thumbs up so Tess can see this if you'd be interested!

Hey! I've been living in NYC for my entire life and I just wanted to give you a few tips if you're planning to move to NYC.
1. Renting in Manhattan is really expensive. Try renting in the other boroughs (i.e. Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx. you can also rent in Staten island but you'll have to take a ferry to the city so that's incredibly inconvenient)
2. Normal rent outside the city can range anywhere from 1500 (for something like a studio) to 3,500/4000 for a 3 bedroom. I suggest getting a roommate!
3. Get ready for things to be quite expensive. A gallon of milk here is on average $4.50-$5 in the supermarket.
4. Get some comfortable shoes. Best mode of transportation is by subway and your own two feet!
5. Think vertically! If you need some extra storage, get some shelves and start stacking.

Yes Reyon is so Right. I also live in NYC and live outside of manhattan and its still expensive. rent is not lower than 1400 even outside of manhattan. The grocery stores is expensive everything here is expensive. Its dirty alot of places loud everywhere, people are constantly fighting on the subways. But its a good place to visit I think. Also another tip is your credit score needs to be at least 750 which no one will ever say. I wish someone would of told me that and you have to make 3x the rent if you dont have a guarantor then guess what you need to pay at least 3 months in advance. Its crazy I had none of that and had to pay $6000 just to move in. Once my lease is done I am out of NYC and live in a cheaper state. Good Luck and make sure you save save save and that your credit score is high and that you make good income or at least have a combined income a spouse or family member. To do it alone is very difficult and I dont recommend living in NYC to nobody unless youre a doctor or a lawyer. Good luck and I am counting the months till I am out of here.

Ok for everybody who got inspired by this video & wanting to move to NYC here is the financial breakdown, so the rent for her apartment is probably $3500 /month (1.5 bedrooms) if not more, I guess she lives in a good neighborhood in Brooklyn so I'm not surprised if it's $3900/ month. This is a new building, it mostly likely has doorman, elevators, & THAT WASHER DRYER IN UNIT that's ROYALTY!! So your yearly income has to be at least 40 times the monthly rent to qualify, plus good-excellent credit score, you do the math, that's $160K/ year give or take. If you yourself don't have enough income, your parents can be your financial guarantors , if they make that much. You can get roommates if your combined income reaches the requirement. There is a huge price to pay ( literally) to live in a building like this in NYC. I just moved out a building like this after 2 years, i paid $3000 for a 1 bedroom. If your dream is to move here be prepared ! especially financially, hope this info helps
beautiful apartment but to anyone watching this who has never lived in new york or know anything about it a place like this is INCREDIBLY unreasonable for most people... even outside manhattan in maybe brooklyn or queens a place like this is minimum $4,000 a month.... if you are watching this and expecting a place like this when you move to new york u better be ready for a wake up call!

I feel like a lot of people who aren't familiar with NYC don't realize how expensive this apartment must be. It's gigantic for starters and I believe in Dumbo (?) or near it. Really jealous of you Tess, definitely an inspiration and motivation for me. I want to be able to live in something similar by my mid/late twenties! #goals

Guys save your money. its very very expensive In NYC even just to eat here the taxes the apartment everything. And you need to make good income plus have a good credit score.

I think i remember she mentioned for her style videos, she gives some of the clothes away, returns them to the stores & just keeps the ones she loves. Otherwise her closet would explode i guess :)

I JUST LOVE HOW Tess is very humble about everything that she has and shows on her videos whether is clothing or decor items around her house I just love how she shows it with such passion and simplicity without making it seem that she is showing it off ! I do watch other you tubers and not sure if its the way they are but it just seems like they want to get paid to show off their expansive things or expansive trips But TESS GURL YOU IS REALL !!! A little tip I use to keep my stovetop clean is to put aluminium foil down underneath the metal plates, and that way when things spill and it starts to get grubby, I just replace the foil covering! great video x

just an fyi... it's not good to put your spices near heat aka the stove. they can lose their freshness

...it's true - we all learn the hard way, I did, too - when I kept mine in a cabinet over the stove. Of course, we all don't have pantries the size of Martha Stewart's to categorize and alpha them - all in pretty large mason jars, ha ha...however, I have done mine in those little dollar store candle jars - the ones that have rubber suction inside the cover...i cleaned out the jars and now have spices in them on one of those narrow ledge/photo wall shelves - across from my stove/oven location...looks pretty cute, even with chalk labels from Hobby Lobby/Michael's...a easy DIY, sooo, save those empty little jars :)
Couldn't get over the makeup right above the toilet, I don't even keep my toothbrush near my toilet! That bacteria- nooooo no for the skin and eyes 👀

I was thinking the same thing, mostly just the exposed makeup brushes above the toilet made me cringe. But I suppose as long as you keep the toilet seat closed, like she has it, it should be too bad.

I've watched a lot of apt tours and I cringe every time I see girls keep their makeup on the bathroom sink near the toilet. I keep my makeup in my room and even my toothbrush.
The key is to keep the lid shut when you flush.

Are apartments in NYC really expensive (apartments in the city itself, like downtown-ish), and do you do need a good salary to afford to live in NYC?
yes, NYC is the second most expensive city to live in after DC
Yes its crazy expensive even outside of manhattan it doesnt matter whichever borough you live in its still expensive no matter what neighborhood it is. The hood or not nothing is below $1400 and then to get groceries is also expensive. So you need a good salary 3x the rent and a high high credit score if not you will need to pay 3 months to move in so if the rent is 1500 x3 its crazy. And combine that with the smell the noise and people who are so rude on the subways and the constant fighting on the subways.

Yes exactly, I am from Miami and the rent is way cheaper I just didnt like the heat and humidity however I'll be moving to Michigan soon where the rent is also cheaper and change of seasons. The stress level in NYC is horrible just stepping outside there is drama. People shouting across the streets, people always asking you for money and this is in Manhattan in time square so it doesnt matter what neighborhood. And all that for $3000 per month for a tiny little box apartment. Its so not worth it. But thats just my opinion. :/

Wow I love everything about your apartment from how you designed it with interesting pieces especially the window mirror was brilliant lol. It has this hipster, somewhat southwestern feel to it. I also thought putting the laundry and dryer machine in a closet was pretty damn neat. Seems like a comfortable place!

for NYC, this is really nice for a one bedroom apartment plus the office- really it's a 2 bedroom... and they have a washer and dryer!!! Definitely a nice, doorman building.
Depending on the area, this is probably about 3000 a month...
