    I’m here because Natalie Bennet recommended this episode! I lift heavy(for me) twice a week and run 2-7 miles every other day with my dog. Maybe I should increase lifting frequency and up my calories. I’m 4ft 11inches and 130 lbs. I’m 41 and have given birth 5 times in the last 10 years. I’ve noticed I struggle with hormones. I’m trying to recomp my body to be more firm, not necessarily drop weight. It seems I’m your target audience for this topic! My husband runs ultras and is super supportive, so that helps.

    This way of thinking/training has changed my life. I have just finished 4-weeks with a personal trainer. First thing he did was up my calories by 500+ a day. Then upped my protein. I have only lost 4lbs, but 2 dress sizes! I have over double all of my lifting weights. I have PCOS and have never seen results like these, so the hormonal balancing is having an effect too.

      can you share what your height/weight and calories were before and after? I was at 1200 and looking to go up to 1400.... 500+ seems wild!! But I believe you!!

      I am 5'6". I was 235lbs when I started working with my trainer I was eating 1700-1800 calories. I had stopped loosing weight after dropping a bit. He made a guess out that my TDEE was close to 2700 calories (I do a lot of walking), so suggested I bump mine to 2300-2400 a day and see what happens. The benefits were immediate. More energy, better skin, better sleep. I lift heavy and it was like the inches were melting away. 3months in and my body is completely a different shape and I have still only lost 10lbs...but I am now 3 dress sizes down, can deadlift 100kg+. For macros, I am for 189g of protein a day and to stay around 2300cal.

    I was “live coached” on the show recently and you guys gave me awesome advice about bulking. I’m a female football player and finished a bulk (gained 10 lbs) in March and have had such a hard time cutting the weight for my summer sports season - you guys suggested that instead of trying to lose the weight, just get my body used to performing at the new weight. This has been HUGE. Thanks guys!!!!!

    Well my Sunday just got 100 times better. I have been back and forth about whether or not I should bulk for summer... it’s a scary concept, especially for a female but I think this gave me the SIGN that I needed🤍 love you guys. Time for a STRONG summer.

      It is scary. I haven’t been able to lose belly fat and have been doing intermittent fasting. I may have been reducing my calories too much for a long time. Maybe time to bite the bullet and try bulking

    It is very difficult to stop a cut if you have been successful. To tell yourself that you have to eat more when you have lost body fat that you may have been carrying your whole life is scary. Even if it’s for a trial month, the only thing you think about is “what happens if I put the weight back on?” So you continue to cut and lift and do the same things that have worked so far. You think not of the new you but the old you. Tough barrier to break through.

    I’d been eating two meals a day for years. I had lost weight but lockdowns meant I put it back on.
    Your podcasts, especially those explaining how metabolism is affected by chronic undereating encouraged me to eat one extra meal again, and Make sure the extra food was protein, not cake or sweets.
    I’m now in Phase 2 of MAPS Aesthetic, I look stronger and my metabolism is higher. I’ve lost nearly an inch around my waist. I’ve barely done any cardio.
    Thank you for your guidance, it’s been a challenge to my way of thinking, but I’m glad I made that change!

    Re-watching this old episode as it has so many great points. I've been lifting for about 9 months. I haven't lost any weight on the scale but gained a decent amount of muscle. It's crazy cause I've gone down two sizes. I wish I knew this information 20 years ago. It would've saved me a lot of time, money and frustration.

    Love bulking! It's just tough turning around into a cut because I love how I feel when I lift heavy. Cutting always means lifting less and feeling deprived of not just food, but also dem feelz.

    I've never been big into fitness. But recently I've learned how great strength training is and the lifting community online helped me think about it in a better way. Started logging calories and weighing everything, started a beginner routine, and decided I wanted to try to bulk (recent surgery + lower-than-my-normal weight + wanting to build muscle meant it was easier for me to jump that mental hurdle of 'but i don't wanna get fat'). even with my low activity level (sedentary + 30min workout 3-4x a week), I found out I actually need to be eating at least 2100 calories JUST TO MAINTAIN. what the fuck?? I was sure my maintenance was closer to 1600-1800.
    Looking in the mirror, if I hadn't listened to lifters, I would have thought I needed to lose weight! Meaning I'd be trying to diet on something stupid like 1400 cals and put myself in starvation mode, likely failing and messing up my metabolism in the process. And I sure as shit wouldn't be eating enough protein.
    It's suddenly making sense to me. There's so much bad advice out there, telling people to cut way too deep without respect to metabolism. it's no wonder so many people struggle to lose weight! Ladies, before trying to cut, FIGURE OUT WHAT YOUR MAINTENANCE ACTUALLY IS and cut SLOW. take a week or two off every so often and eat back at your maintenance to help keep that metabolism healthy! don't rush it, that's the best way to KEEP a healthy body weight, not just achieve it!
    thanks for sharing this talk, good info discussed in an enjoyable way, and hopefully it'll help encourage more women to wake up to the power of strength training!

    So happy to have discovered you guys during the pandemic. I was a hard core runner and yoga studio person before the pandemic. Now I’m weight training at home and it’s amazing.     Amazing! I'm a woman who has fallen trap to the restrictive dieting over cardio cycle. It is very refreshing and motivating to hear factual content of a different approach. All these facts to the why's are so clear, yet we have been told otherwise. Makes sense to want to consume more nutrients and have a stronger physique, yet we are told to cut, cut and cut!     I love your show! I've just recently gotten into bulking and I am trying to figure it out so I was stoked to see you covering this topic for women. I have always been just naturally on the leaner side because I'm pretty active and have high metabolism. My goal though is to be strong and look strong and I didn't want my extra activity to cause me to lose muscle mass. I upped my protein a bunch and am eating more calories and more frequently during the day. I also started using whey powder in my morning smoothie. I was vegetarian for a long time and have only been eating meat for the last few years so it is a bit unusual for me to eat so much of it as an adult and my gut isn't used to it. I'm not sure if I'm eating too many calories or if I'm getting bloated from the whey (could have a milk allergy) or added meat, but I am getting some belly fat and bloat there that I don't want. I am fairly active so I may have bulked too fast and just need my hormones to balance out. Watching now. Thanks!

    Great pod. In my opinion, this applies heavily to men as well. We see a lot of fitness people lean year round when in reality the best thing you can do is build your physique over time (bulk) and give yourself a physique to be proud of whenever you finally decide to cut. What’s the point in cutting to show a physique that has no muscle😬

    Best podcast ever. This needs to be the message, this is what it takes to get that look we all want! Reversing now and the change in energy has been absolutely life changing. Never will catch me eating sub 1500 calories ever again. We are so misled by media etc! That 1200 cal “less is better” culture is so harmful.

    Woman here! And I bulked for 5 years. And just recently cut. Starting weight was 110 (2015), bulked to 145 (2020) Now I am 127(2021). Ladies if you are on the smaller side and want to add mass to your frames, then don't be afraid to bulk. and don't be afraid to lift heavy, especially for your upper body. don't be that girl who looks like a pear go for that hour glass shape.
    Delts, Whole Posterior chain, upper chest, Quads, and Triceps
    Focus on the key lifts. OHP SQUAT DEADLIFT and even CHINS/PULLUPS, PUSHUP/DIPS

      I’m sorry I’m a beginner. I have a butt but my upper body doesn’t really give off that hourglass look to it. This is my second week and I’ve been trying to eat at a slight deficit about -300 calories than maintenance while weight training. I’m now more educated and am going to eat in a surplus to gain muscle. What were some of the exercises you recommended to give off that upper body hourglass shape I saw the recommendations you listed but your second paragraph I’m confused with?

    I appreciated this episode a ton! I'm a 29 F and have been lifting fairly consistently for almost 10 years. I've always had a small frame and was 103lbs at 19. I'm now 128lbs with a lot of muscle but I still (in my opinion) look too small and for years have wanted to gain more weight with a goal of 135lbs. I'm 5' 4". My biggest problem has always been my small appetite, so bulking is hard for me but I still try. I wish this episode delved into that side of women and bulking a bit - those who don't enjoy or have the capacity to eat a lot. I've looked and have never found that topic covered for women.

    I definitely needed this episode!! I have struggled with body image issues my whole life. I have been relatively healthy and fit until the pandemic. I’m a healthcare worker and I definitely used it as an excuse to let myself go. Now I’m using maps anabolic to to get myself back in shape! My goal is definitely to gain muscle so I will be experimenting with bulking next!

    The thing I always get hung up on with macro calculators is the activity level part. I do workout regularly - currently running Anabolic, but I also have a desk job so I'm always thrown off by do I choose sedentary or little activity...

    I'm currently in a bulk and I wanted to listen to some women's experience with it so I looked up some YT videos on women bulking and most videos say "how to bulk without gaining fat" like it's all just focused on not getting fat rather than eating enough for muscle gain. I understand that ideally we want to gain more muscle and less fat, but I think this whole focus just makes women afraid to eat more calories so they can optimally gain muscle, because they're too afraid of gaining a little bodyfat. It also makes it hard for them to stick to a bulk because as soon as they start looking or feeling a little 'fluffy' they abandon it and go into a cut again. Gaining a bit of fat is normal when you're bulking especially as a natural lifter, so pls don't worry!

    Great episode guys! I'm definitely going to try doing bulking. I'm working out from home, I have a some equipment at home to get started.
    Would it be ok to do the same lifts 3 times a week or do I need to mix it up each session? Eg. Just heavy squats, deadlifts, push press etc
    I'm going to buy Anabolic or Strong when funds allow but I really want to get started!

    Thank you! I'm excited about starting a bulk to gain more muscle and rev up my metabolism. I used the macro calculator you provided. Just a question...as long as I hit my protein daily goal, do the percentages of carbs and fats matter? I'm referring to carb tolerance levels.

    You guys are the absolute best! I’m so happy I found this podcast. At the age of 41, I’m changing my fitness approach, in large part, due to what you’re teaching (in addition to a good friend who has been telling me this for a while). I’m a health coach who works with women, and I also manage my own chronic health condition (PCOS). I’m so excited to spread this knowledge with the women I work with as well as apply it to myself, and witness the transformations occur, both mentally and physically.

    Amazing episode guys, thank you so much for the information! Question, in your experience after your wives or clients do a bulk do they need to do a cutting phase afterwards? Or can they keep eating clean and training?
    All the information I have seen has been cutting kcal to lose weight, I'm strength training 5 days a week and ignoring my hunger cues and am SO tired all the time. Recently I've increased my kcal and already have noticed more energy and strength gains in the gym. Thank you for this episode! So many women need to hear this message.

    Ive been training 4-5 times a week and i ve recomped but i came to a point where I started to look too thin and my weight has been dropping and i dont like the way i look so im going to eat more even tho its a little scary bcos us the women attach so much to the weight on the scale but i have to bulk i just hope i dont get too much fat 🙏

    I have been on a bulk (for the first time ever) since listening to the muscle mommies podcast, but I still need alot of reminders that the weight gain is good and to keep going so this was very very helpful.
    I will say that it's been shocking how much my Squat, deadlift, hip thrust and Bench numbers have gone up. In 4 weeks I added almost 30lbs to my hip thrust weight. 15 to bench. My highest Squat was 120lbs, now the highest is 145. Same for deadlift. It's been wild. I also eat at least 140grams of protein FOR THE FIRST TIME IN EVER. (protein would hit 80g on a good day). The first thing I noticed with increasing protein was how full I felt.

    I got maps aesthetics and I just finished phase 1, 3 weeks - really liking it but I'm struggling to stick to the rest times, I end up working out for over 2 hours .. I've increased the weight every session and making really good strength gains but I end up taking just a bitt more rest time especially for the initial exercises.. you think it was less effective at all? I'm working out from home so I technically have the time lol but it's tiring as hell. Looking forward to the hypertrophy phase 👌🏼
    Is maps strong a program with longer rest times? 🙃🙃

    should i bulk if my body fat percent is 27%? im 5’4 and weigh 160 lbs. ive been in a deficit since january and lost 20 lbs but i want to gain muscle. id appreciate any advice!

    So then what is the difference between a clean bulk and a reverse diet? I am in the start of a reverse diet trying to up my calories from 1300 to get my metabolism started again and I started strength training heavier but is this an actual bulk? I’m confused now!

    Last night I was working out watching this episode on my Tablet. My wife came into the garage to let me know dinner was ready.
    I said, "babe come watch this!"
    She seen on me on the ground and asked me, "what the hell are you doing?"
    I said, "the Fat Girl Press."
    She gave me the look, slammed the door shut, locked the door, and the garage went dark.
    The garage light switch is turned on from inside my house.

    A lot of the "fitness" youtubers I watched never discussed speeding up metabolism. The focus was on eating as little as possible.
