When I was a young boy, Billy Graham had a religious advice column. He gave a woman a piece of advice that I will Never forgive him for. It was from a woman whose husband regularly beat her. He had been beating her for decades, and she was at the end of her rope. She said that she didn't know how she could go on living, that she had lost hope of her husband being less violent towards her, and that she had prayed for years without any help from God. She asked Billy Graham what she should do.
Did Billy Graham tell her to go to the police? Did he suggest she go to a woman's shelter?
No. He told her that she should endure, and continue to pray for her husband, as a supportive Christian wife should. That was his advice to this poor Christian who made the mistake of writing to him. I always wished that I could have somehow written to her and told her not to listen to this idiot's advice, and to escape immediately.
I'm sure she continued to make a fine punching bag for her husband, until she died of abuse or until he died, forever unpunished.
Without God ever intervening to help her. Or Billy Graham convincing her to escape her lifelong hell.
That is how Billy Graham deserves to be remembered. With utter contempt at his inhuman hypocrisy.

      Is this really true?
How long ago did this happen?
Also is it possible that given the prevailing social & legal precedents at the time it happened, that divorce or separations were looked upon as an option worse than enduring physical abuse in the hope of reformation of the abusive partner rather than a permanent break up of the family? A virtue of suffering over the vice of family destruction? Also can you really fault a man for not providing the advice of the current modern times rather than the prevailing advice of that time, if that were so then?

@Jazzkeyboardist1 There is a difference between giving to charity and giving to the church. The majority of churches don't open their books and when you look at these 'palaces' it is very evident that very little would go to their charities. What they would be giving to charity, they do it out of self-interest when they proselytize to the vulnerable. Look at Africa. I bet you give 100 dollars everytime when your local priest tells you to blow him. Good luck.

But then.... God stooped down in Christ to heal, restore, bring humanity back to origibal created value by His own blood, Spirit because of love.

And we all, with unveiled face, continually seeing as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit."

Most of your statements have no basis in reality. "True morality cannot even be defined in an atheistic universe, much less be realistically established." How on earth did you come to that conclusion? You chose to ignore noble philosophies such as Taoism and Buddhism, both, in their purest form, declare their non belief in a deity. Also the humanistic philosophies of Western culture, practiced by highly moral individuals are based on purely secular principles.
Trouble is that, brought up marinated in a religious atmosphere produces individuals with a reflexive certainty of - no god equals no moral compass. From a rational philosophical viewpoint, this type of biased thinking has no grounding in either truth or reality.

    • @tcrown3333
      @tcrown3333 Před 5 lety +3

I would have thought, given your obvious intellect, you would know that ALL opinions are subjective; even yours. The declaration of the existence of any deity, be it Christian or a-another is an arbitrary one and is the device of humans. Man has brought about the idea of a fundamental authority (god,) for a variety of reasons and expediencies. This objective, infallible authority is the (subjective) dream of man.
You should know that the existence of a deity cannot be proven either way, yet you speak as though you possess some esoteric knowledge, hidden from others, that allows you to declare this certainty. Many before you have granted themselves this authority and for reasons far more sinister.
Given your upbringing, I accept your conversion to your faith was not what I declared it to be and for that I apologise. If a man's faith in a deity brings him/her joy, then believe away. After all, you may be right...

As we were in mozambique, we preached the Gospel as the restoration of man to the image of God for free, because of Gods love. We explained the fall of man and Gods resolution by His own atoning blood and transformation power and love of Holy Spirit.
After asking who would want to become this new creation, 75% of the villagers stood on their feet. I just said: "Father, Holy Spirit, here are your children, keep them in your truth and make them like you".
We had a general fire tunnel. All that went through it got touched by Holy Spirit, wobly on their feet. The day after we prayed for the sick. Children danced in front of us leading us to the homes where people lay sick. Some starving. All got healed.
After the 9th healing we looked at eachother and said: this is what the first church was like, all got healed.
A woman, later it turned out she was the wife of the head of the Village, was laying on a bed with red swollen legs. In pain. She could not walk. As i prayed for her wholeness, i looked away, looked at her legs again and was like: hey, those legs were red and swollen a second ago... How God does that... well He is God... and He is in us...
Another woman had severe stomage issues. After the first "be whole, be healed" prayer, nothing happened. Someone said: "i think it is a 4th generational curse!". Well, that does not change the Gospel so we prayed again. The woman felt "something" leave her stomage and was instantly well.
      Etc, etc.
After a week we stopped by on our way home. The son of the head of the Village. Leaped for joy and said that all we had prayed for had been healed and numereous people had had revelations from Holy Spirit. But, there was this one man he really wanted us to pray for. Antonio.
He laid in a chickenshed on a broken bed. Just skin and bones. It turned out that in his teenage years he had been wandering of in to the mountains, screaming and yelling for years, returned home, laid down, never moved again, never spoke again. Total muscle loss. Total contraction. Unable to move.
I crawled up to him, embraced him on his bed standing in his faeces. Loved on him, cried over him, spoke healing, completeness over him, said it was all over, that Jesus has come to make him whole again. In the mean time i said: Jesus am i doing ok? He answered: you're doing just fine.
We washed him. Dressed him up. All on his bed. Then suddenly i heard Holy Spirit say: get him on his feet! So i took his hand and said: arise! And pulled him up on his feet. Wobly but standing, he made his first steps in 15 years. The whole village went banana's praising God. We gave some last instructions and drove home.
God stooped down in Christ to give us back the divine life Adam let go of in the fall of man. What a resolve, what a God, what a love.
Be encouraged. Continue in the faith. Holy Spirit guides in to truth and transforms all of us back to original created value: Christlikeness. Walking in unselfish divine power and love.

In a youtube sense, it implies a troll. Thus, I suggest in the future, you provide some sort of insight or response before asking a question...
That said...in the context of this video, Hitchen's books, current societal issues, etc...my personal definition of religion is any belief that implies anything without scientific evidence. And for all that we don't know (i.e. what/where the universe is expanding into!?), attributing those questions to the supernatural is highly illogical.
All religions believe in some supernatural, unproven force that has defied the laws of physics, geology, biology, etc. Unfortunately, many of our species also believe the words written in certain books or scripts (i.e bible, quran) in a literal sense...or, they take the words of preachers, priests, muslim imams, scientology or mormon temple cultists,, etc as some kind of "truth".
My further concern with religion of all kind is that it is an insult to rational thinking and intelligence. Worse, some religions (especially Islam) make special claims to their followers....they say they're the One and Final religion. Needless to say, this nonsense is a danger to the world. (as Hitchens stated...over and over and over..

HItchens all but said Billy Graham is a crook and shyster making money off of religion. If Hitchens would have done some hard research instead just spouting off of the top of his head, he would have found that BG was paid a salary by his crusade foundation. Calling Billy Graham a self-conscious fool, a disgusting evil man, and nothing more than a business man who rakes in the cash and who gave phony appearances, was the height of irresponsibility and unsubstantiated horse manure by Hitchens. Hitchens didn't know Billy Graham anymore than I knew Genghis Khan. And the story of James Templeton confronting Billy Graham, and Graham asserting that it was too late to go back now, is nothing more than an outright lie. And how has BG tried to profit from his faith? He is paid a salary. He doesn't amass vulgar wealth like Benny Hinn, Bob Tilton, Creflo Dollar, Paula White, Kenneth Copeland, who are among a long list of frauds and shysters. I do agree that Scienology is a racket, but not Christianity. Are there those who profit off of Christianity? Certainly. But putting Billy Graham in that category is reckless, irresponsible, and downright dishonest. And lastly, i don't just randomly believe in Christ's birth, death, and resurrection. I believe the Bible and other historical writings. And most importantly, I've been enlightened by the Holy Spirit. Sadly, HItchens was miserable, lost fool who held on to his nonsense until he died. He was the real hypocrite. He certainly profitted on his religion: atheism. And lastly, I'd love to hear the "bigotry" articulated to Richard Nixon by Billy Graham.

I am tempted to start with suggesting it is ironic that Hitchens' childhood began with strict comprehensive bible study as part of his regular academic exercises. However, it stands to reason that in order for someone to be as effective as Hitchens was, being knowledgeable of the detail of religions was key.
Consider his incredible memory of this repository of biblical articles, and historical database of religious events, and his life experiences of seeing so many things personally. The culmination of these contributing experiences, studies, and observations produced one ultimate result: it gave him credibility.
Add to this ability to call upon any one of these pieces of evidence in mid conversation, the dry wit and sarcasm that only a Brit can deliver, and you have a debater that cuts to the heart of the issue every time.
The most common mistake that most opponents made with Hitchens is that they forget he is arguing to undermine ALL religion.

Space (independent constant variable) is the cause of time (dependent constant variable) and they cannot exist without each other. He mentioned the Canadian evangelist "James" Templeton. He was speaking of Charles Templeton, a Canadian evangelist who came out as an agnostic in 1957. He wrote several books on his turning away from belief in God, such as Farewell to God: My Reasons for Rejecting the Christian Faith. I think he is one of the reasons that evangelical Christianity has never taken off in Canada the way it did in the States.

Listening to this, I realise how much I miss Hitch, and how much we need him now in this crazy fucked up planet.
A massive intellectual, and an extremely strong voice of reason, completely unafraid of the "PC" brigade.
Don't "RIP" Hitch, as most would say !
Keep reminding us through your videos, interviews, books, publications, audio books, and most of all, through public figures who wholly recognise your contribution to a secular, fair and humanistic world.

Why would he accuse Billy Graham of being one of those liars when there was a mountain of evidence from all his friends, family, US Presidents, politicians, people who have had their lives changed, his normal salary, humble house, his good deeds. It's a ridiculous statement honestly from Mr. Hitchens.

@@Nameless-pt6oj You make some points. He WAS a friend to many a politician and was instrumental in having the term "In God We Trust" added to paper money in 1957. Is this GOOD? I think not. @@Nameless-pt6oj Mr. Hitchins was addressing Mr. Graham's, Anti Semitism, which is on record. I think Grahm thought of himself as a good man and was an actual believer in that crap, but he also believed that his decency came from christ and that the Jews killed Christ, which is a core tenant of Christianity Irrational hate,weather-based on faith politics,or bigotry, is evil.. Hitchins just pointed that out. It would be up to Grahm or his supporters, to explain and defend it.
