The reason we only got one song, Right Turn, from an ALICE IN CHAINS + SOUNDGARDEN compilation was because of this: During the recording session the sheer force of energy that was produced when L. Staley & C. Cornell occupied the same space was so strong, so powerful that it almost reached critical mass & split the atom.
Right before the last notes were recorded J. Cantrell noticed a strange aura of blue/white electricity envelope the studio as K. Thayil became aware of the heavy, ionic disturbance that indicated a dangerous level of Bad-Ass radiation they had not prepared for! Cornell & Staley should have been separated in their own lead-lined chambers but, it was too late, they had overlooked this & now the entire western U.S. was in danger.
But, as Cantrell & Thayil were just becoming aware of the danger, M. Cameron, super-stud drummer, let out an involuntary "Noooooooooooooo" as he leapt from his drum throne toward the main power outlet, together w/S. Kinney grabbed the bundle of cords sending electrical current to the studio & yanked them clear from the outlet just in time to avert disaster.
After realizing what had occurred, the members of both bands + Mark Arm agreed they couldn't attempt this again, it was just too dangerous. Technology was not advanced enough to harness & control the amount of Bad-Ass energy created when these Grunge gods got too close to one another.
So, in order that mankind would not be destroyed we only got one song from the AliceMudGarden session.
    True fucking story.

Michael Stipe's (REM) speech (at the end of the video) most closely and poignantly captured the essence of what that grunge era was like and how personally it resonated with so many disenfranchised people who were tired of the system. He wrote the song "Let Me In" for Kurt after his passing. It addresses his regret that there wasn't anything he or the world could do to stop what would eventually culminate to us all losing Kurt. It is a powerful song. Stipe was actually due to collaborate with Nirvana on a new record that Kurt said would be a change in direction from the raw guitars of their previous records. Something ethereal and softer with acoustic sounds. Stipe says they had it all set up and a plane ticket ready but Kurt cancelled and shortly after, he was dead.

I remember only listening to 60, 70s rock and I was in 7th grade when grunge started and was like " what is this?". But it was good. Two songs specifically that take me back instantly like a time portal is
1- Bulls on parade- Rage against the machine
    2-Black hole Sun- SOUNDGARDEN
I remember exactly where I was at and what I was doing and my reaction to hearing each one, I was like 😵 what is this 🤘🤘🤘😎😎💯.

I love Nirvana but actually had to pull my car off the road when Pearl Jam finally broke. Was still waiting for the stations to get into Soundgarden at that time.

As a side note there is another vocalist that implemented the "yarl" as it's kinda become known that was way before Lane. Go listen to some old George Jones and you'll hear something similar. I have no idea if it influenced his vocal style or not, but I'd be surprised if Staley had never heard "He Stopped Loving Her Today" before he began singing.

Punk started in England but was very big in New York, then Grunge came up on the West Coast, and took root in Seattle. But this is why it was such a powerful, transformative wave: because it came up at the same time as the dot com boom and in every way paralleled it. It rode to great heights on that concurrent wave. Now people weren’t wearing suits to work but were dressed down, relaxed, and an entire social Revolution was taking place. Grunge came up after the economic recession of the ‘80’s, when it seemed, in the 90’s, that the “power of culture and self determinance” could be given more to the people, largely because of the Internet, rather than to the “puppet masters” of society, and so the grassroots passion was very strong. Everything we realized up until 2016 to some degree, was spawned in the Grunge movement.
