Why didn’t they back up against the door of the laser hallway? There is a few feet where the laser doesn’t reach and they would have only had to lose the medic, since she had no reflexes. The rest would have been fine against the door.

I totally cracked up laughing at 46:04 with Ian saying: "I don't recommend Resident Evil, only as a guilty pleasure for myself. Every now and again I may watch it. I don't know why. It's the same reason why I watch Dune and Silent Hill ... and not Tekken 2, no definitely not Tekken 2" - Lynch's Dune is my favourite film ever and Silent Hill is in my Top 10. Resident Evil (yes, this one) is in my TOP 20. I guess I only have guilty pleasures (no NOT Tekken 2, I am with you on that! But Tekken: Blood Vengeance is a whole different story!).

  • @clownprince88
    @clownprince88 Před 6 lety +4

I can see why people don't like these films but i love them , have since the first one , i was honestly blown away when i watched in the, theater, at the time it was one of the films that re ignited the zombie genre , probably the first one in a long time when it was released to feature the puss buckets in a mainstream film ( i could be getting the timing wrong but 28 Days Later came out later that same year to further cement the genre as popular and viable at the box office in modern times ) , and the genre just took off from there , all because of this adaption of the RE games .
Def see these films as more than simple zombie films, the undead are not the main antagonist, it's the Umbrella corporation and although the continuity is all over the place with the successive films i still enjoy the common thread of this mysterious and powerful company wreaking havoc on everything even as the world burning .
Anyway, this is one of my fave horror sci fi franchises , they are always entertaining, i stopped comparing them to the games early in the series and just enjoyed them for the silly bit of immensely entertaining trifle that they are . They always featured great action sequences, awesome music, cool characters, excellent visuals , i just can't help but like these films , they are like cinematic junk food , and i mean that as a huge compliment .
Afterlife is my favorite, that film is amazing and it's terrific in 3d
Yeah and the series is getting rebooted , it will most likely follow more closely to the mood and style of the games , can't wait for that but i'm more than happy with these adaptations .
ps - i'd like to know how the cast of this film watched Let's Plays of the games to prepare for their roles, YT wasn't a thing until around mid 2005 :D

Yknow, everyone loves to bash on the CGI of the movie. But it's kind of ironic that they even mentioned the middling graphics of the time RE2 was released, but then rag on the CGI of the time of the movie. I personally never had any issue with the actual CGI effects of the movie. What disappointed me was the overall scenes. Honestly I'm not sure they could've done it much better at the time given their budget and advancement of visual effects.

This first one almost, almost works as a prequel to the first game, if the games had taken place in the 2000s and not the 1990s that is, because you could come up with ways to connect it to sequels based on the actual games. But that was before the actual sequel to this one came out, which destroyed any chances of salvaging the live-action adaptations as being more faithful to the games. If you're judging these film adaptations as being based on the games, then I think this first one is the best in that regard. But that's not saying much because it isn't really fitting of the Resident Evil name. So it doesn't live up to the games as an overall piece.
If you're judging these films as action horror films, regardless of the fact it's called Resident Evil, then I feel that Resident Evil: Extinction is the best out of them all in that respect. But overall, all of these films don't live up to the name Resident Evil. So I am very much looking forward to the possibility that the reboot film series announced a couple of months or so back will be more faithful, and actually be horror suspense more than horror action.
And the ending shot of the film set up great potential but alas, that didn't end up being the case.

I never played any of the games before so I had zero frame of reference for it, but I can understand why the fans were appalled by the movie franchise.
The main characters also feel a bit two dimensional and the Slipknot soundtrack feels kinda dated too. However I still liked this movie for what it is: a cheesy, over the top, turn off your brain and break out the beers, comic book style action movie with plenty of fun moments.
Its probably one of my favorite movies to watch around Halloween next to "Dead Heat" and "From Dusk till Dawn".

  • @eduardo_corrochio
    @eduardo_corrochio Před 4 lety +2

Having never been much of a video game player, I came to this flick without any expectations; I just knew it was going to be slick scifi/horror, and it was completely entertaining stuff overall. But it is understandable that this film could be disappointing to fans of the games because you obviously go in with certain preconceived notions and with hopes of seeing particular elements ... but looking at "Resident Evil" as I did solely as a thriller, it is a fun ride. Not excellent, but enjoyable.
I feel similarly about another film based on games: the 2006 "Silent Hill" movie, although that won me over strictly with its visuals-- the rendering of that decrepit town was magnificently done, with so many fantastic details. In that film we had brilliant production design (along with some great ghastly creatures). The story and characters, on the other hand ... not so great.

I think people are too harsh on the RE movies. Yes they could have been more faithful to the source material. I'm not a screen writer so I have no idea how hard it would be to adapt the story into a movie but I think RE is among the easiest as the game plays pretty much like a movie for most of it if you were to change it so Chris and Jill never split up. Compared to most movie adaptations of video games RE is among the best. With a limited budget, time frame and executives who just wanted to make a few quid these movies could have been much worse. They do decline in quality but that's mostly because no one expected them to spawn so many sequels. The licker IS noticeably bad. I think they should have just had a tyrant be the monster or like you said a guy in a suit to play the hunter. The Matrix influences were a nice touch from the slow motion gunshots to the camera tracking the bullets, it's very Gun-Fu but they go a bit overboard turni g it from survival horror to action. I think the underground industrial music fits the movie really well giving it an upbeat intense feel especially during the action scenes but maybe that's because I'm a Manson and Slipknot fan. I agree with allot of you points especially about the lasers and the pointless relationship with Rain and JD and Umbrella not breifing the soldiers. I also think Spence was poorly written and is killed off 5 minutes after he is revealed to be the antagonist which is supposed to be a big twist but half the audience may have already had it spoiled for them at the beginning if you look at the door you can see him close it.

In my opinion, the umbrealla team should have been fully prepared for the infection. After successfully containing the virus, they try to leave realizing they’re stuck as well, and must find a way to break out, allowing the virus to spread. It wouldn’t have fixed all the issues with this movie, but would have highlighted the coldness of the company while also not insulting the audience’s intelligence.

You guys were making me laugh, by calling Matt Addison Max Payne. I would have love to seen the actor that play Matt, to play as Chris Redfield. I heard that Michelle Rodriguez was suppose to be the lead role in Resident Evil Movies but, unfortunately that conflict got scrapped.😒😒😒😒😒😒 If any Resident Evil Fans want to watch Resident Evil Movies, go watch the CGI ones.

When I first saw the poster for a Resi Evil film.. I was ecstatic.. at the time I was still blasting my way through RE2 & 3 on my PS1 because damm them games still top bollk in my books.. yes it had cheesy lines but it still rocked , so I went to the cinema with my nephew who i gave nightmares because of the amount of hrs we smashed on RE2 at like 3am haha, 20yrs on and he still don't really forgive me for.. but anyway we both walked out at the end and our reaction was like....... Wtaf did I just pay to see...
Take away the RE name tag and yes it's not a bad zombie film.... But to give it the RE name in my opinion is just criminal.... there's no Chris, Jill, Barry or Wesker ffs and W.S.Anderson should have played the game more or got capcom involved and just stuck to the mansion with the zombies, dogs, Hunters, maybe the shark and killer plants oww & of course the tyrent that's a boss. Not a glorified Licker ffs 🤨
Don't get me started when the next film came out because dammm. I almost lost my $hit.. but I'll save my comments for that commentary from you guys haha...

Great review as usual but I laughed my ass off when Ian said this movie made it possible that Resident Evil 4 was made and got popular.
Resident Evil games started to go downhill after Resident Evil 5. Before that, we had Resident Evil Code Veronica with a great story and you had already freaking matrix-like action sequences.
Then we had the best Resident Evil game, Resident Evil Remake on Gamecube. Shinji Mikami the father of Resident Evil series then made the great Resident Evil 4. The gameplay alone was revolutionary and created a standard for all the successful 3rd person action-oriented games. Without RE 4 we would not have had Gears of War or Mass Effect. So NO Mr. Buckingham RE 4 was a masterpiece and it wasn't thanks to this garbage movie.
46:37 The reaction of Gary sums up the feelings of most of the fans.

Ahh you do realize Silent Hill was a third person game way before RE4 right? Not to mention Mass Effect was already in work before RE4, when RE4 was being worked on ME was already being worked on too. So sorry to burst your little bubble, RE4 is amazing but didn't change anything for third person it just completely changed how Resident Evil games would be played moving forward, don't get me wrong I love RE4. But yeah RE4 in no way needed a movie to be amazing.

I know its hard to do research but maybe instead if bursting my bubble, come out of your bubble and check some facts.
      Facts:
1.Resident Evil 1 was released 1996 and Silent Hill 1999. (if you are a true fan as you think, Konami let team silent develop Silent Hill in response to success of RE 1). If you want to go even further Clock Tower 1 was a third person tank control game in 1992.
      2. Mass effect started development in 2004 while Resident evil 4 was released in 2005 so I don't see any relevance in that argument! what does that prove?
      3. Just research how the game influenced the third person behind the character shooter genre (is a sub genre by its own) in the 10 years after its release, lots of developers confirming they were influenced by this game specially the guy who made Gears of War series.
      4. Resident Evil movie was in development way before Paul WS Anderson came around, Geroge A Romero had written a draft in 1998. At the end Capcom decided to sack him and hired Anderson instead.
      5. Shinji Mikami the creator of the game was talking about going the action game route back in early 2000 just search for his interviews.
      6. The Game Cube version sold 1,6 million alone, it holds the record for "Best-Selling Survival Horror Game in the 2012 Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition. So the fact that you think the game was not special is just your opinion.
7,5 million people who bought the game so far, beg to differ.
So this movie did influence shit and maybe you should stay in your bubble with all this Covid-19 going on, stay save.

I'm not a fan of the games and know little about them. I love this movie, but I'm not comparing to the games when I watch. Yes, thecplot holes and problems are laughable. But overall, a VERY enjoyable experience.
