  • Filipino martial arts, such as Kali, Arnis, and Eskrima, are weapons-based arts that utilize techniques involving sticks, knives, and empty hands. Apolo Ladra is recognized as one of the world's top instructors in these disciplines. He emphasizes the strategy of entering against opponents and advocates a continuous offensive approach, where the responsibility for defense shifts to the opponent.

The best thing we ever did was intensive offensive training with a knife, you get to learn the good bad and ugly of the blade.
Then when it flips you already know the only angles that can cut you, mastering body mechanics knowledge for you and the opponent.
People don't realise the importance of 1. The footwork puts you in the right place and opponent ar a disadvantage 2. The short violent pulls and palm strikes give you the opportunity to "decorate it".
I know looking at the drills it looks superfluous, done at speed with violent intent it's a different game 🤐

Believe me, the practical application of this martial arts is too common in the philippines among its practitioners and the philippine military. The reason there is no proper competition of this martial arts in the mainstream like karate, taekwondo etc is because of its killer nature. Filipino martial arts is not for show or demonstration, it is mainly to kill the opponent. That's what happened to magellan when he fought the old Filipino warriors during spanish occupation hundreds years ago. Magellan was turned into a kill test .

Most of FMA/Kali strikes would be deemed illegal in MMA. This is also true to FMA empty hands (no weapon) art which mostly targets the neck, eyes, groin, and etc. which is an instant DQ in any combat sports.
While you can fashion your FMA techniques where it can be used in MMA, you'd rather go practice other arts.

The sticks are just optional. And are there only for practice.
Real fights, anything you get your hands on.
This fighting style is developed in the spanish colonial era and is so effective that Filipino's were banned to carry blades by the Spaniards. Who has armor and Guns.
Yes, as you guessed it, the stick is adapted as a stand-in for blades.
You don't need a weapon because you, the person, is the one controlling your own actions.
Matter of fact, you are a more dangerous opponent unarmed up close. Hold the wrist, you control the hand, hold the elbow, you control the arm, Punch the Armpit and the entire arm will be disabled.
A guy who doesn't know how to handle a sword is a danger to himself. A guy who does is a danger to everyone around him.
And Kali is applicable to almost any hand-held melee weaponry.
Almost every street fight and hostage situations are within your range.unless we're talking way beyond that, then that would invalidate any self defense arts, including pepper sprays. (Unless you also have an uno reverse card Gun.)

So basically, this guy is saying if you want to be an action star, learn from me. You want to survive and win a real fight, look at the other guys. What a disgrace to this art of fighting.
