On a trip to Europe I was with some Belgiums who asked where I was from and when I said SA they said sing us a song, I started the first line of Sarie Marais and to a man and woman they sang the rest of the song word for word. I was amazed and so stunned at the warmth they felt for the Afrikaner volk.
Cool. In 2017 we were at a SA family member's wedding in Brugge, Belgium. (She married a Belgium guy). We were only 6 South Africans at the wedding. At the reception they asked us to sing Sarie Marais for them, which we did, and they all join us in singing, and when finished with Sarie Marais one Belgium guy started to sing Bobbejaan Klim Die Berg, and once again we and the Belgians sang the song happy together. That was so awesome. If I can choose a Europe country to stay in, it will be Belgium.
In a tribute to the fighting spirit of the Kommandos during the Anglo-Boer War, Sarie Marais is the Commando March of His Majesty's Royal Marines. Despite his experience as a PoW during the A-B War, when Churchill wanted to mount lightning raids against German-occupied Europe, he raised a force called Commandos - a tip of his Hamburg hat to Jan Smuts his former enemy, who by that time in WW2 was a key member of Churchill's iner circle dedicated to beating the Germans. So, Sarie Marais is a revered marching tune in UK.
On a personal note, Sarie Marais always reminds me of the love of my life, a sweet, beautiful, blonde Afrikaner girl from my past. Yup, for me at least, she was the one that got away.
I live in Angus, Scotland. I was born In Nakuru, Kenya. I was at school in Eldoret, Kenya, Known as "64" to the many farmers in the area. I too can sing along to this song, as can many a Royal Marine.
It's amazing to see how the audience enjoys and sings it.... It seems that the Dutch and Boers have a really close bond. I wonder if Brits would sing the American or Canadian songs with a similar unison... With love to Netherlands and South Africa from Poland!
Sarie Marais is actually the Regimental Quck March of the Royal Marines so is heard in the UK (at least as a march). We have plenty of our own songs in the UK so we don't sing Canadian or American ones (they sing ours though since a lot of them came from here!)
My family is from South Africa, although I was not born there, I was raised with the music, stories, language. I heard Sarie Marais a lot in many different ways, especially when I was with my grandparents. My grandmother passed away last fall, Sarie Marais was played at her funeral. I always liked this song, but now it brings such an emotional burden. although my grandmother was 89 years old, I feel really lost since she left us. Thank you all, for posting this, for liking this. Ouma, ek is steeds lief vir jou, ek sal jou eer en onthou. hierdie een is vir jou
A HUGE South African song. Doesn't matter what cultural background one comes from, everyone I know from 'back home' loves and is moved by this beautiful song. It's also very popular elsewhere in the world having renditions performed by Jim Reeves, Helmut Lotti and the Royal Marines (to name just a few)...
My mother knows the words, which she learned from my grandfather. There was an uncle of him in 1900 in South Africa. I myself really love the song, and since I found it again, a few days ago, I play it every day. I think I feel well the emotions of the writer, and it's every time quite emotional to me, too. (excuse my bad English...)
Even a mouse will rear up and fight back when cornered. Thankfully we are more than mice. Ons is Boere. Hier op die veld en in hemel as ons moet. Met God en Toyota, natuurlik. Dankie vir die liedjie

The King Of Waltz:First, thanks for sharing this particular video(with us.) Just now,I watched it. On so many levels, this is awesome. Powerful and rousing song to close this concert on. I get the impression that it was kind of a nice surprise added to the program, and I think the crowd was a bit out of synch on the verses, although obviously all there for the choruses. From lip reading, the dark haired lady in the white top with blue trim (perhaps on her jacket?) was clearly singing the first verse the first time through (Mooi River) and the second verse the second time (Upington sand), but clearly not everybody was doing the same. But the exuberance and emotion of the crowd was wonderful to see.

As a Dutchman, it is a very wellknown song to us. We used to sing this song in primary school...nice to hear it!
