- It's Pentax Week! To celebrate, Chris and Jordan went on a road trip through the Rocky Mountains with the new(ish) Pentax DA* 11-18mm F2.8. How does the final lens in Pentax's APSC 'Trinity' hold up? Will Jordan's singing cause Chris to crash the car? Are mountains pretty? All these questions will be answered.

You forgot to mention the groove at the front end for a heating element. Very useful to avoid fogging up. That's the kind of detail Pentax pays attention to.
Thanks so much for giving Pentax some airtime! I recently switched because I needed more reliable autofocus on the jobs I have been doing, but I love everything about the Pentax system and have been shooting with it for over 10 years and it's nice whenever I see them get some attention. It's the most underrated brand in photography and that's a shame.
Cool to see you guys doing some PENTAX stuff!!!!!!!!!! :-)
Thanks Thomas! Yah we certainly love their stuff, it's just so few and far between nowadays.
Thank you for doing Pentax week!
Happy to see them reviewing a Pentax product, and even bringing themselves to noting some positives. I don't know, however, what they did with the focussing, or whether they were sent a bad copy of the lens, but lack of corner sharpness hasn't been a significant complaint by actual users of this lens. Actually, it's a fairly-priced killer lens, fully deserving of its "star" designation (which has been reserved to Pentax pro-grade lenses), and not just some sad option that Pentaxians are somehow stuck with.
There is a bias and you just have to deal with it,or just do not believe them..If I say something enough times,I might start to believe it AND convince others..
I'm a simple man... I see Pentax, I click like!
yeah, winter is season of Pentax! I love that!
These video releases come perfectly at 8am in the U.K. - This makes me happy :)
10am Finland 🤗
I love Pentax!!
Pentax KS2, pentax K70, pentax K3, Pentax K1, Pentax 645Z, n pentax 2020
My very first SLR is an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic II. Still remember it well and always have a soft spot for them. Wonder how many people still know about their rich history.
That was my first camera, but I was only able to use it for a few months... transferred to a Olympus OM-2 rig for a while after the Spot's mirror mechanism broke down. I should have saved the 50mm 1.4 lens when I sold the camera in "for parts" condition.
Pentax is just some sort of Linux in photography. :-)
@@velixir Absolutely sure, but percentage of Linux desktop distributions in use is about the same as for Pentax DSLR base.
Their menus look like a linux console...
You're just making Pentax sound badass.
@@GinoFoto Well, I use Linux, now that M$ ended the support for windows7 last week. Have to say the photo and video editing software is not quite up there with windows software but that said it is usable.
@@janijtube I've been using Linux since the mid 1990s, alongside Windows and sometimes Mac/OS X. You're partly right about the editing software, but it's possible to use things professionally with a little tweaking.
I know it's a brutal commercial environment out there, and we are bound to see some famous names disappearing soon, but we should be sad about it. It shocks me to see how gleeful some CZcamsrs are about the impending collapse of, say, Olympus and Pentax, and the woes of Nikon. Not you guys, of course. We are better off with diversity and acknowledging the history behind these companies. I don't want my choice of cameras to boil down to Canon, Fuji, and Sony. Don't let it happen!
It will be sad to lose Pentax, Olympus parent company are a giant, bigger than Nikon, so they could potentially sustain themselves, and M4/3 is a great format on a spectacular mount that offers great light gathering and ample space for OIS. As a Nikon Z shooter i do worry, their Z cameras have great hardware, particularly for 1st gen. and the 1.8 lenses don't skimp out just because they're not faster, but they just haven't caught on.
I really love the location. Rocky mountains. So beautiful
I will f**king crash to make you stop 🤣🤣
Say what you want but these Pentax black and white jpg's look great
Wow........ Its Pentax !!!!!
Looks good but for the corners. Damn, Daniel! :/
Also Thumbs up for Pentax Week! Awesome idea!
It's quite rare that I like a video twenty seconds in, but today I made an exception.
Damn my first dlsr was a Pentax I miss it
*PENTAX IS NUMBER 1*
Thank you A hot cup of Coffee and You Guys a Great start to the Morning ! 👍👍
This week is going to be a good week!! :)
Good respectful review of a lens I just purchased and am very pleased to own & use.
Wahoo its Pentax week
Yay Pentax Yay! See it is possible to have a happy Pentaxian :D
Glad to see some Pentax love.
Did you guys forget to disengage shake reduction before mounting the K-70 camera with the 11-18mm f/2.8 zoom on a tripod to make a long exposure? Just wondering if that's why you got a slight blur on your landscape shots...
old Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 is still out there in shop for clearance sale, but of course, that sigma is old and maybe not on the modern lens level. other slower option is old sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, old sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6, old tamron 10-24mm f3.5-4.5 and old pentax 12-24mm f4; other modern but manual focus option is samyang 10mm f2.8, laowa 12mm f2.8 (FF), irix 11mm f4 (FF); just for your info
You are old :D Sig 10-20/3.5 and 8-16 are latest versions with modern optics and HSM.
I mean comparing to the Arts and Sports series
I get great results using K3 and the sigma 10-20 f3.5. It’s a great combination.
FUCK YES PENTAX WEEK FUCK YEAH!!!
Pentax. The Zune of DSLRs. Only the ones that got it can appreciate it
Really hoping they make a successor to their 645z one day.
Reading some of the posts, who would believe we share one common interest: Photography. It seems more as if some people get a kick out of brand bashing no matter if it's SoCaNikon/Fuji/Pentax or whatever, probably without having any hands on experience.
So sad.
Kudos to Chris and Jordan!
I always thought a Pentax DSLR would be a the perfect camera to take with fishing. Especially out of a kayak or canoe.
I miss my Pentax set-up. My Sony A6300 has a lot more features, but it lacks charm that the Pentax had.
I've still got my Pentax film and DSLR bodies. No way am I selling my Pentax stash if I can help it! Also own the a6300, and an Olympus OM-D E-M10 III. The Oly is better functionally IMHO vs the a6300 (awesome touchscreen and small, yet bright lenses); the a6300 is a bit better in low light and action shots.
@@AlexRamosDrTaz I just sold my Sony setup and moved back to the Ricoh griii, so I use that with my k1000!
Amazing look from the S1H 💪 and good singing too 😄
Here's the skinny...
Pentax users are interested in RESULTS,anytime, anywhere, and the Pentax system is totally solid. There's no NEED to simply make new gear just because some folks want to act like bored, silly children, who need new toys. It;s INTELLIGENT design for simplicity, and quality, instead of hype, lies, and trash. We do not feel the need to 'compare' with brands,'switch',and whine about who is doing what. Now,some of us know,if you are shooting APS-C and do not have the glass you want ,you can always use a K Mount full frame lens, and shoot, with no problems. The other option, which I have,is to have a Pentax K1 Mk2,and shoot in the optional crop mode,at 15MP.That's not a problem,it's just something CZcamsrs care to not admit or simply do not know about. Here's some major differences with Pentax, and if it dont apply, let it fly,or get upset and that's too damn bad...
Pentax...We do not worry about format hype, because we already know it has NOTHING to do with output. We know our knowledge, experience, and skills matter,no exceptions,no excuses....
Pentax...We do not have to worry about 50 variations of the same model, nor do we have to worry about our cameras being crippled. That means Pentax might creep forward, yet never backwards. The Ki mk2 did not lose a card slot, didnt not come with worse AF,and Pentax cameras do not need firmware to fix mistakes.
Pentax....We do not have to worry about 17+ recent recalls,4 for one camera model,etc,etc..
Pentax....Some of the best IBIS,best bodies,best functionality,best customization in the world...period...
Pentax...NEVER afraid of snow, rain, cold, heat, and the everyday bumps and bruises of the field.
Pentax..NOT the whiny, crybaby,'it's too heavy,it's too big' crew.Evidently, either we are healthier, stronger, and have more endurance,or we simply do not care about being a wimp. It's a damn camera, not carrying around an Olympic barbell set.
Thanks for the review, and I will take a peek at the lens....
Pentax have stepped backwards in one area - that wonderful industry-leading sensor based IBIS, was on in Video on the K-5, but disabled after then - the K-01 (arguably Pentax's 'video' model - I have two,..) would have outsold the Canon 5D2 in video sales if it had retained the IBIS, and had a data rate about 2.5 times higher then what it was released with :(
@@PiDsPagePrototypes
That does not mean they stepped backwards.Pentax evidently is nit trying to impress anyone with features, just 'bang for the buck' and quality. You are just stuck in the typical 'us against them' mentality.Even Sony does not say ' my tv/cassette player/camera/clock radio is better than yours',they make it known their products are worth the money.
Certain products stand by themselves because they exude quality which is why people use Fuji/Leica,and other brands that might not be as 'popular'.Popular and comparisons end up being for small minds and for those who think they have something to prove. It's just like people, who always feel the need to compare themselves to others, instead of being the greatest individual they can be.Plus,i have never heard of Pentax giving video a second thought, just image quality of stills.
@@michaels8597 Not quite - the feature of IBIS in video in the K-5, was switched off by choice, with the claim that people could hear the sensor moving during video recording.
We Pentaxian Video Shooters (we're rare, we know this,..) have been asking for it to return on every model since, but they refuse to do it, because a very vocal group of "I hate video" people keep giving negative feedback.
@@PiDsPagePrototypes
You're just one huge ball of OPINION,and that's sooooooooooo tiring and delusional. You have not a shred of proof that Pentax 'refused to do it',because of what ';people' wrote. You're trying to tell me that an actual company is worrying about some crybaby CZcamsrs,so they will not become video oriented???
Fuji might get 100 people writing on CZcams, saying they want their GFX medium format models to have 4k@60,and by your 'logic',if they don't do it,they are 'refusing' the public.Thousands of Canon shooters have been asking them not to cripple their cameras, yet they not only still do it,they made it even worse, taking away a card slot,no IBIS,and another crop.
Companies have a direction,a focus,a plan, and most of them which are successful,do professional research, not just trolling around on CZcams. Here's a solution though..
If you do not like it,and you are so adept, then why don't YOU take over that task at Pentax and make it happen?????In the meantime,if I want something like great video,I will get a Panasonic S1,a Sony, etc, etc, and continue to use my Pentax for stills work..
@@michaels8597 Stop the rudeness, and go read the last 8 years worth of posts over on the Pentax Forum.
Good music and shots of the climbers
I took a Pentax K-1 with 28-105 along with a Canon 6D with 24-70L out the last couple of Summers in CO and Yellowstone. I preferred the Landscapes from the Pentax Combo, hands down every time, and it wasn't just the extra resolution either. In fact, I'm not upgrading to the K-1 Mk II either, no need to. I prefer the Canon combo for people pictures/ portraits only. Both are sharp otherwise, but the files from the K-1 hold up better when processing.
Pentax's RAW output is terrific, but so are the JPEGs, especially in the newer bodies.
I love the wheezy party sound you guys put in every time you mention Pentax Week!
DPReview. I note that Chris has decided on a new unit of weight for lenses. It's the NOCT. Very amusing.
Sweet shot at 2:29 - I love a nice vertically composed landscape shot, and the sun popped out from behind the gloom at the right time.
Please do PENTAX *YEAR!*
that was 1960

Neat looking camera. Looks more modern than the latest DSLR's from Canikon.
LexTNeville pentax dslrs always looks better than CaNikon dslrs
I really wish you would make an unsung cameras of yesteryear episode on the konica minolta 7 digital
You mean the Konica Minolta Maxxum (Dynax) 7D? Man, I loved that camera. The CCD sensor threw out some great, sharp images with beautiful colours. Minolta were terrible at naming cameras though ;)
@@AndrewSowerby yes, that one
Looks like a lovely lens! Idk should I adapt some pentax lenses into my sony system. Need to take a better look on the lenses that has nice manual focus!
Nice to see some new reviews concerning pentax gear :)
Basing on samples provided, it seems like a bad copy of lens. I suppose it's decentered. I saw much sharper sample shots, especially wide open.
I often wonder why so many reviewers get so many bad copies of Pentax glass?!!! By the way I shoot with a Pentax K3.
finally, thank you for new pentax stuff
The main problem of this lens is tamropentax 15-30 2.8 that costs now the same money. And K-1 is also not so expensive. Yes, it is without front filter screw, it is havier, bigger.... But this is FF lens with even wider zoom range and it can do sharp photos when stop down.
Guys I recently discovered you...(sorry I am late 👍) really enjoy your channel!
We are glad to have you!!! Thanks for watching!
I liked this just for reading the description 😂😂😂
If I still had Pentax APSC I would buy it. So much better than other third party lenses. :-)
3:50 isn't that the exact same cabin Gavin Hardcastle and Adam Gibbs have photographed? From almost the same spot too.
EVERYBODY has photographed from that spot. Including myself. It's cliche but pretty.
Funny thing. I always wanted to use pentax. Their rugged bodies are really interesting to me. I like the lenses and bodies designs.
But I live in Brazil. I only found 1 pentax digital cam to this day! I currently use sony a-mount and there is plenty lenses of this mount here, but nothing on pentax.
Nice B&W photos Chris and great video - as always-- Jordán. I like the lens BTW
BTW did you fine tune your lens to the camera mine is definitely sharper than my DA 12-24
OMFG! Forget looking for hen's teeth, we have here a PENTAX review! Really though, I don't have the same issues with corners on that lens. Maybe because I was shooting at infinity? Also on the lack of options, I think it's the only first-party wide 2.8 or weather-sealed lens for APSC DSLRs of any brand, so if you want that, your only option seems to be PENTAX.
Albert Siegel there is also the Fujifilm 8-16mm f2.8, Designed for the Fuji APSC range :)
@@matthewroome3815, I'm aware, but I'm talking about DSLRs. In mirrorless that Fuji is the only such option.
Albert Siegel Aha yeah! I should have read your comment more closely xD
With the exception of using a full frame lens on an APSC DSLR, you may be right!
sony a-mount has the 16-50 f2.8 not as wide as, but it's for DSLR and DSLT and it's fast and weather sealed
I sold my Pentax gear and switched to Olympus. The Pentax just wasn't as sharp in my unscientific tests.
Great job on those road trip songs Jordan. Well played lol
I like how Jordan colorgraded Chris' nose
Lovely start to the week :)
unsung cameras of yesteryear episode please
Yahya Lemnouar agreed start with the ME Super 🤪🤩
It looks very much like the oldie -
golden-ring Tamron design.
Oh you teases! I was hoping to see some sweet wide angle astrophotography!
YEAH FINALLY SOME PENTAX. dudes, got a K3, best zoom? Sigma 17-55 constant 2.8. perfect, none of the issues with 11-18. under $300. this shot with S1H video? BEAUTIFUL. Marty Sender You Tube
Appreciate you reviewing that lens, although I really expected to see coma levels. Too bad the weather wasn’t the best for that. Love my PEntax even over my a7iii
“About a third of a Noct...”
yikes,who bought that???$8000???????If I paid $8000 for a lens,i would be out 14 hours a day trying to make that money back...please...
Awesome intro! Just hilarious. Thank you for a much needed laugh early in the morning.
Thanks for the Edwin Starr shout out!!
audio's really good in this video
This is an excellent pro lens and the camera too!
Cheers from 1997
Chris, I’m glad to see the tan pants back in the rotation. I was honestly getting worried.
LOL I had to check the date of the video to make sure I wasn't watching a throwback segment... it's nice to see you guys give a shoutout to the retirement community though
Jordan might turn into a Yogi after posing through 2020. Hopefully he doesn't give up camera reviewing for it. I still get the occasional comment on my old Pentax videos. Most of them are negative and angry due to my... low... production values back in ~2011. ;D An enjoyable reminder of undying Pentaxian enthusiasm.
Chris, you and Jordon should do some travel videos as well. I have been following you two for years. Can you give specific locations of where you were at in the first photo setup? I would love to visit this area. Hey, that is tourism dollars for Canada. LOL
Can you please review the 20-40mm limited? There is not a single proper review of this lens on CZcams
i love the driver passenger...he! is the talent
Ouch... the corners don't get sharp when stopped down? Guess I'll wait for version 2.0. I'll stick to my Sigma 17-50 2.8 for now then (I know, not ultra wide but anyway).
Well soon new APS-C Pentax will come to the market :)
I know, but their FF and MF lines deserve some new bodies too IMO.
Too bad it was overcast and you couldn't show everyone Astrotracer.
Jordan, you were cracking me up! :)
It was worth watching this video just to see the beautiful snow in BC and landscapes...oh and Jordan's singing.
I think your eyes are okay but you might have an issue with your ears. I'd get them checked. 😀
"the lens is beautiful to look at"... Wow, its that of interest today 🤣
I feel bad for Pentax. It's like your old uncle, who drastically wanna to please you with good birthday/christmas gift, and gives you the most unexpected and kind of a useless thing that you didn't want, and you feel bad for not being thankful, because your uncle loves you so much and did his best, but in the same time you know that gift was a bit shitty and uncle used to be a really cool guy back in the 60s, but today he so much boomer, but still is your good old uncle.
that about sums it up,but the people who hang in with RICOtax are old uncles/aunts mostly
Canada is possibly one of the least likely places I would expect to see a Warsteiner beer sign. :D There certainly is a Germanic (under the) influence.
Thank you!
2:46 You can get by without a tripod in those conditions anyway (bright snow and overcast day...still good enough for a handheld shutter speed assuming you have IS). 😊 Seems using or not using a tripod can be somewhat controversial and something people argue about in the forums, but myself...I never use one unless it's a true long exposure shot. I find it just slows me down and causes me to take less photos because I get tired of re-positioning the tripod.
I got nice photos in full white background in Lapland with 18-55 kit lens at aperture of what, 7-9 or something. Fully hand held and perfectly good photos as far as kit lens goes anyway. So im on par with you that during those days, when snow outside but its cloudy and its as cloudy as you cant distinguish between snow and clouds and cant even see horizon, tripot is just dead weight unless going for panoramas, maybe HDR or long exposure.
@@fulldnbboy With my Z7 (which has excellent IBIS), I'm good with speeds down to 1/15th with a 24-70mm lens, but slower than 1/15th is where I would give up and pull out a tripod. Anything 1/30th and above is definitely handheld shooting for me and it works out well.
You are not doing test photos off-hand to inspect optical quality of lens... you just put camera on tripod, use base ISO and then observe.
6.48 glitch in the matrix...
Kinda unfortunate about those resolution figures, even though I'm usually not that concerned about corners. Does it show throughout whole zoom range? Fuji 8-16 has similar problems, but only from 8-11 range.
This is like reviewing a Cellphone for Photography. But better. Lol
Check out the Pentax K1 vs Nikon D850 Vs Canon 5Dsr Vs Sony A7R lll - tinyurl.com/ycc84sfo . Its from dpreview , You will see that the K-1 has better resolution, its actually quite obvious :-). Raw DR: Exposure Latitude Comparison
Still Pentax company having high potential to manufacture all sorts of lenses. Even in the difficult financial situations they are able to produce high quality lenses. Lack of advertisement and promotion is much lesser comparing to other camera companies.
Pentax the Subaru of cameras. Reviewers don't mention useful features they have.
Pentax Week! *party horn*
A whole week of Pentax!? Who hurt you?!
Looks like a Tamron from the 1990's .
Did Chris finally get rid of the ol' Pontiac?
@6:16 did Jordan just pull off a Jeremy Clarkson, leaving price tags on his clothing items?
I will crash your f’n car...😂🤣😂
look like the len suffered field curvature issue that pentax unable to reduce, other brands did better, oh i remember how terrible corner 15mm limited len i used to own
