  • Chairs occupy their own special place in the woodworking world. Our interaction with a chair is much more direct than with a bookcase. We sit in the chair for extended amounts of time, so it must be comfortable. We need to be confident in its construction and feel secure, so it must be strong, and it must look appealing, and ideally, make us look appealing in it. With all of those demands, chairs can sometimes be difficult to design and tricky to build with small intricate joints, an array of different parts, and oh my, those compound angles!
Slab chairs, however, are simple, fun, and inviting. The styles and designs are almost limitless, and the construction is direct - make a seat, attach the legs, add the back, take a seat, and relax. Another slab chair bonus is that the parts are nearly always under 2 feet so they can be made on most desktop CNC routers.

Thank you for continuing to make videos in this series. It is great to have an established group, like Woodsmith, providing content on CNC use.

These courses were amazingly good for new people stepping into this innovative world. Thanks a million.

Nice chair. I like the design. I don't think I need a CNC to make it though. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

True, you don't have to have a CNC for this chair, however it is interesting for me to think of the CNC router as the primary power tool in my shop rather than an accessory - kind of a modern do-all machine.

What is the mount you are using for the contoller on the left side of the Shark CNC?

The Shark CNC used on the show came to us already assembled and with the mount. The mount was added to make it more convenient to move the machine for demonstrations and teaching. The mount is a 7 7/8" tall by 6 5/8" wide piece of plastic. It is attached with two machine screws tapped into the edge of the gantry arm. There is a notch for the electrical wiring of the controller midway on the inside edge and another on the lower corner to give clearance for the X and Z axis wiring. The controller is attached with 4 machine screws to the mount. It's handy to have the controller so close.
