THE PROBLEM WITH LONG TONES (and the solution)

  • How lucky the piano players who need never concern themselves with playing long tones. For brass players, long tones are a beneficial part of a practice routine that often get short shrift because they can seem boring, which diminishes their effectiveness and disincentivizes their use. The challenge then is to find a way to make long tones more interesting. I do that by coupling them with note bending, which is another practice technique that is often missing from a comprehensive practice routine. In this video I demonstrate the two different ways I combine note bending with long tones to improve pitch accuracy, consistency of airflow and more resonant tone quality.

OMG I thought it was just me. You explained perfectly what I experience trying to bend higher long tones, started to give up on them, wasn't seeing or understanding the benefits of bending notes. In the lower register I had no problem, after watching this video I'll resume bending the higher pitches in the 6/60 book.

Thanks for a great explanation and exercise! I’ve been using long tones to improve intonation - especially right from first attack, and I think that adding bends will help me “zero in” even faster.

Thank you very much for the video, I didn't think it was possible to bend notes so high in the register! I have something new to work on 💪
