    In this video we take a look at the LEICA SL (Type601), originally released in 2015 for approximately $7500 (Body only plus tax), the LEICA SL became somewhat of a sleeper camera and got looked over. Today you can buy one in excellent condition on the 2nd hand market for between $2000-2300. Currently this is my favorite camera and in this video we take a look as to why, check it out cheers.

    I shoot the sl2s and let me tell you why I recently purchased a new SL 601, the sensor in this camera and color it renders is unmatched. The camera has wireless features and features in general that are still relevant to this day. If you want to shoot M glass, this is a perfect body for those who dont want the rangefinder. Ill never sell the SL, its just too good of a camera and one of Leicas best ever made. It also renders sharper images than the new sl2s, I have both and I see the difference. The sl2s has better iso performance, but you really cant beat the sl if you want to get into the leica platform..

    Absolutely worth it. Beautiful photo rendition. Found a brand new one earlier this year for around $1985.

    I bought a new 601 SL as the new SL2 rolled out. After seeing the images from the new sensors I concluded the 601 sensor produces the most pleasing images from any FF camera regardless of brand through today 2021. I’m so glad I bought it, plus the four pad controls and built in GPS. It simply has a spectacular look that has not been eclipsed since 2015.

      Yeah, I was really surprised by how intuitive the 4 pad controls are, especially against the new 3 button layout. Have the two (and just these two no more) within the reach of my right thumb makes it possible for me to adjust ISO and AF mode precisely without moving my eye away from the viewfinder nor accidentally pressing the wrong button, and when I look at the LCD the two on the left can also be used to do something that I less often need like switching between profiles etc. I don't like having a thousand buttons on my camera, nor have too many crammed together like Panacanikony. The original SL design is perfect for me.

    Well said, I've had mine since day one. Noctilux, 24mm Summilux, and quite an array of Vogtlander/Canon and it's a dream still. The next and biggest move I'll make is the S3 for commercial, slowed down work. This creates the best "spread" between both worlds for me. Thanks again for the video as it still inspires to keep the original SL

      Which Canon lenses do you use with the SL? How is the autofocus, assuming you mean EF lenses?

      I have the SL2 and recently acquired the S007. All I can say is wow!! The s007 is an underrated and under appreciated camera. I wrote back to Leica Miami because the the camera combined with the s100mm lens was phenomenal!!! I originally wanted to get a phase one camera and I still might in the future but the output from the s line of cameras is just spectacular!! I hope you are able to get the s3

      Damn.. I want to read more of your comments but you said the two words I’ve always wanted to have, a Noctilux and Summilux. 😂one day I will have a real Leica Lens. I can only afford Elmarit 24-70 f2.8

    Hi Patrick, another great review, though I have to admit that I’m biased as I picked up a used SL a couple of years ago, mint, boxed for £1900 here in England and I love it. However, one of my photo journalist mates has a M10 which is giving me the range finder itch so I would greatly appreciate your views on the M240 from an image quality perspective. I shoot mainly using manual Voigtlanders, my favourite being the 40mm F1.2, sharp wide open and makes the SL very usable in low light. Your thoughts on how I’m likely to find the m240 images would be much appreciated… I’ll be keeping the SL in any case as it’s so versatile and the most joyful, high quality object I’ve ever owned. All the best from England, Marcus

    You do get autofocus with some adapters if adapting canon or nikon lenses.

    • @RentonVlogs
      @RentonVlogs  Před 2 lety

      Sorry, deleted my first response because I was thinking of the wrong camera. I thought your comment was for the Leica M240 that I did a video for (My mistake): Definitely, as time goes on I'm sure adapters have been made for this camera that allow autofocus with other non-Leica lenses. How well will that Auto-Focus function though, is another question. AF has never been a Leica strong point, even with the new SL2s it's still comparably (Nikon/canon/Sony) sub-par, so I'd imagine that the SL Typ601 with an adapter and Nikon/Canon lens works well enough, but isn't extremely reliable. But if you're chasing a certain aesthetic you could probably get some great visuals with the different lens combinations.

    I was reading that the 2.0 update increases the max shutter speed to 1/16000. This is really amazing for those super bright days and fast lenses. No ND filter needed. Also. Timed exposure increased to 30 minutes. I do think Leica cameras in general are overpriced but given the original price of 7500, picking up one for 2K or so is a nice deal. And who cares about video. Leicas are made to shoot photos, not for video.

      Yeah, I'm not sure what the firmware upgrades do but I'll take your word for it that you're 100% right with what you said above. The SL I used was the first iteration and firmware upgrades had not been released yet.
      I also ended up buying the SL2s (instead of the original SL shortly after I made this video) which is great, and definitely improves upon the video functionality of the camera... i''m still probably not going to use the video features much, if at all though (but I like that they are there). Also I slightly prefer the image quality of the original SL to that of the SL2s and still think the original is a fair price (used) for the types of images it can produce, but I definitely agree that the initial release price was extremely high.
      If you're curios i recently put out a video on the SL2s (linked above) with some sample Images in the description as well (A used SL2s is still like 4grand though, so It's a bit pricey and if you're only shooting stills then the SL TYP601 Is a better buy in my opinion)

    well... still ...for that price point one can get a better camera (brand)
