- The Lab LDN is Mixmag and Coors’ weekly live stream, powered by Void Acoustics, where we showcase the finest DJs direct from our world famous office party. Tim Reaper’s quick run to the top has landed him with some impressive accolades. Only recently blown-in to the hardcore scene from the Lobster Theremin circle, Reaper has found no problem breaking off into his own musical sphere. 2020 saw Reaper release his debut EP on the LT imprint just shortly after the launch of his own label, Future Retro Underground.
The UK-based jungle producer is now working with London’s most talented and eclectic underground of hardcore, footwork, drum ’n’ bass, and jungle artists, most recently alongside the likes of SHERELLE, Special Request, Mr Sensi, FFF, and more.

There’s always been breaks and proper tunes. Just many in DnB wanted to be on Radio 1 playlist and Hospital etc. Meanwhile you had Breakage, Equinox, Paradox, Naibu, Dub One and many doing riddim. It’s those who wanted to be in Fabio / Grooveriders box who fell by the wayside

Quick easy lesson:
European hardcore was pretty much entirely 4 to the floor kicks and generally harder, British hardcore before the 94 split was a blend of 4 to the floor kicks AND breakbeats. However in the early days DJs incorporated both European and British styles into sets.
In the same way that you can't add the prefix 'acid' to house, without first having house music, then you can't have happy hardcore without its precursor which we called hardcore in the UK. (Jungle-Tekno was another sub-strain). This hardcore is the daddy of happy hardcore and jungle, and the granddaddy of D&B.

Yes Dan, great to see, jungle/DnB got killed dramatically years ago by fck'n major label and Hospital Records in particular for rampant out commercialised muck.... same happened to house too back in 96/97 but to degree came back too when it went back underground and the major labels fck'd off to another genre, unfortunately that was DnB 😠🙄😎✌️
@@fcunitedforever8677 Genuinely though...for all the Fred V's and Danny Byrds Hospital has also released hundreds of killer tunes. You can sit in the corner moaning and talking about genres but in the end music (especially dnb) is there to be enjoyed. Who really gives a f if Hospital is more accessible than the London grimy basement parties.

@@thebassconnection7226 yes indeed, I only really listen 92-93/94 Jungle and D&B from 94 to late 90's, back when we had seasonal D&B especially winter when the dark came, pure magic..... said to see that so many 1st and 2nd gen DJ/artists have packed in totally or moved on... Holy cr@p! Last weekend I've been to a drum&bass night, nice small setting. I never have been into drum&bass and I'm not familiar with the artists etc. I found the first two dj's kinda boring, I only heard a baseline with drums for two hours. Then Tim Reaper came on the stage, I did not know him. He showed everyone that night the definition of a real real really good dj. He killed it!
I've been to techno and house parties for the last 20 years, but seeing skilled dj's at work like Tim Reaper was rare for me. I'm glad I was there that night, another hero on the list.

@@habitualline-stepper8218 you get a lot DJs today heaving their hands about and trying to hype the crowd. I just remember DJs in the 90s just concentrating deeply on the mix. DJs today try to be showman but not on the decks. Watch some of the Tomorrow World festival DJs and you will know what I mean. I think one reason because most of us play on CDJs now so it is easy to mix.

modern DnB is largely too sanitized and has lost the grit that Jungle always had. Some new DnB is still great, but there's a lot of over-polished soulless crap too. Gimme the rolling breaks of Jungle all day.
