In this vlog I take the narrowboat through Newark-on-Trent and head to Cromwell lock, where the river becomes tidal. That would be my end point for this session of cruising videos before I stopped for winter. More videos will be forthcoming nonetheless.

Thanks for another great year of cruising videos David. I, and am sure many other people, really do appreciate all the hard work and effort you put into making them as it must take an enormous amount of time. knowledge and skill to produce an end product that is certainly as good, if not better, than anything the BBC has to offer. I look forward to more narrowboat videos in the spring, but in the meantime, I'm sure you have lots of ideas up your sleeve for the winter months including the fireside chats which have always been enlightening. Happy Christmas and a safe Covid free New Year.

When leaves, twigs or other organic substances fall into water and begin decaying, they release compounds known as surfacants. This interaction breaks the surface tension, which in turn allows air to more easily mix with water and creates bubbles. These bubbles congregate as natural foam.

I remember Cromwell Lock very well.
After being towed by a sand barge from Goole, The barge crew threw my stern rope at me and missed which landed in the water behind me. I was going at some speed into the lock wall. This was my second day at narrow-boating. I reversed and put all my stern rope through my propeller as I had no time to get it out the water.
I still hit the wall, nearly throwing my crew off the front deck. I was like a dead duck, in the lock with the sun just gone down and it pitch black, in freezing January with snow on the roof, cutting my stern rope free of my prop with a bread knife.
    And I still love boating

Those arches at the power station do indeed mean they use the river water. They use gas to make a fire, then use water to make high pressure steam. This steam then powers a steam turbine that drives a generator which creates the electricity. After passing through the turbine the steam is at low pressure and condenses back to water. A power station needs loads of water, which is why you'll always find them near large bodies of water.

Though I'm not certain if that's true. Anyway, your videos, cruising or not, are always quite entertaining. So feel free to take a much needed break from cruising. Besides you have to have already made well over 100 cruising videos. There's plenty of them for your viewers to revisit ⛵. thank you so much for sharing all your cruising videos. I've only recently started following the channel (a few months now) and I must say, this is one of the best things I've found on CZcams this 2020. ^_^ Hope you have a warm winter!

Coming off my five day, mostly sleepless marathon off stress and suspense with our elections, it was simply wonderful to bask in my now happy mood and sit back to enjoy this delightful journey. Thank you for all the calm and solace you provided me since I first discovered you early this year. You Sir, are a champion among men.

You and Foxes Afloat give these little snippets of history, which I greatly appreciate. I love history but I don’t always love trying to get through a 600 page book. ........thanks.

I'm not a fan of history but it's amazing how ten seconds on Google can boost a script ;-)

@@CruisingTheCut as long as you keep putting out these little bits of history it’s ok with me if you preface it with “and now for a tiny bit of BS history, and then I’m having a brew.”

Lovely trip. Thank you. Until March I went from Newark to Southwell once a month. The bus passes Fiskerton, but never had time to stop. Good to see it from the river for a change. Then often have a pizza and a pint on the Castle Barge on my way home. Recommended, especially on the top deck, with large windows to enjoy the river and passing boats. Look forward to seeing it all again in person next year. Thanks for sharing your travels.

Those "Dutch Barges" are beautiful. Best wishes for 2021. It will be a better year if people learn to behave better.

The power station is almost certainly a gas turbine(s), like a jet engine, so there is no steam to condense.

Many thanks for sixteen minutes of beautiful and peacful sanity after just working twenty six hours non stop in a very dark and dismal factory. I will now venture off to my bed and dream of the day I can retire and do as you are doing. Best wishes and thanks for sharing all your interesting travels with us land lubbers.
