- Today we are walking through Novo Mercado/New Market, Margao, Salcette, South Goa. After Margao town expanded and the Old Market and Old Municipality in front of Holy Spirit Church became too small to meet the needs of citizens, the Novo Mercado, or 'New Market', was established near the Capela de Batalhao (Battalion chapel), which today is Our Lady of Grace Church. New Market was opened on December 5, 1889, 16 years before the new Municipal Council building next door was built.
'Margao Market' refers to an area encompassing New Market, its adjacent shop-lined lanes and shopping roads extending all the way from Comba in the west through Pajifond, Malbhat and Aquem in the east. Altogether, this is Goa's largest commercial centre in its second largest city, after Vasco. This video covers the New Market building itself and the immediately adjacent lanes. Shops in Pajifond, Malbhat, Old Station Road, Aquem, and so on, will be covered in separate videos in future.
All Goans comes to New Market at some point in their lives. It has everything you need and plenty that you don't need. It is one place where we always seem to end up spending more than we planned.
There are many entries to New Market and where you enter depends on where you have work. Today, we are beginning and ending at the Margao Municipal Council.
Note that as New Market is a completely covered indoor market, there is limited lighting for video recording inside the market. Also, the electricity went off during shooting. Will cover New Market inside further again sometime.
People come to Margao's New Market for all purposes and occasions, be it for everyday household goods and professional equipments or special occasions from festivals to weddings. Here, you can buy jewellery, spectacles, sunglasses, watches, casual clothes, wedding wear, shoes, cashewnuts, fireworks, decorations and festival items for all religions, gift paper, frames, baskets, household linen - sheets, curtains, towels, etc - dress material for school uniforms, gents suits, bridal material, bridalwear, wedding gowns, porcelain items, artificial flowers, imported decorations, curios, religious artefacts, I ❤️ Goa t shirts, religious picture frames, medicines, baked items, sweets, kazarache bol, guava cheese, pinagr, dodol, bebinca, nankatai biscuits, Goan palm jaggery and sugarcane jaggery, vinegar, pickles, chepnim, miscut, parra, masalas, sweets, spices, party items, imported pantry items - chocolates, dry fruit, cheese, jam, cereal, etc - ready masalas, Margao choriz, Goa sausages, pork meat, toddy vinegar, chudo (bangles) market, tarpaulins, plastic sheets, non-branded shoes and footwear, gas stove and cylinder repair, florist, wedding car decorations, sports shop, football t-shirts, cycles.. the list is endless!

Yes, as the video says, it’s more than 120 years old. But it’s name of ‘Novo Mercado’ or New Market is because it came up much after Old Market near Holy Spirit church and the sessions court
