I sat down with my friend JD Brewer (JD's youtube • APEXISH Studio G Back... ) and asked him questions about his welding career, being self employed, and for advice he would give anyone getting started in a welding career. JD also has a youtube channel called JD Brewer... and he is doing some cool stuff...please give him a follow.
Here are the main questions I asked:
How did you get started welding?
how did you get started in your own welding business?
What is your favorite type of work?
What advice would you give to a young welder in school?
What advice would you give someone starting a welding business?
If you had to start over with nothing and you had a $3000 budget, what would you buy? - Jak na to + styl
Thank you Jody for all the awesome videos you put out! They are the best welding videos on the internet and are so full of information. Thanks for hanging out, It's always a pleasure having you in the shop!
my pleasure JD. thanks for your time and for sharing your experience
Two guys with a wealth of knowledge. Great video dudes.
Chris Dixon thanks buddy!
thanks. its always great to work with JD
When JD says you can put down some serious metal with daul shield he means it. I used to work in a code vessel shop we used it for 75% of the welding.
Thank you for your time J.D. and great interviewing technique Jodie. This is really worth watching for beginner welders or small business startups. 👍
Greg Norris thank you!
As the owner of lots of equipment I weld out of necessity. I run a portable stick welder to repair stuff once a week in the field. Since I stumbled onto your videos my welding has improved so much that it's hard to believe. I have also purchased a 210mp based on what you guys said about it. I'm blown away by this machine. I really appreciate the time you put into this. I tried to call and personally thank you but never came up with a number so here it is. Thank you. Sincerely James Cabral
James Treeman glad you like the 210mp!!
Here's a trick for Jody and others with welders that trip the power when switched on.
I'll bet you switch it on right after plugging it in. Try giving it at least 5 minutes plugged in first. Why this works for me is that the capacitors in the machine charge while it's sitting plugged in, and then that store of power is there to feed the large draw of switching it on.
balisticsquirel I agree
Thanks to you both for putting this one together. I really value the information you take the time to share, and I hope the CZcams thing is rewarding to you both. Cheers!
Great video guys! I just love it when you give advice for beginners, I'm an ol' timer now.... still not an expert. I started by sweeping the shop, I really wanted to learn to weld and get rid of that old broom. I'm retired but still welding as a hobby, I still love it and never regretted it, very interesting trade.👍👍👍
Who else love the internet and the fact these guys post all their knowledge and give invaluable advice. It’s a good time to be alive.
Watching this one again. I’m sure it popped up on my feed for a reason.
Oh to be a fly on the wall in the shops of those two guys. I’m a full time Paramedic trying to teach myself to weld on the side, sponging up as much as I can along the way. Thank you 🙏🙏
Just picked up 2 used welders Craftsman 35/230 stick and a Lincoln Electric mig handy pack just to learn on and to add welding to my woodworking hobby, enjoy watching both of you. Thanks Gary
Great interview. Had tons of information for someone wanting to start their own business and hosted with two guys that possess a ton of knowledge between them. I enjoy seeing videos like this along with the welding videos because it's not always just about welding, it' about business too.
Love your guy's stuff! Its nice to see someone showing how it really is, trying to make a living doing this stuff.
Thanks Jody and JD I really enjoy and appreciate both of your channels. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences.
Scooter Rat Thanks!
Thank you guys so much for this video. I have a square wave right now. But have been looking at the MP210. To start something out of my shop. Thanks guys!!!
Dual shield is one of the best processes there is period everything he says is spot on
What a couple of great guys, love watching the CZcams stuff!
I appreciate the interview, I actually went from hobby time with my Lincoln 140 mig to now having a small start up business. I follow you guys for tips and advice, and this was right on point. I have been saving up for the 210. It is true about passing up work because your not geared for it, but I also have been as JD said as when customers ask can you do this can you do that, lol well I learning every day. So thanks for helping me on my start up...
Henry Sanchez good to hear!
You guys are on the spot about taking what ever jobs is available. This summer I had off for school, so I applied for a structural welding position, and totally failed bc they require testing plates with ceramic backing. I've never done the ceramic backing before and it kicked my butt. So feeling defeated a older classmate had a small fab shop, took me in as a shop helper and aided them welding a aluminum pontoon boat. I ended picking up some good knowledge this summer, introducing to ceramic backing, using the spool gun on the 210mp, Ac tig on aluminum with my AHP 200x, and general shop experience.
Thanks again for the tips.
I'm newly sub to JDs, good stuff!
Natee Pun nice!! Thanks!
Jody, First thanks for all you videos. I contacted you about a tig welder and thanks for the help. I just bought your Stubby Gas Lens kit with the welding fingers and I know it will be great. And thanks for the Bonuses . Keep up the great work!
It's always great to hear what both of you have to say and see what you're working on. I really enjoy and appreciate both of your videos. I even watched your videos when I was in the labor room with my wife last week when we had our second daughter haha. Keep up the great work guys.
Andrew Gensler nice! Congratulations!
You guys are great. Enjoy the podcast & the vids. Learned a lot by watching your channel.
I’m not a young guy at 59 years old but adding welding to my skill set has helped me work through jobs at work.
Really appreciate you knowledge you both share. I actually bought my Miller Multimatic 220 welder and Fireball Mega square after watching videos from both of you.
You two are very cool for doing this, thanks for passing the bread. Keep going fellas
Agreed you can learn a lot in the worst circumstance. I hated welding out bummers for trailers at a place I worked at, but I learned a ton in the process.
Thank you both for taking the time out of your busy schedules to put this video together, lots of editing and arrangement. some of us understand the effort it takes to bring this to us. Please keep up this podcast, CZcams, etc. I appreciate it and I believe there are many welders out there who do to. Thank you again.( lets the sparks fly- whoyaa!)
joseph sebesta thank you!
This video is gold these are some of my favorite videos that you do
Love these videos. So much knowledge being dropped!! Thank you
👌, I love you content and interview!! I love using it also. It's a sure thing and fast weld process. I don't worry about leaks or cracks.
that was outstanding !! both of you guys are so talented and yet so humble and willing to share. I have been fascinated with welding since I was 5 or 6, I watched one of my uncles weld every night after he got off of work as a heavy equipment mechanic... he built a 50 foot steel hull trawler in his back yard. I have been hooked ever since. I started trying to weld in ag class at 15, bought my first Lincoln a/c 225 at 21 got in a tight with a new child and sold it, replaced it a year or so later and she is still kicking ( I am 57 now ) I have welded at every job but have never been a professional welder but in the last couple of years I have bought a tig 200 square wave and a power mig 180 w/ spool gun and have been looking at engine drives for the last month or so. my hope is to do some mobile welding after I retire from my current job in about 5 years. you can bet I will be following your vids.@ JD, don't be surprised if a 62 year old man wanders into your shop in a few years offering to work for free just to learn some layout tricks. thanks to both of you guys for the to the point easy to follow videos, I have learned so much from them and it is very much appreciated.
Dang it guys. I was set on getting the Rebel. Now you have me second guessing and looking at the Lincoln! I'm just a hobby welder running a Hobart 140 and ready to step up. Great video guys. So much good info. Thank you.
GREAT toolbox talk guys am a retired ironworker getting into mig and big for first time and I'm fired up!
That was excellent! Thanks! BTW.....don't forget to buy your consumables from Weldmonger. I did. Great products and service!
I'm an older (52) welder just about to start at my 3rd MIG welding job. The first 2 were very short term, years ago, but with my own non-related business not taking off and growing like I'd hoped, I'm back into welding. If I would have kept at it from the time I got out of welding school in '13, I would have been much better off financially (and more knowledgeable!), but it's good to see how relatively easy it still is to find good-paying work, even at my age and relative inexperience level. Also recently bought a new Multimatic 215, which is a great little machine! Bought a CK TIG torch and footpedal, but still need consumables for it. I'd love to get better at TIG and eventually get into that. Great videos, Jody.
Stumbled across this 4 years later. Still great advice!
Another great video. Thanks for posting.
Great talk! I find this stuff so fascinating. I went to school and make my living as an architectural designer (not licensed). But I've had this little voice in the back of my head for years that keeps telling me that this is the type of work I should be doing.
Awesome!! 👌🏼 mouth shut eyes open!!! Great video boys!
Niall Menzies thanks man!
Great interview, well done to both of you 👍
Love the evo chop saw! I just picked up the Evo380 15", it cuts everthing!
Good Video Guys! Enjoyed the conversation.
As a welding T-shirt printer I love this video.
Great video, very informative. The screen shot in one of your videos has the 2 of you looking like you're related. Keep up the videos.
In your startup listing you neglected to include safety gear, weld hood, gloves, jacket/shirt. Also, gas bottles/fills, whether renting or buying. As a brand-new welder I purchased a used Lincoln 180 Dual for $750. It looked absolutely new, pristine. I thought I was ready to weld, but, boy, was I wrong! A good auto-darkening hood, gloves, mig pliers, clamps, squares, grinders, and on and on and on... quickly exceeded the money spent on the welder itself. Then setting up an account and paying for gas and bottles was lumped on top of that. Granted, I spent more than necessary on some things. And trust me, it's a lot to try and hide from the wife........... ;)
Nonetheless, the point is valid; getting the gear to weld is not unachievable. It is an attainable goal. I'm retired and am learning to weld as a home/hobbyist, so I'm not too concerned about making a living at it. Regardless, I love your recommendations to take whatever work you can - even as a helper - learn the trade, and understand that investing in expanding your capability will garner new work opportunities.
Really enjoyed this segment. Thanks so much for sharing.
Steve
VERY informative/helpful . . . . . thanks again & still !
Great interview guys!
These clips are brilliant, enjoy watching you and jd collaborate! I'm saving for multi purpose welder after seeing jd smash out duel shield.
I'll keep on tunning in from the uk ✌🏻
Luke Podmore nice!
I own and love the Multimatic 215 I choose it over the lincoln 210 for the reasons that I had better results with the Miller brand over lincoln brand. I already follow JD channel as well love the videos you guys do together.
...my first welding job here in Sacramento...1986, I ran 1/16" LIncoln dualshield all day, on 2-4" A-36 plate full pen....sometimes I didn't let go of that trigger for an hour (Tweco #4 gun).....shop built a lot of big mandrels....ordered the 60# rolls of wire...30 to a pallet....used a pallet a month or so....lots of cylinders of C02....
Doug Ankrum that is gettin' it!!! Nice
Speaking of labor intensive with hand plasma cutting. I cut out three 12 inch tall numbers for a friends house and between tracing my template, cutting the numbers, cleaning them up real nice and drilling 2 mounting holes per number, it took me between 3 to 3 and a half hours. I will get a cnc plasma table as soon as I have the space and can afford it.
Best welding video in a looong time. Prices of how much the work costs would of been cool to go along with the starting a business talk.
Hope you guys are still doing fine.
Very informative vids.much regards from the UK
Jody I know you've talked about this a little in other videos but could you do a video on how to price different jobs? Meaning stick jobs, mig jobs, and tig jobs, etc. Thank you
This was cool. Great job guys.
RetroWeld thanks!
great video fellas!
You two are the best. Simple and straight for us (old ones) wanting to start in something else (metal). One thing I may have missed out of so many comments / questions: "dual shield flux core", is it flux core PLUS gas ? Isn't it flux core a way to skip gas ?
Thank you very much.
eduardorosales1959 it is fluxcore with gas..... but it is a different wire from the "gasless fluxcore"
Great video thanks for sharing
Would love to see a cut and etch of the penetration difference of pulsed welding vs spray transfer on 3/8 mild steel
JD and Jody, I have a Lincoln Power Mig 210. I love it and it's the best welder for the money. I feel like you're describing my thoughts on here. Definitely UNDERESTIMATED ! That machine is the bomb and can weld anything. The aluminum gun is so powerful, it's actually fun to weld thick aluminuium. JD, you are the reason a couple of years ago, I bought one. Thank you! Jody, you're just the best out there! JD, I wouldn't hire Jody though. He's big bucks! Way too much knowledge! Jody, just weld the F&*(n ;' thing ) already! You're spending too much time and ACETONE. I'm just kidding Buddy. We love the cut tests. You make us definitely see the penetration. It all looks pretty under the helmet...Is it gonna hold? I'm gonna come to the next FAB- Tech. You guys both got me way addicted !
Just got on break, good timing
Soy tu fan..muy buenos tips
everytime im out side welding the wind picks up. i could be watchin for the wind all morning and not so much as a whimper, but as as soon as i put my face shield on a tornado hits!
Nice one guys. I really enjoyed this video and there wasn't even any welding in it.
Etol1963 glad you liked it!
ok Jody I got a question. you've probably been asked this many times before but Lincoln or Miller? your preference. I think I know what jd's choice is. haha. been watching for a long time and I can't tell you the amount of knowledge I have gained from your videos. my advice to any beginner is to watch your channel. I've been a welder for about a decade professionally. There is always more you can learn in whatever you do in life and your channel really helps people. thank you.
Chris Porter I like the other welders too.... my welding supply sells Lincoln soooooooooo
You need a Stel Iron-mig 221 p the best Portable mig welder on the market it is a full synorgig mashine with a lot of cool funktions Like mig Pulse
Great interview, and lots of great insight! One thing I'm curious about, have either of you guys tried any of the metal core wires (i.e. Hobart Fabcor 86R)? For what I've seen of J.D. in a couple of your vids it would be something that may benefit him (less smoke, all position, NO SLAG!). Thanks for the great work you do!
Daniel Pierce I will look into it, thanks!
Thank you
I follow you from now on JD !!!
Dion thanks!
Hey guys, love the videos and you put together some great informative content. I saw that you listed the evolution saw in the segment of tools to buy with 3,000 bucks. I currently use a horizontal band saw to do my material cutting. My question is how do the evolution chop saws stand up over time? I have read very mixed reviews about them. I weld and work out of my garage on occasion, but not enough that I need something industrial rated.
Charlie Blanchard we have one in our fab shop at the highway Dept. They are excellent. Much faster and just as accurate as a band Saw. Holding up very well. You won't be disappointed.
We have to talk about the truck costs!
Welding is a great profession, you can do fabrications or get involved with many processes used within welding-technology. Tack welding is a good-technique.Great way for making a living if you have a "passion for the technology."

I looked into the 3 different machines( Lincoln 210 mp, Miller Millermatic 211 and ESAB Rebel) and honestly the Duty Cycle isn't much different between the Lincoln and Miller but the ESAB is rated at 130A@120V 20% which is quite a bit higher than the Bigger name brands and is much cheaper in price.
Excellent
Great chat. Any Aussie viewers know where I can source some a small roll of .9mm dual shield? Keen to give it a try.
Hy sir Am watching your videos an am learning from them they help me on tig work almost but I Have problem with my mig machine that's not working gOod I want Advice how can I set the machine because the filling wear is so fast? thank's for these great videos.
I will see you guys again at Fabtech.
I have a powermig 210 mp invertec v350 and a ranger 305 g with a ln25 all of them are excellent trying to start my small business can beat lincoln
which welder would be good for a journeymen welding looking for work during winter months
miller mm215 has a screen that walks you through all the steps.
Best video ever
Would that tool list at the end be for starting a shop or a strictly mobile weld truck?
Do you gotta change the tip out for different materials?
JD’s list is the one i already had made except the extra $1000 i had set aside for a generator
I personaly stick with stick, I prefer the mobility and simplicity. But dual shield is for sure very cash money
JD, you mentioned the small yellow AHP (Alpha 160 st ). I just bought one, but haven't got it yet. What do you think about ? What are the highs and lows of that unit ? I'm asking about the lows because no one ever mentions those. I can't imagine a small $200. unit not having a few short comings. Is this thing a keeper or should I send it back ?
You said it pops breakers.... I assume you are referring to 1/8 7018, but will it burn 3/32 7018 on 120 without popping a breaker ?
can you use 80/20 Argon/CO2 with the Lincoln 71 M
Great video. Has anybody asked.....where's a good place to get T shirts made?,
Hey Jody got a quick question,do you got any more tig fingers for sale? I'm lookin to buy one before I start to get on tig at Tulsa welding school
Plasma Cam info? Where did you purchase? Model?
Jodi what do you guys think of the Lincoln mp350
This video is awesome!!! Do you need to be certified to build steps, stairways, mezzanines, etc.?
Al Michaels depends on if the customer needs/wants it?
JD Brewer thanks! I watch your channel as well. Great stuff. You guys inspire alot of people.
Which generator he use for the mp210?
Hello Jody really like your videos. Im just beginner in welding, using mig gasless machine which disappoints me. Im looking to get new peace of machine. Any advice of multiprocess machines? Tig/mig/mma. Budget of 1500£. By the way im from UK
Can u tig aluminum with the 210
Hey Jody, what is the difference between.. flux core arc welding and Dual Shield welding flux welding?
KillSwitch 777 it's just a different wire. It's a fluxcored wire that was designed to be welded WITH gas. That's the only difference in the setup.
good!!! how the fire beard does not fire from spark??
How does Dualshield compare to Innershield wire? I've used Innershield in the field in the past with a suitcase welder and it worked really well.
If im not mistaken, its innershield wire and shielding MIG gas. Im going to try it but I am wondering about the polarity on my DC welder.
Wren Wright innershield is for light duty, thin work..... dual shield (outershield) is for heavy duty, thicker welding.
Paul, dual shield is a different wire than innershield but it does use regular mig gas.
Thanks, JD. Love the videos!
I did a little research and found this, which is apparently designed for up to 1/2" plate.
www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us/Consumables/Pages/product.aspx?product=Products_Consumable_Flux-CoredWires-Self-Shielded-Innershield-InnershieldNR-211-MP(LincolnElectric)
What kind of generator you running your 210 MP welder on?
paul norris Lincoln's ranger 250 gxt
JD you mentioned you use a generator sometimes. What generator do you use? Can it do 240v, as well as 120v? Thanks
Michael O'grady Lincoln ranger 250 gxt.... yes it can do 240 as well
Great - thanks
