      Viren vs, yet they perform better in general by long shot. I suppose the little bitty not so pretty, it's much better fuel economy. In any performance category though, just wave bye-bye to the two pickup trucks because even though they weigh somewhere between 1500 and 3000 lb more, they usually outrun her car. Or did she get a Civic Type-R? LOL

      clovehitch, I'm not sure that you have a clue what you're talking about, but just because two pickup trucks cannot run a Honda Civic doesn't mean that all pickup trucks should be electric. That doesn't even remotely begin to make sense. By my logic, I was mocking the fact that he was putting those two vehicles at the bottom of the ladder in order to compare them with a Honda Civic. Clearly that went entirely over your head.

    With roughly equal-sized engines, a backyard engineered SC anything will always have a hard time against an even larger & heavier vehicle with a twin-turbo engine with years of factory R&D behind it. Props to the GMC guy, he tried. But the deck was stacked against him from the start in this contest, and equal props the the Blue Oval guys for doing their homework. Great video of two nice vehicles. Thanks TFL Truck!

    We had a protech charger on a vortec 454 and I can tell you that you don't really feel it until about 3000 rpm, which is what it looks like in the video. Its builds linear which I like but it doesn't have that low flat curve that a properly tuned modern turbo has. They may be putting down similar peak wheel power but the raptor has a lot more area under the curve and it shows.

  • @ramairgto72
    @ramairgto72 Před 6 lety +18

      Disagree, a Roots or Centrifugal system is "fixed" via belt to the engine, it's based off engine RPM.

    A Ford V6 engine that was built from the ground up to replace a V8, in a vehicle built for performance, versus a modified GM V6 engine originally meant for the V6 car/crossover market and adapted for mid-size trucks. There is a whole lot more work needed on the canyon to get it up to a raptor-fighter level. But does it really need to be? I bet that Canyon is a blast to drive as is.

    Centrifugal superchargers are half ass turbos. It is basically a compressor housing with a pulley in place of the turbine section. The higher the engine revs the faster the pulley spins the compressor wheel. Cheap to make, easy to install, and inefficient. Roots/positive displacement superchargers are an order of magnitude better. Plus you can hear the compressor surge on that centrifugal.

      And get poor fuel mileage, as well as being Mr. Uncreative Cookie Cutter?

    • @cheatrslix1
      @cheatrslix1 Před 6 lety +3

      Use Trollgun 01, if you think the Roush version is uncreative or cookie cutter, you don't know anything about the Roush model. Personally, I am not a fan of Roush because the price is incredibly High. Anyone who thinks I knew Raptor is extremely expensive has not looked at the Rouse. In its highest form, you will probably spend $90,000 for a Roush if you get a good deal. I saw one on a dealer lot about a month ago which stickered for $99,999. I couldn't help but to laugh. This year idiocy of the idea overwhelmed me.
      That said, Roush comes with a warranty and that is definitely not cookie-cutter in terms of 700hp vehicles, let alone pickups. There's also the fact that they put silly things insofar as looks on, which again are not cookie-cutter for pickup. I don't necessarily care for any of it, but it is there and it is not on just everything. Perhaps the biggest thing that isn't cookie cutter is the starting price of a Roush and as far as I can tell, that is somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000 over standard and only includes aesthetics. I would never spend $10,000 additional for any vehicle based on non working looks pleasing(to some) items. When you get to the top end model though, you might wonder how things don't come unglued because they do have serious performance capabilities. Roush upgrades Wheels and Tires and Brakes and of course, the engine. If one keeps his or her foot out of the throttle, if you will kindly other routes is probably almost exact to the Raptor. Odds of that being the case are probably close to zero, but so what. Lol if you put the two side by side for an acceleration contest, there is no question the routes would walk away from the Raptor. I don't think there's a dealership sold and warrantied by the manufacturer pickup truck out there today that even comes close in terms of sheer power and acceleration. Still, I would not buy a Roush labeled vehicle unless I knew it was a very low number and had very low mileage on it and I certainly would not buy at sticker MSRP.
      I do prefer the 5-liter over the 3.5 TT V6. I probably prefer it over the 2.7 as well. It is quite powerful and smooth among pickups and moves the F-150 almost effortlessly. To me, in terms of the field, it has the smoothness of the 5.3 L with the motion of the 5.7 Hemi. It is not jerky and the power comes in in a way that I would describe as linear. I like the Raptor for everything it is, but I am one of the masses who, regardless what Ford says, would consider sticker price if they had simply used a single or a twin turbocharged 5L instead. I can hardly imagine how much more capable the truck would really be. The 3.5 TT is actually a very good engine and we know it can be tuned to well over 600hp. By the same token, the five leader can we brought two over 1200hp

    In 2014 Chevrolet built a twin turbo 3.6 liter v6 for the Cadillac CTS that produced 420 hp. Whoa! Imagine if they dropped that thing in their mid-sized trucks.... The problem I hear over and over again is that the auto manufacturers limit hp in the midsize trucks as they compete with their full size (money shot) lineups. We receive trucks with what I consider barely adequate hp/torque numbers when perfectly good v8's are built by most all full size truck manufactures. I do not want a full size truck because they are too big but I do want Toyota's 5.7L V8 in my Tacoma. Everyone knows that larger displacement motor can run efficiently at low rpm pushing lighter vehicles around and look no further than Toyota's lineup and compare the 4 and 6 cylinders in fuel consumption and hp ratings. They are so close (within 1-2 mpg) that the 4 cyl makes little sense for most applications. For kicks I looked up the fuel ratings for the 2017 Corvette with a 6.2L V8 with 7 speed manual and no shock there as it has a combined rating of 19 mpg. 16 city and 25 hwy and puts out well over 400 hp. I need to stop complaining....

    • @tacopro218
      @tacopro218 Před 6 lety

      One more thing, the new 3.5L Tacoma motor can not be supercharged or turbo'd at this time because of it's Atkinson cycle" design. Tacoma owners are stuck with existing hp/torque outputs for their trucks unless someone comes up with a solution. If I had an extra 10k sitting around, I'd do a 5.7L I-force swap but I have other wants beyond more hp. The manual transmission in the Tacoma, in my opinion, makes up for some of the motors short comings as my truck tows like a champ.

    Hello guys! So being a very satisfied owner of a 2016 Colorado Z71,4x4, V6, Ext Cab, that is totally stock, that I use to tow a 4,000 gross weight travel trailer with all up and down the east coast and as far west as The Smokey Mountains of Gatlinburg Pigeon Forge areas with ease and comfort, with just enough room for the wife and I and two small Cocker Spaniel dogs. On one trip to Key West, we brought our Sportster with up in the bed! On that trip we rolled over a Cat Scale at 9,540 lbs CGVW! While still riding and handling fine, with plenty of power and brakes, while getting decent mileage at an average on that 4,000 mile trip of 14 mpg! I have been interested in a supercharger! I like the kind that fits in place of the intake manifold though, I believe that will add more rwhp than the type the guy in the video has. But they are a lot more expensive and work! But that would make the truck just amazing! But hey MATT that was an amazing job you and your son has done together, that is the most important part! If you do get a half ton, I’d suggest you get a 6.2 in a nice new GMC AllTerrain!

    Mind you the supercharger is set at low boost which is 6psi compare 15psi turbo. Once he bumps that up to 10psi the supercharged GMA will win. Also you don't need to spool a supercharger. Rootblower comes on at low rpm. Announcer guy made a mistake. It's the turbo that needs spooling.

    It is a very fun ride but likes to fall on its face at launches and immediately after shifting due to this.
    I have no doubt if this was a 1/4 mile race that the canyon would have won, it was reeling in the ford quickly at the end of this short track.
    The truck is currently listed so I he can move up to a half ton but his wife is not very happy about that.
    The reason it was supercharged and not a 1/2 ton already is the fact that it is paid off and his wife didn’t want him paying taxes and registering a new vehicle, yet somehow he snuck a supercharger past her.
    He began with the canyon over a 1/2 ton due to length issues with his previous garage setup and the fact that the only reason he wanted a truck was to have a small bed to more easily transport household items and not to tow.
    Now that we tow the camper a lot he is jealous of my Tundra and he believes that will be the next truck.

      David Cox I have a 5.7 crewmax tundra and agree with that choice👍🏼👍🏼. Also have a supercharged FJ cruiser with 400hp to the wheels. I completely agree about the intrusive torque management holding it back. The newer tundras also have this more intrusive torque management after 2014, unlike the earlier 07-13 tundras which are much faster to especially in higher gears. Another thing to remember is that Raptor launches in all wheel drive...

      You must not be much of a car guy. Modifying stuff that you have to do better than it originally did is a hobby.
      The canyon tows very respectably and in a drag race with a trailer hooked up would win vs my 15 tundra. The issue is in Wyoming wind and Colorado mountain roads, a bigger truck would be more comfortable.
      I don’t think I would consider what I said dirty laundry and certainly wouldn’t insinuate his marriage is in jeopardy. Sometimes women have silly rules and men have to do what it takes to keep them happy and in this case it’s been not trading in his truck.

    I love supercharging just about anything but this
    isn’t something I’d done.. Belt driven centrifugal superchargers are not
    very efficient for tow vehicles, they are noisey and do not add the power of a turbo system or torque of a roots style blower and this guy is towing so you’d think he would want torque ..The 3.6 is quick engine for its size,but it is a problem plaged engine with a history of timing chain problems that cost the owners a small fortune to repair in order to put the check engine light out so they can pass inspection.... it’s pretty sad when a bone stock raptor with a smaller engine on 35s and weighing a lot more can wax this thing in any legal speed limit acceleration contest . And the icing on the cake ? You just voided the power train warranty on your brand new canyon ! And it still can’t stick with a stock ecoboost . If the raptor beat that means any ecoboost will since the Raptor is the slowest ecoboost made even though it has the most power ,the regular 3.5 and 2.7 will beat it by even more in a race.

      Mallett Cars is in the final stages (tuning) of releasing a roots-style supercharger for the ZR2. It'll provide tons of low-end torque, right where a truck usually needs it. The centrifugal supercharger on this guy's GMC provides little boost at all on the low-end, and ramps up to higher peak values.

Not to knock the Toyota, but it's fuel economy is bottom-of-the-barrel at best. It also doesn't have the best power or torque or tow capacity or haul capacity. That 5.7 could definitely use some improvement. I think it's the oldest engine in my entire lineup of the 5 major manufacturers. LD ODOM Didn't the Shelby Raptor already come out? They have the same 3.5 Liter EcoBoost, it's overpriced in my opinion.

      He also said he bought the supercharger for gas mileage... under no circumstance will it improve fuel economy.
      People don't realize that supercharger/turbos are band aids for small engines to be fast but also be fuel efficient. It doesn't make them fuel efficient.

      @erikstephens34 Před 6 lety

      Mopar Magic, While i generally agree with you in his case it might actually be different. He is doing a fair bit of towing at high altitude. That naturally aspirated V6 would be struggling and working frequently well outside it's optimum BSFC curve. Adding a supercharger will help a lot with the altitude and might make the truck operate in a more optimal BSFC zone.

      clovehitch yea I'ma slap a supercharger on that Fiesta and tow 3 tons in the mountains while popping wheelies going by that raptor outclassing all the way yo

    Although this GMC Canyon is faster than a stock GMC Canyon by a long way (it’s probably as fast as Roman’s gen 1 Raptor), the excess heat cooking that engine could shorten this truck’s life by quite a bit. In addition, an air intake in the engine bay might be a problem if Matt takes the truck off road. The videos produced by RIPP show the same air intake placement so Matt is following the company’s guidance.

    • @SergePupko
      @SergePupko Před 6 lety

      Chris Cheezer you dont have to spend 80 to get a raptor. Most I've seen st dealers go between 50 and 60K.

    The *canyon is a 6 speed* . That hurts it if it was a 8 speed might be a totally different story on a short race like that.

    • @cheatrslix1
      @cheatrslix1 Před 6 lety

      SOLAR SS I doubt it. We truck probably only got into second gear and most as it is and it would have gone through at least another complete gear change with an 8-speed. Changing gears is wasting time. For whatever reason, that power and torque simply doesn't get laid down to the ground soon enough. At least, not soon enough to outrun the F-150 Raptor.

    • @jbouchard4877
      @jbouchard4877 Před 6 lety

      The short track hurts the heavier truck. The longer the track. The Raptor would've beaten it by a much greater gap.

    • @llamawizard
      @llamawizard Před 6 lety +1

      So what? That's GM's fault for keeping their outdated transmission. Ford utilizes much more advanced technology, and this test proves it.

    • @Stuka87
      @Stuka87 Před 6 lety

      The Canyon has a lot less power while weighing almost the same. The transmission would not have been enough to offset it.

    • @nathanmcdonald610
      @nathanmcdonald610 Před 6 lety +1

      That Canyon probably weigh's 700lbs+ less than that Raptor. Just because the new Raptors are made of aluminum doesn't mean they are light. They are only about 400lbs lighter than the 2010 - 2014 Steel bodied Raptors.

  • @TheSingleTrucker
    @TheSingleTrucker Před 6 lety

    The six spd and a maybe the blower result could be why the canyon lags behind.
    Raptor has 5 valves/cylinder, main+secondary stage turbos, 10 spd auto and Sport mode. And that's not the ceiling of performance.
