  • Good day everyone. This Sunday's chat is focuses on those who are starting to use a safety razor for the first time, perhaps changing from years of using a cartridge razor. I've had a few comments recently about razor burn and I thought to share my thoughts with you.
    I announce the winner of a giveaway that was offered in the previous Sunday sit-down. Well done to the winner.

    Strangely(or luckily)I have never had an issue with razor burn using DE or SE razors. Even when I was a rank beginner I managed to muddle my way through with a minimum of discomfort but being true to form and always ODD...when I used a electric razor that is when I got irritation and I recall those devices as supposedly being the least irritating as far as the commercials and print ads claimed.
    But I must say, I wish your channel and Sunday Sit Down Chats were around when I started. It would have been delightful to have a Authentic Mentor around. I hope all the newbies(regardless of their calendar age)are paying attention. This Channel is a Great Resource .

      You're right! I forgot about stints in my thirties with electric razors. They gave me razor burn and irritation and a poor shave. My dad used an electric for years - he obviously new what he doing.
      I'd just like to thank you for your kind words Keith, they were unexpected and very much appreciated. It is very nice to get positive feedback, from all the guys/girls that write. To be honest, I couldn't do it without that support; the channel seems to be a very positive environment. So thank you, everyone who reads this. 😃👍

    What a great video Mark, i wish youtube was around when i first started with my Gillette Classic, i always liked my classic and it gave such a nice shave, smooth and mild. When i moved to straights in the mid 1990s i did use the internet to help but found a really complicated beard mapping and stroke direction guide which was hard to stick to so I went with what felt comfortable. As you say practice is key! Best wishes Andy

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  Před 8 měsíci

      That beard mapping information is useful, to a degree, but I'm grateful I have a rather easy growth pattern; I'm not sure I would stick with it. What feels comfortable is best. Perhaps that could be a useful catch phrase for my videos.😃 Take care.

    Good talk Mark. My facial hair grows down, left side of neck grows left to right, from the 8 o'clock position to the 2 o'clock position and the right side of neck just the opposite of the left side. So in essence thinking like head hair, the 'crown' is my chin, Adam's apple is the natural parting of the hair and face is like the hair on the back of the head. It's not unusual when thinking in those terms. Most people's head hair grows in different directions, it can be the same for the face.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks J.R. It really took me a long time to start to take any notice of the direction of growth. I like way you compared it to your head hair. It makes perfect sense when you think of face hair growth in that way. Cheers 👍

    Mark, so much enjoy your channel, especially the Sunday sit-downs.
    Today your suggestions for new de shavers were spot on. I am 70 years old. I started shaving with my dad's hand-me-down electric shaver. I experienced a lot of razor burn on my neck so I switched to cartridge shaving. At the age of 38, I grew a full beard and kept it until January of last year. At that time a sudden serious heart problem was discovered, resulting in an emergency visit to hospital's intensive care unit and immediate installation of a pacemaker. Was told that without that intervention I would likely have died of sudden heart failure! Upon my return to home, for some unaccountable reason, the idea of changing my appearance popped into my head. I decided to shave my full beard into a mustache and goatee. I used a hair clippers to trim down the long hair of my beard and ordered a well rated Panasonic electric shaver. In about six months I lost the recharging unit on a holiday to London (my 1st ever journey to your fare ilse). Rather than replacing the lost unit, I decided to go back to wet shaving. To my huge surprise, cartridge razors were now so expensive, which in turn, made me think of the old safety razor I remember my dad using when I was a boy. At this point in time I didn't even know if that type of razor and blade were still being made, let alone absolutely nothing about the new movement of de shaving. But it didn't take long to discover through my reearch on CZcams that a de revolution was taking place. I had never heard of three pass shaving nor had any idea there was a whole world of artisan products available. After much research, my first purchases were an Edwin Jagger 89 razor, Proraso shave cream, and Proraso bore bristle bush. I was hooked with the first shave...to be continued in Part II, if you wish to hear the rest of the story.

      Thank you very much for your message. Yes please, I certainly would like to read part two. I hope you are well, these days. It is quite strange but a near death experience with meningitis, a long time in intensive care and poor health afterwards started me on the journey of shaving with a safety razor. There must better ways to get started 😃 You picked some great products to start with.

    Excellent discussion. I had an experience a bit like yours with early razor burn. I started out with a Merkur 23C and the Merkur blades that came with it (so a very mild razor and a not so sharp blade). After awhile of this, I pulled an Astra blade out of my sample pack, and I must have developed the habit of using too much pressure with my original setup, because the Astra blade left me with a spectacularly smooth shave and a bad case of what felt like sunburn. Learned my lesson though!

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  Před 5 lety

      That's a nice explanation of how a mild razor/blade can lead to burn when you switch. That must have been what happened to me, although I can't remember what the blade was. Perhaps that's why I don't like Astra's 🙂

    In the beginning I did not know or understand that concept. But now that I have been using safety razors for almost a year now. I have a much better experience and getting a better technique and now even though I don't get a BBS but I settle for a smooth and irritation free shave. BBS happens sometimes but not often. Thank you Mark for this great video it is very helpful specially for the newbies out there. Another thing the blade choice makes a big difference in your shave using the sharpest blades doesn't necessarily equal a great shave.

    Mark, this is great information for the new shaver and reminder for the rest of us. I have never had a good shave with a cartridge. After switching to DE there was definitely a learning curve and rabbit holes to chase around. I found 3-4 blades that work well in all of my razors and a razor that out performs the rest. Stopped chasing the BBS and stop at 2 passes now. I reach for the Palmolive stick and Tabac more often than the rest. Developing this combination of razor/blade/soap over the last few years has been fantastic and there was definitely influence from these videos (Another Cut Above-mentioned Karve and Flash Boredoms gift of the Palmolive). This is a great hobby and great community. Thanks for your influence.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  Před 5 lety

      It's strange but I had good shaves with a cartridge except if I had a few days growth to take off. That was bad. I find it interesting that Gillettes own research into cartridge razors has led them to 'about turn' and produce the two blade 'Face Guard'. The dreaded Tabac 😉 Palmolive is under rated I think, particularly in the stick form which is super slick. I try to have a lot of variety, in the videos but if not for them, I'd only have a few soaps and I'd definitely have a Palmolive stick. Anyway, only another 30 comments to reply to. Thanks for taking part and for being a part of our community. Take care, Matthew.

    Good tips for beginners. My mistake starting out was using the same soaps I used before DE, which were mainly hand soaps. I could manage with hand soaps when using disposable razors since I only shaved with the grain. My brother introduced me to shave soaps which are meant to be used with a shave brush and that helped stop the irritation I got when first using safety razors.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  Před 5 lety

      You owe your brother! I'll bet there are a few people have used hand soap initially. If you've never used a shaving brush and you just haven't seen shaving soap, I can understand how you would use hand soap. You don't see shaving soap in the shops very much. Thanks Mark for your Sunday sit-down chat. I still consider myself a beginner when it comes to shaving with a safety razor. I was advised to use a little pre-shave oil before starting to apply the soap. This helped prevent me from cutting myself or just giving myself too close a shave. Although I have tried many soaps I find the easiest to get along with as a newbie was a Palmolive stick. Not just because it is the cheapest shaving soap in the shops but the razor glides beautifully through the lather when the stick is applied. Blades I avoid include Feather and Derby. The nicest blades in my opinion, and I know it's very razor dependant, are made by Treet. I don't think I've ever cut myself with a Treet blade. Nor do I experience any of the razor burn with them. As you rightly say, everyone will give different advice. The above are more observations from personal experience rather than advice to others. Great to see you on a Sunday, even if your coffee cup was empty. Have a good day mate!

    Thanks, Mark. I just ordered a 1939-40 Gillette Tech on your recommendation and look forward to using it.
    I would just add to your today tips one you gave in the recent past, which was quite valuable: when a razor is too aggressive, say when shaving against the growth, it makes sense to lean a larger portion of the cap on your face to bring the blade closer to parallel with your skin. I'd known this in the abstract for years, but for some reason your saying it made it sink in. For some reason the phrase "find the right angle" never registered in the same way. I go as far as to start from a point where the blade isn't even touching me, then reduce the angle to where it just does. The result is a closer shave with nary a nick (which is my problem as opposed to razor burn). So thanks for that earlier advice as well as that of today.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  Před 5 lety

      Oh heck! I hope you like it 🙂 I used mine yesterday and had an irritation free very close, smooth shave and while I could have shaved today, I've hardly anything there so I haven't bothered today. I think you'll like it and the fat handle is a great size for me.
      I'm glad my tips work 😃 It makes sense, to me anyway, starting with the blade off the skin. If ever I use a razor I'm not sure about that's what I do, every time. All the best for the week, even though it's half over. Cheers.

      It arrived today and I gave it a go even though it was my second shave of the day. Marvelous! What's more, it's obviously what inspired the Feather AS-D2 I've been using for years. Viewed from the side, their cap and safety bar profiles and blade angles and exposure are indistinguishable, and the differences will be a joy to explore. The AS-D2 is built like a tank, which is paradoxical for a razor this mild. It also sacrifices the Tech's maneuverability. having no overhang, which lengthens the head by a good .25 cm. (I've often wondered why, at this price, Feather didn't manage to taper the head design so as to remove the surplus surrounding the blade's edge.) All told, I figure it'll be like switching from a Buick to a Honda Civic, though one could as readily call the Fat Handle Tech a poor man's AS-D2. Its finish is yellow and red brass, which I hope is not high maintenance but it looks great for now. I may want to go to the alum bar to enhance the grip till I'm used to it (h/t Nick Shaves), but it's going to be fun to use. Rest assured that you steered me in the right direction, Mark. Many thanks.

      A second shave of the day! Oh my goodness - you've got it bad 😃 I'm glad you bought a razor that you like very much. It is a great shave.
      The heads are very much alike, in design although I get a much more efficient shave with my Fat Tech and I can feel the blade a little more; I find the WS-D2, which I believe is the same head, on a different handle to be too mild a shave. I'll bet the Tech suits a Feather blade! Thanks got letting me know Warren. I really appreciate your comments. Have a great day, buddy.

      Even after one shave I see what you're talking about. I call it "road feel."The Tech has it over the Feather. Also over Gillette's TTOs. I'm looking forward to using the Tech for a good while. Once a day from hereon out! ;) You have a great day, too!

    Great video and advice Mark. I’ve started walking my own path when it comes to my shave. It took me ages to go against the grain and even now sometimes I can and sometimes I can’t. 👍🏻💈

      Just like myself, David. I've only found one razor that I can go ATG on my face with discomfort or making myself bleed but I still prefer not to and I absolutely cannot do ATG on my moustache area! Everyone finds there own way if they are able to stick with it long enough. Cheers.

    Thank you so much for this video. I've watched probably a dozen of your videos and recently subscribed.
    I bought my first safety razer about 6 weeks ago and have been enjoying shaving with it but still encountering problems here snd there and the insistance of many shaving videos that you do many passes is something I have started to question.
    I am only going to shave downwards for a while on my face and see how that goes and only upwards for my neck line.
    I also shave my head completely twice a week and I have to say that head shaving is a lot easier.
    I appreciate that you have taken he time to help people who are unsure or who have watched far too many online tips and things have become confusing or impractical...as they have for me.

      Good day, Dale. Thank you for getting in touch. I'm glad my video provided some thoughtful points to consider and seemed to tie in with your own thoughts of doing too many passes. For myself, enjoyment and comfort are key to my shaves but it took me a while to get to where I am.
      Good luck with shaving in a downward direction. It will certainly give you a good base to start from and allow you to introduce other directions, if needed and allow you to compare/judge the effectiveness of those. Kind regards - Mark

    Thanks for doing this video- it will certainly aid a lot of shavers. I am fairly new and have watched a multitude of videos- and as you mentioned a lot of people cut themselves on the 3 pass whenever trying to get the last already half/cut hairs. I do think it is very important to try to avoid cutting once face and also trying to avoid unnecessary irritation or worse: ingrown hairs. I think there is nothing wrong with aborting a shave that is not going well , change razor, blade or just grab a cartridge and finish the shave... . I am still in the experimenting phase, trying different razors, blades, soaps, aftershaves etc....and I do believe it is a very nice hobby. I still have not tried Feather blades nor the Muhle 41 that I have had for 2 months... So far I like my Merkur adjustables, slants and as you said, Muhle R89 Grand. This can turn into an addiction....but as long as it doesn't interfere with the rest of our lives....then it's all good! Cheers

      Thank you for your comment. It is good to know that you found a lot in my video to agree with. For me, comfort is the key to enjoying a great shave; it's one of the reasons I shave in the evening, when I'm not in a hurry. I'll bet a lot of people cut themselves because they hurry their shave. My friend, I am still in the experimenting phase. There are so many razors and blades to try, not to mention soaps; aftershaves; brushes. It is a great hobby. We don't harm anyone except ourselves -but only on a very bad day 🙂 Take care.

    A slant is the best from the mechanical point of view, it cuts with ease so less irritations
    An adjustable is the best for multi pass shavers; why shaving w same aggression multiple times?

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  Před 5 lety

      Well, I prefer a non adjustable razor and tend to use my adjustable razors on one setting but you do make a good point about using an adjustable razor and adjusting the setting, as someone that's new to shaving with a safety razor.

    What blades would you recommend pairing with the R106?

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  Před 3 lety +1

      I've not found a blade that doesn't work well with it, Alan. Certainly mty favourotes all do. A sharp Feather or a softer Gillette 7 o'clock black. Astra green also works well for me.

      @@FriendshipShaving Recently bought the Wilkinson Sword D.E Razor( was only £10) , Porarso Green, Pre-Shave + Soap. Still perfecting the techniques 3 shaves in. The Mullhe seems to be an extremely popular razor, i've only tried the Wilkinson Sword blades, but I've ordered some Astra SP blades 👍.
      Keep up the good work with the videos, enjoy watching them... They're very therapeutic as well as being educational.
      We have 2/3 shaving shops in Glasgow where I live.
      (Porarso green btw... Smells absolutely amazing).

      Hey Alan. That is a good buy for £10 and a good razor to start out with. Mühle are indeed a popular razor. The Astra SP blades are well liked and most find them very nice. I would consider getting a sample pack of blades, from eBay. Just one or two of each blade and you'll soon see which has ones you like. Keep up the good work, pal and enjoy your shaves. Thanks for getting in touch. All the best.👍

    Great instructive video .
    Mark, I’ve been going along and watching your videos from 3 years ago. Your shave technique has really helped my own technique. I use a safety razor ( Gillette fat tech( yes, a brilliant razor that lets you clean up without cutting your self), or FT or BB and sometimes clean up with a cartridge razor ( I know, not a bright idea). This was video walks me through the process- my neck shave took me a year to find the map of my hair growth and not to go hacking about. For my first question, where can I purchase Barristan-Mann’s “ First snow” shave soap. I’m from New Mexico and with Covid, we weren’t allowed to visit as Covid restrictions. Secondly, Can you recommend a efficient but mild razor? Muhler (?) or maybe a Marvel razor? Or just stick with my 75 year old Gillette razor? Thirdly, what blade is the best for yourself? The astra stainless does great but for only 3 uses. Good day look forward to the next. Last question, what is your occupation? I don’t use Facebook.

      Hi, Prentiss. You have been with me, more or less, from the beginning of me making videos. Thank you; I'm very pleased that I am still able to put out videos that you still want to watch.
      I think First Snow, might be a seasonal release. An email to B&M would verify that but I also I found this website, that gives some alternatives.

      The Edwin Jagger DE89 is a very good razor. I like a resin handle, as it is slightly heavier and I feel this gives a better shave. However, the razors from Yaqi are very good indeed! Their Edwin Jagger styled head or the double open comb are great and the Flipside gives you a milder side and a slightly more aggressive side. I find them all to be excellent. Their prices are crazy! Drop me an email:
