Today the Microfreak Controls the Volca Keys! Right before filming this video, I realized I'd never used the Microfreak to control any external gear, so I decided to give it a shot. Thankfully, the process was basically painless, and I was left with the almost endless possibilities of the Microfreak combined with the analog power of the Volca Keys. While it might not have been the best video, I had a lot of fun! Enjoy the video :)

Never a failed video if you teach/demonstrate something new to a viewer and this combo of synths was totally new to me. Thanks!

The Microfreak routinely takes over as the keyboard for my synths. There's just something about the capacitive keyboard that is so much fun. They also double as a great set of drum pads in a pinch when using a midi drum machine.

MIDI was basically invented by Dave Smith and Chet Wood of Sequential Circuits in about 1981, and was accepted as a standard in the very early ‘80s, with the first commercial products to use MIDI following almost immediately in 1982.

You should try the arp/sequencer on the micro freak controlling the Keys:)

I bought a MicroFrek because it looked and sounded fun and weird and it wasn't expensive. I found I could put its output through my Deluge which lets me give it some reverb or delay. Whilst I kind of did expect to do that, one thing I did not expect is how capable a MIDI controller it is! Even though I have a Keystep I usually use the MicroFreak now for MIDI input into Ableton Live. :-)

Yes really enjoyed that one. Love gears combo. MF sequencer / arp next?

  • @frevrix

Awesome! I’m so glad you made this video because I’ve really been debating between getting a Microfreak and something that…how do I put this…sounds better, like a Volca FM2…but seeing as you can control another synth with it, I’m sold! Can you do a video using the arp/sequencer from the microfreak with another synth?

My favorite midi controller! I’d love to see you use some mpc one synths with the Microfreak MPE aftertouch stuff

Can microfreak arp control external gear?

  • @losinsolitos4127

Hello Great video, can I use the doremidi usb mid host to connect a Volca keys with an Akai LPK 25? Thanks

I find it insane that the MicroFreak has a 3.5 MIDI instead of a 5 pin, when the rest of their equipment is 5 pin.

I can hear sound on mine but it's getting cut off intermittently. If I just press with my fingertips on the Arturia, it's really faint but gets really loud if I flatten my fingers. It's really inconsistent. Any idea why?
