Shaq could run in prime, better than most other centers. It's not like he was this clumsy tank, he was actually very agile for the weight that he had and could run very fast, that's what made him so great.
Candace’s list was about today’s positionless NBA with today’s rules. Prime Shaq would not fit into today’s NBA. Shaq could not shoot the 3. Barkley has mentioned this. Dwight Howard has discussed how the role of the big man has changed and that he had trouble fitting in after 2010.
Using today’s rules and 3 point shooting percentage (over 30%), the top big men for today’s game (who have an NBA title) would include (in no particular order); Jokic, Lambeer, P. Gasol, Brook Lopez, Kevin Durant. Giannis is almost up there.

You won't be able to play small team against him and the main objective of the opposing team would be not letting Shaq get the ball near the basket or just fouling him all game and getting into foul trouble
Others would have to adjust to Shaq not the other way around. He would slow down the tempo for the run & gun teams, he would generate a ton of 3pts for his team out of double teams.
Between off the screen, off the dribble, semi contested 3pt and Shaq near basket, I think Shaq is more efficient + the rebounds and paint protection. Good paint protection makes the perimeter protection in general easier too anyway.
He would just demoralize opposition, since there is not much that can be done against him.
I think he would change the game if he would play nowdays, because teams would be forced to look for strong giants on their team to stop him
@@al3ksejkramaric you don’t stop 2000 Shaq today. You get him into foul trouble. With today’s no touch rules, what Shaq did in 2000, pushing people out of position or elbowing them in the face, would be an offensive/flagrant foul today.
Rodman got Shaq in foul trouble in the 1990s. With today’s rules, lots of players could do it.
Second, do the hack a Shaq. Put him on the line. When Shaq today gets 1 free throw point, the other teams gets 3 points because Shaq could not defend the 3 leaving sharp shooting big men, like Jokic, wide open.
Third, there are several strong big men in Euro league basketball. But they cannot shoot the 3 and they are not in the NBA. Same problem with Shaq.

EVERYBODYS top 5 has either Shaq, Wilt, or Kareem.
Garnett is arguably the best and most versatile defender ever. He had the athleticism and motor to guard anyone from Iverson to Shaq. KG is the better competitor, more selfless, cares less about touches and stats, and gives more consistent effort. Most of you casuals don’t even remember prime Garnett on the Wolves from 2000-2005. Fate of the universe on the line against 5 aliens at the park, I’m 100% taking Garnett over Shaq.

Y'all sleeping on KG being part of a TEAM. As switchable a big man as there ever was, defensive anchor who can guard paint AND switch onto perimeter players. Pick and pop player who doesn't need (or even cares about) having the ball. The list was not all time best at each position, the list was all time TEAM.
Tim/Hakeem may be better options to have more paint presence while still having versatility... But nothing wrong with picking KG in a modern team.
KG isnt even in the top 20 of all time. we arent sleeping on him, we just understand basketball

It's not just about how high in the all time rankings a player is when making a team list. A team of Kareem, Wilt, Shaq, Bill Russell and Duncan would be terrible, even though they're all top 10 players. Team fit matters.

1. He's a better floor spacer. Not like modern 3 point shooting bigs but definitely more comfortable playing that role than say Shaq. Having a big that is comfortable spacing and playing in the mid range instead of the post would open things up for Kobe, MJ, LeBron.
2. He's an all timer who doesn't need the ball in his hands all the time to be effective/is happy to play off the ball. These kind of players get a bump up in my eyes when making these teams. Guys that have shown they are happy to be secondary options on a great team. E.g. Klay Thompson is not a better player than Dwyane Wade, but on an all time team I might just pick Klay for his shooting if I'm also taking Magic Johnson for example. I hope that makes sense. Would Shaq be happy if he only got 10 post touches a game? KG wouldn't care. It's a hypothetical but something I do take into account.
As you can tell I am a believer that the current playing style of the NBA is an evolution of the style played in the 90s. Spacing and shooting are very important to me.
3. Totally agree he would not be as effective a paint defender as the other bigs. He's not as physical. I even said that in my original post. BUT I firmly believe that KG's defensive VERSATILITY is as good as there ever was. In his Wolves days they'd stick him on opposing point guards sometimes. So yes I would be willingly sacrificing paint protection with switchability and versatility. It's kinda like choosing prime Draymond over prime Gobert on defense. Gobert is so much better as a typical big defender, shot blocker etc, but Draymond provided versatility that Gobert didn't. But I have ZERO bad things to say if you want your big to be the best paint defender possible and take Tim instead. On a team with good defenders everywhere (Steph aside) I personally would value versatility higher.
To end: I never said KG was the BEST pick either. My all time starting 5 would prob be Hakeem. But every time I think about this exercise KG is someone I think I would want on my bench over other bigs higher on my all time list. That's why I originally commented that the KG pick is not as crazy as everyone makes it out to be.
