- Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do revolutionized the world of martial arts. By incorporating fencing style foot work into bare knuckle boxing, the style is as flashy as it is powerful. Today, we take a look at some concepts I learned while visiting @jkdcolorado

“The majority of people who practice Jeet Kune Do are mixed up, they think it should be a part of Wing Chun, a part of MMA, a part of Thai boxing, a part of wrestling, you know, a part of Wing Chun, which this is completely incorrect. You don't go from style to style, you go from distance to target or target to distance. Longest weapon to the nearest target and the most direct and efficient route possible, that is Jeet Kune Do.” - Tommy Carruthers

Nice work!! Great video on the basics and foundation of Jeet Kune Do!
Thank you! I appreciate that
*I agree, he explained it very well for a non JKD guy! He's got the ability to pick things up fast. Love your channel too btw metrolinamartialarts*
I want to learn JKD so much but there's no trainers near me😢😔
@@Jspg119 Then your best option is online from someone who can show you the moves so that you can get the form and some basic attack and movements correct, but you'll need a training partner because there are so many things related to positioning that someone needs to correct you on. I'm going to a JKD club and also learn and practice from the online videos and I realise how important it is to attend a club and be corrected by your instructor or senior training partner.
@@MartialArtsMoves yeah that would be hard to find a training partner that would know how to correct me on JKD
JKD Lead hand= Bladed stance, 3/4 or vertical fist, 'Hammer Principle' ( from fencing, move the hand first, dropping towards target,) Explosive fencing like burst of rear leg, Upper body twirl (Jack Dempsey,) fist lands before the lead foot hits the ground (Jack Dempsey, ) hit with bottom three Knuckles (Jack Dempsey.) These are all the components that make a JKD lead hand powerful. Bruce incorporated Boxing, fencing and specific things form Jack Dempsey into this punch.
Somebody knows what's up. ❤
as a fencing instructor you have given me something to consider some of the ways I teach my art.
Interesting. How do you mean?
For only attending one class, you picked up a lot! Nice video as usual!
Bruce Lee: This is not a style, jeet kune do is about using only what you need. I only use what i need and works for me
People: Ok, i’m gonna make that a style and copying it (?
Ok no, to be fair the video is great, and explain a lot of the basics of jeet kune do, but lots of people thinks that jeet kune do has a proper style to learn, but people shouldn’t try to copy bruce lee moves, because what worked for him may not work for you and me. It’s not about you adapting to jeet kune do, it’s about jeet kune do adapting to you, to have your own jeet kune do

I've read thing or two 'bout Jeet Kune Do - but this video opened my eyes to Jeet Kune Do in a totally new way
Wow, how so?
@@CombatSelfDefense The philosophy: I've never realized, how many ways you can use that simple philosophy to make up your own fighting style
Very informative. Great work Rob!
I’m too late to this video… But I love the simplicity of this whole video… Been wanting to learn JKD for a long time now and been YouTubing many videos here and there to master the basics and this one right here is solid with the basics… Good stuff… Much respect 💪🏾💪🏾
Thank you! Keep me updated on your training!
@@CombatSelfDefense anytime!! I’m a 3rd Degree black belt in Taekwondo and a Krav Maga instructor… His philosophy alone helps me with my training and when I teach as well… But training the style itself is fascinating to me… Thanks again
💯💥
Good video man...
I took the jkd stance and strikes (lefthanded doing traditional) and combined the MT kick (especially switch steps) so it helped get the power back in the rear strikes...
Good vid bro....following!
Lee was a fan of Jack Dempsey's work. His straight lead was also heavily inspired by the way Dempsey throw his jab with the falling step ( jab with your body weight behind it). The way you throw with the rear hand with the rear leg step forward is called trigger step, basically to increase the range of your rear punch.
There's another concept that you left out is the High Low concept. Basically if i attack with the lead hand (eye poke, straight lead) then the follow up won't be the rear hand (most of the time) but the lead leg instead with side kick to the leg or front snap kick to the balls (in self defense) or push kick (if i'm doing combat sport). Of course there's another combination to use the rear hand is jab/eye poke to create flinch reaction and used passing step to switch side, get close and barrage them with hooks and uppercuts
Bruce was inspidred by Jim Driscoll's Straight Left
Their were a number of fighters that Bruce studied and yes Jack Dempsey was one of them. Jack inspired Mike Tyson as well.
In addition to Mr Dempsey Bruce also studied the technical know how of the brown bomber Joe Louis. Where Mr Louis developed the six inch punch Bruce took that and developed the one inch punch.
Lastly Bruce studied for a full two years Muhammad Ali. He's on record asking how did a man big as Muhammad Ali move so fast. Well he went and found out and Jeet Kune Do as we know it was born.
You are very knowledgeable and I am going to take a look at Jack Dempsey. Be safe out here.
Awesome channel dude, I like your style and your take on other styles, thank you for creating and sharing.
Thank you so much!
You taught me alot! Thanks! 👍🏽
Glad you liked it!
Interesting, For a while I wondered if you could turn Fencing into a fist style.
Nice video. Sifu Mike Gittleson is a great instructor. There's more to JKD than what you just picked up from one class, but it's a good start ;-)
Bruce was simply optimizing his main attributes!!!
6:48 best explanation of retreating leg!
6:52 best explanation of retreating jab!
Whole video was excellent, and well oriented!
I appreciate that!
I've had some JKD but apparently, I forgot the one skipping footwork pattern, thank you. I last did it around 1991 in Cleveland. Love me some focus mitts. Def. not traditional.
In Europe such approaches to JKD are a rarityv
Thank you,,,,, this what I been trying to say for many years now
My style is no style.
- Bruce Lee
Oh, Bruce. A hundred years ahead of his time.
rule of thumb in jkd: start off every encounter with a kick. Bruce's best practice in one of his books. also to make all kinds of crazy sounds to irritate your opponent. the retreating jab is part of a pendulum movement its also to avoid lower kicks
When your shoulder is turned against the opponent (3.19) your hit lands him before and he cannot even reach you if you are not dwarf or otherwise short hand (attacker most likely will hit in a box formation, if attacks) but you can. After the first punch comes the back hand. Try it. Basic Silat punch combo. Your first posture is perpendicular to opponent, 1st and 2nd punches comes from the body rotation.
Love the sleeping dogs intro music!
Bare knuckle fencing....fkn right!!
Bruce Lee said " do fencing for six months"
Yeah he did explained vety clearly for sure, im a chick im 58 years old now 2024, i used to do taekwondo when i started at 16 years old and i used my body weight to lean in to my punches what back then too 😮to me this is normal i showed my son he was 7 years old at the time it was in a after school class first time i said to him to lean in use your body weight ! He did there was kid slot older then him too 14 years olds there to my sons turn the instructor said this boy did it correctly and he very strong hes a natural 😮it was Damiens ever furdt time too. Go boy hes 18 years old today !! So proud of him too awwww❤😊
@mariakeller is the channel for my Sifu, Duane Keller. He has black belts under Ted Wong, Joe Lewis, Lamar Davis, and others. I'm not belted, but I trained w him for years. We went over alot of this.
Haha you were here in Colorado??? Nice I've trained with Sifu Mike for a good bit here... I'm one of the other JKD full instructors in Colorado. His gym is a good one!
Yeah I go there pretty frequently! Hoping to pay him a visit again in a few weeks.
@CombatSelfDefense I'll definitely have to stop by when you do haha! I'm a former LEO and current LE instructor myself, I love your channel and work brutha!
It isn't a style. It's a concept.
Exactly- hearing called “ a style “ makes my teeth itch /,eyes bulge !
In fact , “ a combat system “ I posit is correct .
It meant to be a way of fighting not a style of fighting I thought.
You are correct sir. This goes against Bruce’s philosophy.
Exactly
Be like water. Flow. As Mr Lee said.
Couldn't Savate (which some of JKD's kicks come from) be considered empty handed fencing?
Certainly, and savate i think was developed with the intention of replacing a sword with a leg
Man these comments suuuuck lol. Thankfully this video doesn’t. I love when JKD is given its due instead of being dismissed or worse misrepresented like so many mma inspired channels do. Great job explaining the uniqueness of JKD principles when applied to arts and i love the fencing metaphor.
Jeet Kune Do does NOT have a distinctive "style"-- it has a distinctive PRINCIPLE-- basic physics PRINCIPLE-- that will work on ANY "style"....
Instead of stepping out with the rear leg, I step out with the front leg with the cross. Why? It gets your head off the center line.
Exactly- correct ! 👍
It resembles fencing because the entire basis of JKD footwork IS fencing... he states this clearly in The Tao of JKD books...
I usually take my Chi Tea with milk and sugar. Saying 'Chi Tea' is a bit like saying 'Tea, Tea', as Chi means Tea in Urudu. What? Oh... Tai Chi, not Chi Tea. Apologies, please continue...
4:04 it lands but my opponent isn't dead ... now i want throw second punch 👊
People. like Bruce said, as long as people have two arms and two legs there is only one style, and that is scientific self-defense. Why aren't there a hundred styles of basketball?
Basketball is a sport. Individuals have different attributes, but the goal is the same!!!
I do CANE-DO--- and have challenged "jeet kune do" guys.. one in particular- challenged me- and without hesitation, I accepted. He took his bladed position and I could easily see the shoulder lift to tighten and throw his jab-- and smacked his ankle rather sharply with my cane and he was down.. and I didn't have to move.. :) I told him- "you need more practice".. and walked away.. (I need to clarify- I have high ranking black belts in 5 arts- plus jeet kune do and just plain hillbilly mean- also a retired ranger- ex fed bodyguard with over 1000 Transactions- which is what I call fights because someone always pays--- and only 2 losses)... My EXPERIENCE and awareness far outweighed his "know it all" method..

@@gregorylatta8159 NO- just 40 years experience.. and didn't want to take 10 paragraphs to say what I can say in two sentences.
Who would of thought my fighting style imitated Bruce Lee style with little to no effort 😉
I also like 52blocks.
You need the hand traps
You mean those that Bruce was moving away from ?
Dude ill give you my whole paycheck and live in the stret if you come to Missouri and train me.
You talking to me or Sifu Mike haha
Never lower your hands always protect your face
What if someone is trying to tackle your legs? Should I protect my face then?
The issue is finding someone who teaches the jeet kune do youre talking about.
You don't use gloves in a real fight, only bare knuckles. Do you carry gloves when walking on the street?
If you were training in sword fighting would you practice with a real sword?
@@CombatSelfDefense bahahahaha
Actually, that’d be you doing the wrong formation.
actually this "fencing" style is often used to describe wing chun, depending on your lineage. Not surprising, given where BL got his basic training
Not at all. You are misinformed.
Nah
0:13 instructor is doing the wrong fist formation for punching.
Has nothing to do with bare knuckle.
Actually, that’d be you doing the wrong formation.
@@roydenmills9134 Thumb should be over the fingers not to the side
@@sebastiananderson2047 My friend, do it how you like. Sounds like a good way to break your thumb but I may misunderstand what you’re saying. But that dude is undoubtedly doing it right. Peace out.
Maybe his thumb is messed up and he doesn’t have full range of thumb motion. 🤷🏽♂️
3;45 के बाद से आप हग दिए। You just screamed shit after 3:45 .
Too much theory, not enough practical applications. If these boxing applications are valid demonstrate it against a competitive resisting opponent. If you can't, it's just more dry land swimming.
Pretty bold of you to quote Bruce Lee while dissing the system he created but ok
@@CombatSelfDefense I'm not dissing Bruce Lee or his art. I'm questioning yours and other jkd instructors training methods, and application of the art.
Nice but not quite correct.🤔🤨 When you punch directly with the back hand, you punch like a boxer and not like a JKD practitioner. In JKD, you strike with the back hand without changing the position of your legs while you punch like a boxer, that is not the way of JKD.😵😵💫🥴🥶🥵🧐😕😟🙁☹😮😯😲😳🥺😧😱😖😣😞🥱
This might work on your girlfriend….
JKD does strong side forward. So Bruce hypothesis that he could KO people with his lead hand. Think Ryan Garcia.
