- In this video I had the honor of filming Alan Rockefeller, world class citizen mycologist and leading mushroom expert. He gave this talk on day 2 of the 2022 Costal Fungi Symposium near Oysterville, WA in late October of 2022. The lecture was given from a tent in the cold, but in my opinion one of his best talks ever.
Alan travels the world studying mushrooms of all types. He is a master with a microscope and an amazing photographer. His photos are featured as many of the main photos on Wikipedia. His name is all over modern day mushroom papers and he is a regular ID'er on Inaturalist with over 100,000 identifications.
He is immensely generous with his knowledge and just wants to share what he knows with the world and asked He will even tell you where his favorite picking spot is, down to the coordinates. The world is a better place because of guys like him.

Back in the 1970s I came across a patch of Psilocybe baeocystis. I was able to pick about 2 lb of them. I went downtown trying to trade them for $10 Grateful Dead ticket, but I had no success. I guess I had eaten about an ounce of them, and was feeling very good. They did not look like the typical psilocybin people were familiar with. I ended up giving away about 2 lb to the people waiting in line for the concert. I never did get into the show, but I had a great time standing near the stage door enjoying the music!

If you picked em fresh and didn't spend the time drying them out you gotta eat 10-12X the weight to have the same affect. 40 grams of fresh mushroom is about the same effect as 3.5 grams of dried mushrooms.

After doing some research on the psilocybin benefits, I honestly want to get into shroom microdosing but it's just so hard to get a reliable source. Really need!
Hey! Yes I'm very sure of Dr.benshrooms. what's helped me more personally is micro dosing. I don't take a lot at all I'll only eat a cap or two and I'm good for the entire day. It just helps to clear your mind and cleanse your soul. Very hard to explain... It's like trying to explain colors to a person who's never been able to see.
I've done microdosing for help and it works does cut depression out its been the best remedy I've ever had psilocybin been illegal is actually a crime against humanity

Love wild magic North American, especially PNW mushrooms. I learned to cultivate them outdoors, which I see becoming more popular in gardens in the future. Or even bringing them indoors. Alan I really appreciate your work. I've done some research on other psilocybes but some of these are still all new, and I'm sure there's plenty more to discover. As our society warms up to the psychedelic culture, there's just so much potential to come out of it!
When I got my horticulture certificate, I was shocked how much information involving mycology was left out. Mushrooms are commonly encountered and play a crucial role in healthy ecosystems and landscapes.

I know ovoids grow in my local wood's here in NE Tennessee, and suspect another similar species as well, but watching this I realize that there's very likely other's which I've found and not identified or did not realize contained psilocybin. There's some really cool fungi out there. I live in a shitty apartment just for access to the forest. Love the forest.
You probably have Psilocybe caerulipes in your area and a few of the psilocybin containing Gymnopilus species also.
Do you know if the ovoids come up to wv?been wondering herd they do but not sure where would you look for them at or how to tell the difference, found ones that look almost identical but didn't blue ,acual pinked some ,wasn't sure I didn't risk it
@@jimmystargel6203 They grow commonly in WV, closer to Ohio. They prefer floodplains of rivers and streams and grow near boxelder and Japanese knotweed. They rarely grow directly on logs, more commonly they'll grow out of mulch or the roots of boxelders. The cap tends to have a little knob, and if they're older will be wavy like cyans. The caps can also look greenish or blueish too. Bruising should always be blue but if you're unsure take a sporeprint, this should be purple. The best time to look is mid-April, and they're supposedly pickier about seasonality, though people have found them in the fall. I would go out and look in springtime after a good long rain.
After having so much experience with cubensis it's strange to see how few of the other psylocybe species have a pronounced veil or a veil at all. Cubensis usually take their time dropping the veil but all the pictures I've seen of wild north American ones they don't have them unfortunately although I've found plenty of flushes of what I thought might be psylocybe species while trekking around the Virginia woods none of them have bruised blue. I always wonder if you squish some of the blue onto your hand and lick it would that be like taking a microdose 🤔 some of the psilocin has to come out when you squeeze them.
I also live in NE TN and never thought I would ever be so desperate for relief from major depression that I would be willing to go hunting for mushrooms for relief. I'm that desperate.

A person in the audience asked whether _P. cubensis_ absolutely requires manure. I'm guessing they were interested in growing. In fact, most people who grow _P. cubensis_ do not use manure. They inoculate sterilized grains, then introduce the colonized grains to a mostly non-nutritious bulk substrate mix consisting mostly of coco coir that has been pasteurized and hydrated. The grains provide most all the nutrition, and the coco coir provides some structure for the mycelia.

My favourite part of psilocybin mushrooms is that they are free. I’ve saved so much money that I would’ve usually spent on weed or even alcohol. All it take is a 10 minute walk to find them growing in the right season

THe _P. azurescens_ probably need another couple weeks at least. It just recently started raining, and had been dry and unseasonably warm.

Trying to update people on CZcams that maybe can't get around to checking areas or possibly don't know as much information. Have you heard of microclimates? Maybe a cove or area that has more moisture might produce a fruit or two? Nah that could never happen! Keep googling for info instead of actually exploring and experiencing the outdoors.

I have never met Alan, just an amazing and very helpful person when I needed identification for a mushroom I found, turned out to be P. alenii.

Baeos were my first psilocybe I ever found. After finding them once that year they were everywhere, in lawns, under bushes, on woodchips. And I believe the trips were the strongest I usually ate like 5 small mushrooms. This was over 10 years ago though and I haven't found more than 2 tiny baeos since. However 10 years later that patch was still active.

Oh yea Allen i have found a P. Azurescens at the bottom of a steep slope by a stream in a residential area of Renton Washington. I know it sounds weird. It was all by itself.
Alan is obviously an authority on fungi, but I would never feel comfortable picking in the wild myself. I would love to observe fungi in the wild with a solid mycologist
Enigma is a mutant. I worked on a cubensis for a while, I only worked with it's spores. I was selecting for darker caps & bluing also for more stocky mushrooms. I ended up getting some conjoined twins & working with them. After a while I was getting more in each tub. After that I started getting puffballs & big clusters all stuck together with no caps. Those clusters then started to fan out looking just like enigma. I've almost had every mutant you can imagine from just one strain. The only mutant I didn't get was an albino lol.
I actually tried a nigma for the first time a couple days ago very potent lasted a long time

a side by side comparison of the deadly Galerina and the wood lover Psilocyb would be amazing. I'm really hoping to find some this year where in at in NW Washington. I'm gonna be looking really soon and I'm also a bit worried about galerina, too my understanding the main way to tell them apart is the galerina's rusty brown spore print and lack of bluing reaction.

@@thebrodybiss1466 True, you can tell them apart that way, definitively.
Also, once you've held a confirmed _P. cyanescens_ or relative ( _allenii,_ _azurescens,_ _subaeruginosa,_ ) in your hands, you won't confuse them if you're at all observant. They feel different; wood-lover Psilocybe have relatively rugged little fruits. They are a different color. The hygrophanous caps of those Psilocybe are distinctive. The stipes look different. They just don't look alike, except superficially.
When I've found _Galerina_ in wood chip beds, almost always they've been fruiting on a chunk of branch -- right on a larger chunk of wood than those wood-lovers will.
Thanks🍄🤙 I posted a video last year about Galerina growing amongst the native Psilocybe pelliculosa and it was deemed "dangerous" and was removed. The only 'warning' on my channel😕 seemed to me to be a valuable piece of information. 🤷
When will Alan release a field guide/book?
I need to figure out how to get bacteria to transfer the psilocybin gene cluster to my toenails. They grow so fast and thick I clip em every week. I could grind em up and use them as seasoning for cooking.😄
I've been studying/hunting magic mushrooms as a hobby for over forty years and when it comes to knowledge of psilocybin containing species, Alan is the best Imo. One of the nicest and humblest experts also.

I had a great book on them one time. There were also mosses that grew out of trees that were trippy. Anyone ever used any of these? Or the one called big and little laughing johns? Ones big ones little both look the same.

Great video on the subject. I have been looking for Psilocybe in North Carolina to dismal results. I’d like to try it for alcohol addiction. There’s great work being done in Oregon currently. Although at the moment it not being called therapeutic.
Have you used him. It seemed legit. But it is very scary being my state considers possession a class one felony and at my age federal prison is not something I would want. You know it’s like taking a big chance in hopes of some relief. I hate that the US is so far behind. Oregon is getting there.

If you're confident about that, and you find it again, pick some fruits and dehydrate them. And then contact Alan. Pretty sure he would be interested in having a look.
I've been told there are no species of the Psilocybe genus that grow in Utah. As he was listing species growing at higher altitudes in Colorado, Arizona, etc., I was eagerly awaiting mention of some from my neck of the woods (pun intended, ha).

I found one or two in my aunts backyard in w.v that looked exactly like the allenai, bruised kinda bright purple on the bottom of cap and more of a brownish cinnamon color print but i couldnt verify so i tossed it all
