    I don't understand how the Atom can be a drivers car. You can not drive it half the year. You could drive the GT3 and 458 all year. The Atom might be the ultimate track day car ... but not a drivers car.

      @JohnnyWrong Před 10 lety +22

      "Drivers car" means fun to drive. Nothing to do with practicality.
      If practicality were a factor then the Porsche would have walked it again.

    • @MrLalasd
      @MrLalasd Před 10 lety +8

      Johnny Wrong ***** KingStivan I understand what you guys are saying. But, I can't drive the atom to work. I can't drive the atom when it snows. I could drive it in the rain ... but I don't like being wet and cold. The point I am trying to make is that a true drivers car should be drivable all year long. If I can't physically drive a car I enjoy daily then it is not a good drivers car. I am not saying the atom is a bad car. The atom is more of a weekend/trackday car. It is not a drivers car.

    • @JohnnyWrong
      @JohnnyWrong Před 10 lety +7

      MrLalasd Again, you're missing the point entirely. You're confusing practicality with fun.

    • @MrLalasd
      @MrLalasd Před 10 lety +3

      Johnny Wrong But, one has to physically be able to drive an automobile to have fun. With the atom one can't physically drive it for half the year ... so you can't have fun for half the year.

    Out of the ~10 car review channels I watch, Autocar has become my clear favorite. Steve just knows how to drive these cars, and all in all, these reviews are about the driving experience. That's what matters - no stories, no show, just driving. Thank you Autocar!

    I might be alone with this but I feel like the Ariel had nothing to do in this comparison. It is not a "real" car. Would I have the money to be in the business for a driver's car like the ones tested here, I wouldn't even consider an Ariel Atom. For me it's something you rent/keep at the racetrack for track use and track use only.

      Dude, I understand your point, I really do, but they were looking for a car that can really make you smile while you drive it at its limits, which is why they tested these cars on the track. If you want a REALLY fast car you can use everyday, get the 650S, I know I would if I had the money. cheers!

      You have to have a little more dedication, that's all. Bikers manage to ride all year round, what's the difference?
      I don't think there's a more exciting road car than an atom. Can you imagine anything more thrilling? Not only is it fast, it's tiny, meaning you can actually enjoy it on the road.

    You simply cannot compress such a big test in a 12 min, quite standard quality video. Either you make a 1h long, epic quality video or a 3 min video saying "we did this, go check out the article". But what you did here really is the worst you could do.

      I think the problem is that they didnt have a huge sponsor as Motor Trend did. These videos are free and it is impossible to make a 1hr video without a sponsor like Mobil 1. In addition, by not having a sponsor they can remain unbiased.

    So, its not really Britain's best drivers car competition, rather the bext drivers car on a racing track. to be Britains best drivers car, it needs to be the best on motorways at 70mph, on country roads, on potholed city roads, in rain, ice snow and wind. none of these cars would be that, rather would be worst in normal days useage

      ***** We don't care... The fact is they didn't get it but AutoCar did. Also, I find this video much better than MT's series because the editors give their opinion straight, and tell you specifically what's up with the car. MT's format got boring, and they're starting to give MT's Car of the Year award waaaay too much hype man. I love MT, but I really enjoy Steve and the Autocar team more.

    I would drive the GT3 more than any other car in the competition simply because its the all-rounder and makes no real sacrifice in comfort, performance, and practicality. Id drive it to the supermarket, take it on vacation with my concubine, or drive it to work. Then on the weekend thrash it on the track. Cant say Id do that w/any other car there except the Vette or 650S. The 458 Speciale is almost a track-prep car. I think I saw the weld seams on the floorboards. No woman of mine would ever tolerate the VB&H of such a car like that for more than 10 miles, and, I wouldnt want to listen to the complaining any longer than that. But I could drive the GT3 (or 650S) from NYC to LA and never feel fatigued. To me, thats what makes it a driver's car -- you want to drive it every single chance you get no matter where you are going. A driver's car for me is the sports car that could force me to sell every other car I own. As amazing as the 458 Speciale is, nobody is driving that more than 50 miles from home. In 10 years, most Speciales will have 3,500 miles on them. But a GT3 will have 85,000 miles on it. Just my perspective. I do love everything about the 650S except the price. And the Vette is a grand bargain if you can get over the garish looks from the adolescent GM design department.

    i can't be sure that it happened this year but in the past Autocar has mentioned that Ferrari literally sends a team of engineers out to the circuit with the car days before the competition even begins to get the car totally dialed in. Im not trying to say the Speciale isn't a spectacular automobile i really really love it but i think that kind of defeats the purpose of Britain's Best Driver's car. As far as i know all the other cars just get sent down or picked up and taken to the track. There might be an engineer or two there to make sure there aren't problems with the car but thats different than a team of engineers getting a car setup for a circuit. Not to mention all the stories of Ferrari boosting their cars performance for comparison tests. Im not saying that the Speciale didn't deserve to win, but just trying to take it all with a pinch of salt. Here is an interesting article written by Chris Harris that talks about this. Mr.Harris was actually banned from driving Ferraris because of his comments... jalopnik.com/5760248/how-ferrari-spins

      911 GT3 is a great car, but Speciale takes everything to another level which is sadly, the terminal station for amazing petrol puristic supercars. The 458 Speciale is the best driver's car of them all. Fully deserved. Car full of passion, character, legacy, top notch technology, it has the best NA engine with fantastic sound, the best handling and balance,...machine of many superlatives and already a legend.

    Speciale is truly leaps and bounds above the others. They didn't even consider 650S among the best, and they were all British. And some people were saying Ferrari was afraid to give a Speciale to be compared against 650S. I hope they got their answer. Just because Ferrari don't see many of these occasions as special and won't give a car does not mean anything. Simply just that Ferrari don't see the occasion worthy of their cars. It's not like they need any advertisement.

    • @jeffwill4923
      @jeffwill4923 Před 10 lety

      650S lost here because of track handling not street. Much like head 2 head with 458 they focused more on track. You still comparing a polish track car to a polish street car. I see the 650S more inline with the F12 not 458. Mclaren has far too many track cars in the lineup. Why make 650S into some stripped out Speciale??? They have a track only 650S Sprint GT. Why make another 1??? People are crying enough P1 too track focused. They could easily make 650S drop in height and handle like P1 then it would be labeled as another track car in their lineup.
      Hopefully next yrs. test will have a Z06. Hopefully Ferrari doesn't back out of the test. It has a lot the Speciale hardware on it, comparison is much inline unlike 650S.
      After reading review of the Stingray they will say same stuff; this thing is primitive and too wide on street. So 458 wins only because of street not track.

    650 S will always win the road handling. On track 458 shall lead that area. The Mclaren was only praised for how it rode the bumps at track. So all is inline with all recent tests.

    Makes since they seem to pick similar cars to motortrend. Raw, high reving, and naturally aspirated cars that are more like race cars for the street.... but when they pick a "race car" (z/28) its considered biased lol. Either way great video good job autocar.

      z/28 is more of a track car than the zr1 i think.. Ariel Atom should not be in this list gt3 is considerably less of a track car than the z/28 even the tyres are more appropriate for road use .................. what the point of a drivers car that you cant drive unless its 20 degrees out and there's not a hint of rain in the sky i would agree if they picked the gt3 rs that is just as race inspired as the z/28

  • @mikerich32
    @mikerich32 Před 10 lety +9

    I don't know about the Atom. When I'm deciding whether I like a car or not, there are some major factors: how it feels, how it looks, and how it sounds (among some others). And when I first heard this Atom in the video, I literally thought there was a kid screaming. It just doesn't sound good at all. There's good low sounds, like a Mercedes SLR, and there's good higher sounds, like a the F1 cars of a few years back (they sounded better than the newer ones), but this Atom is just disgusting to hear.

      @mikerich32 Před 9 lety

      Yeah I know it's the supercharger. But superchargers don't sound good all by themselves. They need to be backed up by a deep, throaty exhaust sound.
      And potatis you're right, I cannot completely know what it will sound like just by listening to it in a video. But it will not sound good in person, according to my taste, I KNOW THAT.

    • @Nemoticon
      @Nemoticon Před 9 lety

      mikerich32 If you can, get a ride in or have a go in an Atom. No matter which side of the car you sit in, you won't be able to stop smiling. It's a proper driver's car that doesn't allow you to do anything else but drive... and it'll make you feel like a hero. The sound from an Atom is incredible, sitting in it, it isn't just a sound, it's a sensation, the high central intake just sucks the side of your head off while the open wheels spit gravel in your face. When you eventually get out of the car, you feel like you've been reborn, both invigorated and worn out all at the same time.

    I presume the road part of the test was just driving to/from the track, then? I think placing almost sole emphasis on how they feel on a dry day on a certain track is pretty limiting to the weight the results can carry. Certainly for most people this situation won't happen all that often. How they feel on the road at normal driving speeds, in normal traffic and in our usual mix if weather would paint a much larger picture. For example the GT3 is brilliant on the track but if it had to be balanced between road/track and all weathers the Turbo would most likely come out as more fun more of the time.
    Bikes went through this sillyness a few years ago where they were almost all developed for track performance at the expense of everything else. It's more appropriate on a bike but even then people have started shying away from pure sports bikes in favour of things that are more capable for the 98% of the time you're not on a dry track.

    I do think including the Atom in the best drivers car '14 is stretching the term "car" a bit far. It's obviously a fantastic machine but comparing it to a regular "tin top" does seem to me to be a bit silly. Surely a worthy entrant into top 3 would have been the McLaren, the internet is buzzing with people gushing about how great it is, but it didn't even make top 3? Also where was GTR Nismo? I watched Steve talking about it a couple of weeks ago like they'd managed to reinvent the wheel, and now it can't even make the same short list as a Corvette??? As ever I'm very confused about the car of the year test...Or should I say Best drivers car (that we could actually get our hands...On that day) 2014.

Would it really kill them to film more footage and describe every car? The overview was so quick that if you blinked, you probably missed a car. The description of the Jaguar was no longer than 2 sentences, for example. I love your commentary, and only want MORE, please!

      derbigpr500 1.2 seconds over what suppose to be one of the best Ferrari's ever built, compared to the atom which is built by a tiny company, its the david v goliath thing. you expect the Ferrari to be fast but you don't expect a shed build to be that much quicker.
      1.2 seconds on a relatively small track is a huge margin
